Mr. Baidoo said the 30,000 oil palm seedlings constituted phase one of its Climate Resilient Oil Palm Project (CROPP), and formed part of the company’s 10-year Social Economic Development Plan (SEDP) initiated in 2022, in partnership with Solidaridad West Africa in five districts and one municipal in Adansi.

He said reclaimed galamsey sites across the district would also be taken care of in the distribution of the seedlings.

According to Mr. Baidoo, AngloGold Ashanti had invested a total of GH¢1.8 million into phase one of the project with the seedlings, valued at GH¢105.000.

The Obuasi East District Director of Agriculture, Mr. Osei Yaw, urged the various co-operative groups, which would manage the oil palm industry, to work hard to make Adansi a major oil palm-production destination in Ghana.

Nana Barima Nsu Antwi Kwaning II, Fomena Benkumhene, who represented the Adansihene, said oil palm had proved to be useful to humanity in so many ways, and urged the entire Adansiman to wholeheartedly embrace the mass production, spearheaded by AngloGold.

Speaking exclusively to The Chronicle later, Nana Edmundson Appiah, President of Obuasiman Oil Palm Growers and Marketing Society Limited, expressed his appreciation to AngloGold Ashanti for supporting mass production of oil palm in Adansi.

He pointed out that by this initiative, the company had demonstrated to Ghanaians that galamsey sites could be filled or reclaimed and planted with oil palm seedlings to make them useful.

He called on the teeming youth in Adansi not to shun the oil palm cultivation initiative, but rather embrace it.

Leader of Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele

The leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has warned the judges handling the case of the presidential election petition tribunal, PEPT, to be careful with their judgments to avoid generational destruction.

He said there would be serious consequences if the judges give a wrong judgment on the election tribunal cases.

He stated that any judge that gives a wrong pronouncement will see the wrath of God, adding that the anger of the Lord will come greatly upon them.

In a statement by his media aide, Oluwatosin Osho, the cleric warned that their generations will be affected if they deliver any judgment as a result of any form of financial influence or interest.

According to Ayodele: ‘’I still want to tell the judges that there will be consequences if they give the wrong judgment concerning the election tribunal. Any judge who makes wrong pronouncements will see the wrath of God and the anger will come upon them.

‘’The judges must make the right pronouncement so they can be blessed than do what will cause tribulation, agony, pain, and tears. They should not do what will destroy their generations.

Rohi Global Ministries urges churches to do more

0
The health screening

An Associate Pastor of Rohi Global Ministries, Gabriel Sika Baffour, says the church owes the public a responsibility to help them thrive in all aspects of life.

Speaking on behalf of the Founder and Head Pastor of the Ministry, Bishop Dr. Chris Parsram, he said the church owned it a duty to guide members of the public to have both spiritual and physical help.

He told journalists in an interview at a health screening outreach, organised by Rohi Global Ministries last Saturday, July 29, 2023, that the Church had everything to do with the development of society, and the nation as a whole.

According to him, the Church had a role to play in shaping and reforming behaviours in correspondence with the Word of God.

He said spiritual protection and physical well-being were inter-woven, therefore, the Church must spearhead the march in achieving the two.

Pastor Baffour added that while the Saturday’s health outreach at Ashaley Botwe was not the first of its kind, however, this was special, because it marked their 10th Anniversary.

The free health screening was also part of many events – health walk, musical concert, sporting games – and it would be climaxed by a Thanksgiving Service, earmarked by the Rohi Global Ministries to engage the public.

The importance of these events was to express their gratitude to God for how far He had brought them.

“Rohi is ten years old now. The journey hasn’t been that easy; it is been tough, but through it all God has been good and faithful to us,” he stated.

He was particular about the health screening, because most people felt reluctant going to the hospital to seek medical attention.

In the coming next decade, Pastor Gabriel strongly believed Rohi Global Ministries would be able to build a clinic or hospital for the community with subsidised charges.

He urged Christians to be doers of the Word of God, and avoid being hypocritical and indulging in double standard.

Similarly, Pastor Gabriel called on the political heads of the country to lead by example, adding that vice versa would lead the country to crash.

“The Church hasn’t failed. We are doing our part, but sometimes it boils down to the individual. We can preach and teach, but if you decide not to adhere to the teachings…,” he stressed.

Dr. Neta Chris Abiana Parsram added that the focus for the screening was Hepatitis B & C, hypertension, and diabetes.

She said early diagnosis and treatment of, especially diabetes, would help reduce the incident of stroke.

Dr. Neta added that Hepatitis C was not as dangerous as the B, however, there was a vaccine to serve as a preventive remedy.

She added that the medical team was able to diagnose hypertension incidents among the participants of the health screening.

The beneficiaries were urged to seek medical attention, as Hypertension was one of the leading causes of immobility and rising incident of Stroke in Ghana.

“You can have Hypertension and not get Stroke if detected early,” she added

Ghana’s Economy Expected to Recover Its Potential By 2025 -World Bank Report

0
Pierre Laporte, World Bank Country Director for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone

A combination of domestic imbalances and external shocks in 2022, led to macroeconomic challenges in Ghana. The year was marked by currency depreciation, rising inflation, and tumbling investor confidence.

Pre-existing fiscal vulnerabilities such as mounting debt burden, a rigid budget weakened by high energy sector costs and chronically low public revenues, were deepened by difficult global economic conditions notes the World Bank’s latest Economic Update.

The report titled “Price Surge: Unraveling Inflation’s Toll on Poverty and Food Security” states that Ghana faces an extremely challenging outlook, and the economic situation is likely to remain challenging before it rebounds. Economic growth is projected to slow down to 1.5% in 2023 and remain depressed in 2024 at 2.8% but the economy is expected to recover to its potential growth by 2025.

“As a result of efforts to address macroeconomic instability, corrective fiscal and monetary policies are expected to influence total demand and slow down non-extractive GDP growth”, said Pierre Laporte, World Bank Country Director for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone “High inflation, increased interest rates, and macroeconomic uncertainties will keep private consumption and investment growth below pre-pandemic levels, leading to subdued non-extractive growth in the short term; but growth will begin to recover to its potential by 2025 as drag from fiscal consolidation fades and macroeconomic stabilization and structural reforms start bearing fruit.”

The report recommends that in addition to managing the immediate macroeconomic crisis, the authorities would be well served by embarking on structural reforms to tackle its root causes, boost economic growth, and build economic resilience:

  • The report calls for Ghana to sustainably collect more domestic revenue, notably by streamlining tax incentive regimes and improving revenue administration.
  • It suggests that Ghana could implement tighter expenditure controls to improve budget execution accuracy and prevent new arrears accumulation.
  • The report states that the government needs to fully address the energy sector shortfalls, which continue to threaten fiscal sustainability, and it calls on the government to extend, expand, and thoroughly implement the Energy Sector Recovery Programme.
  • Rebuilding the financial sector’s capital buffers, will promote financial stability and development. As based on recently published audited financial statements, the DDEP has eroded banks’ capital buffers and some banks are undercapitalized or insolvent.
  • It calls on the government to boost the inflow of FDI by enhancing the investment climate through improvements in transparency, accessibility and quality of business regulation and regulatory governance.
  • On climate change adaptability, the report recommends that the government draws from recommendations of the World Bank’s recent Country Climate and Development Report (CCDR) to prioritize investments that maximize resilience benefits at an affordable cost.

“Macroeconomic shocks, particularly inflation tend to affect the poor the most. The next two years will be very tricky for Ghana’s poverty reduction efforts. Without bringing the economy back on track, no meaningful poverty reduction can happen.

Concurrently, safety nets to protect the most vulnerable need to be enhanced to ensure sustainable poverty reduction and shared prosperity,” said Kwabena Gyan Kwakye, World Bank Economist and co-author of the report.

“Expanding and increasing transfers of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) could ensure the poorest are able to cope and build resilience to future shocks.”

The report also indicates that high inflation in 2022 has had significant effects on food security and poverty in Ghana and has eroded the purchasing power of Ghanaian households, leading to a deterioration in living standards and ultimately, worsening poverty and food insecurity.

Simulations suggest that in 2022 nearly 850,000 Ghanaians were pushed into poverty due to rising prices and the loss in purchasing power.

In the longer term, to mitigate the impact of inflation on food security, policymakers must enable farmers to adjust to global demand and take advantage of market opportunities” said Ashwini Sebastian, Senior Agricultural Economist, and co-author “This is particularly relevant since many of the poor are farming households. Policies should therefore be evidence based and aimed at alleviating the different constraints farmers face.

Medium-to-long term policy actions may include the channeling of investments in agriculture research and technology transfers to help increase productivity and reduce production costs, as well as improve the quality and safety of food.

Additionally, on climate change, it is essential that the government invests in climate smart agriculture initiatives which can help farmers adapt to changing weather patterns. Promoting a sustainable agriculture, resilient to climate change, can help farmers withstand future shocks.

In addition to supporting higher domestic food production, policies need to target opening the country to more effective integration with global food supply chains.

Programs may seek to foster regional and global trade to improve the availability and affordability of food by reducing barriers to trade, promoting regional integration, and increasing market transparency.

Also, policies that seek to reduce market distortions such as subsidies, taxes, and price controls can improve market efficiency and reduce food waste.

Latif Abubakar urges creatives to build solid brands to attract corporate Ghana

0
Latif Abubakar

Latif Abubakar, the Chief executive of Globe Productions has urged Ghanaian creatives to look beyond sponsorships and focus on building brands that will attract corporate Ghana.

The celebrated playwright revealed that as part of his strategy to keep afloat in the industry, he decided to start looking beyond sponsorships and adapt the team-building model.

“So, most of my stage plays, I don’t get sponsors, but I get the auditorium full because I have built a team-building model around it, and I sell that to corporate organisations, so they buy bulk tickets for their staff to come and watch,” he said.

He made these comments at the third edition Joy FM’s Showbiz Roundtable: A Thought Leadership Forum held at Labadi Beach Hotel while discussing how to explore the dynamics of sponsorship in the creative space.

According to him, this model works largely because he factors in the corporate world when scripting his plays.

He added that, “this strategy attracts and heightens the interest of company executives in purchasing bulk tickets for their team members because they understand that his production seeks to educate and equip them with more team-building skills that will benefit them.”

Mr. Abubakar revealed that this strategy has made funding productions so much easier that he and his team can carry out a full production and fill an auditorium without involving sponsors.

He encouraged Ghanaian creatives to leave their comfort zones and come up with more innovative ways to attract businesses rather than seeking sponsorships.

This, he believes, is the best way to boost the creative arts industry in Ghana.
