Health Benefits of Soy Milk

0
Soy milk

Soy milk is a well-known dairy milk replacement, but it’s not just a substitute ingredient. Soy milk can be a worthwhile addition to your diet on its own. This healthy, flavorful beverage first came about as a waste product on the way to making tofu. Today, soy milk can be found around the country as a lactose-free dairy substitute with health benefits that are all its own.

Health Benefits

The vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants in soy milk can provide important health benefits. For example, the forms of vitamin B found in soy milk are important for helping your body maintain your nerve cells and DNA. They can also help you avoid certain forms of anemia, which can prevent tiredness and fatigue.

Soy milk is also high in protein. The protein in soy milk is healthy, plant-based, and can help support healthy muscles and organs.

In addition, soy milks can provide other health benefits like:

Brain Health

Soy milk is rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which are “healthy” fats that your body cannot form on its own. Omega-3 fatty acids are linked to a reduced risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Soy milk is still being studied for its effect on these diseases, but soy in general is one of the best non-animal sources of omega-3 fatty acids.

Improved Heart Health

Soy milk can also help support your cardiovascular system. Soy milk is an excellent source of potassium, whether or not it has been fortified. Potassium is deeply connected to maintaining lower blood pressure and a regular pulse. Furthermore, soy milk has been linked to lower cholesterol levels, especially in people who have high cholesterol.

Reduced Symptoms of Menopause

Soy milk contains isoflavones, which are a class of chemical known as “phytoestrogens.” These isoflavones react in the body like a weak form of estrogen. Because of that, studies have shown that consuming soy milk and other soy products might help reduce the symptoms of menopause, such as hot flashes.

Nutrition

Most soy milk found in supermarkets and health food stores is fortified with added nutrients. This makes fortified soy milk a great source of calcium, which is the most common mineral in your body. Consuming enough calcium can help strengthen your bones and reduce your risk of osteoporosis.

Things to Watch Out For

While isoflavones can help reduce symptoms of menopause, they may also have negative effects. More research is needed, but some studies point towards isoflavones being linked to reduced thyroid function.

These isoflavones may affect how your body produces thyroid hormones. However, these studies are still inconclusive and need further support. As long as you consume enough iodine in your daily diet, there are no signs that drinking soy milk will significantly affect your thyroid function.

Anyone with an allergy to soy products should avoid drinking soy milk. Soy milk used in recipes can also trigger allergic reactions, so it’s best to avoid soy milk entirely if a member of your household has soy allergies.

How to add Soy Milk to Your Diet

Soy milk can be found in grocery stores, health food stores, and restaurants around the country. You can also make soy milk at home.

Soak ten ounces of soybeans in water overnight. Then boil these beans in twelve cups of water for ten minutes. Blend the water and soybeans together until smooth, then simmer for another forty minutes. If you like, you can add a pinch of salt or sugar to taste. When you finish simmering the soybeans, strain the mixture through cheesecloth to remove solids. You can store the soymilk for up to a week — about as long as dairy milk lasts.

Here are some ways you can include soy milk in your diet:

Add soy milk to a smoothie

Use soy milk in your coffee

Eat cereal with soy milk

Use soy milk in baked goods

Make a bechamel sauce with soy milk

Use soy milk in curry

European Leagues Kick-off This Weekend; Preview, Predictions, Surprise packages & more

0
Premier League

Europe’s top leagues begin to get under way across the continent this weekend. Can Arsenal knock City off the top? Who will reign in Spain? Will anyone knock Bayern off their perch? Can Napoli retain the Scudetto? Which wonderkid should you look out for?

PREMIER LEAGUE

The new Premier League season gets underway this Friday as defending champions and Treble winners Manchester City make the trip to newly-promoted Burnley. The only way I see Man City not winning the league is if they take their foot off the pedal after winning the treble. The thing is I just don’t see Pep Guardiola letting that happen.

City won’t have it all their own way but I do think they edge it again. Arsenal will be stronger after last season too. Mikel Arteta will have learned lessons from watching his side fall away and they have added greater strength in depth in Declan Rice and Kai Havertz.

I fancy Liverpool to make it but they need to find replacement for Jordan Henderson and Fabinho in midfield. Alexis Mac Allister is a terrific signing and gives them something different while Curtis Jones is emerging into an integral part of the team.

United have done good business in Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund and the arrival of a ball-playing goalkeeper in Andre Onana will change the way they play and control games, especially away from home.

Newcastle might just miss out because of the extra Champions League fixtures. Chelsea will need a bit of time under Mauricio Pochettino to settle into the way he wants to play. Tottenham have improved their attack with James Maddison but still don’t have the defenders they need to be solid at the back and that will cost them – again.

Relegation – Sheffield United, Luton, Bournemouth: Luton is an incredible story and they have done brilliantly to get to the Premier League but they will go straight back down. With the investment Premier League clubs are making and the quality they are bringing in, it’s going to be so hard for them.

It’s going to be tight for the final spot between Forest, Burnley, Bournemouth and Everton. I know the new Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola is highly-regarded but he’s going to have to cut his teeth on the job with no previous Premier League experience. Although they have made some good signings, especially Justin Kluivert, I think the experience of Steve Cooper and Sean Dyche, as well as Vincent Kompany’s knowledge of the league, will give them the edge.

LA LIGA – SPAIN

Xavi’s Barcelona are the reigning champions but will again face competition for the title from Real Madrid, who have strengthened with the signing of Jude Bellingham and teenage sensation Arda Guler but sold captain Karim Benzema to Al-Ittihad and lost Marco Asensio to Paris St-Germain.

Atletico Madrid and Real Sociedad will join Barca and Real in the Champions League group stages.

La Liga Spain

Real Valladolid, Espanyol and Elche were relegated to the Segunda Division, with Granada, Las Palmas and Alaves taking their place in the top tier of Spanish football.

Barcelona will spend the season away from the Nou Camp as it undergoes renovation, moving to the Montjuic stadium in the city.

Prediction: Neither Real Madrid nor Barcelona look dramatically better or worse. Barcelona will have more problems with a drop in hunger, a move to Montjuic and increased focus on Europe.

Surprise Package: Getafe. Given Girona, Rayo and Osasuna can no longer be counted as surprises, Getafe will come bounding back to mid-table and perhaps even the European race under the expert tutelage of Jose Bordalas. Slightly risky given goalscorer Enes Unal is out until January, but Getafe underperformed last season, and Bordalas almost always overperforms.

SERIE A – ITALY

After winning their first Scudetto in more than 30 years, Napoli face a tough task in retaining their title under new manager Rudi Garcia, while Juventus, who finished seventh, will be wanting to make up for ground lost last season after being docked points over the club’s transfer dealings.

Lazio, Inter Milan and AC Milan join Napoli in the Champions League group stages, while Claudio Ranieri’s Cagliari, Frosinone and Genoa are the sides with a point to prove after earning promotion from Serie B.

Inter, with star forward Lautaro Martinez joined by new recruit Marcus Thuram, should have plenty of goals in them.

Prediction: Inter. Last season’s Champions League finalists should have challenged for the title last season and will surely start this new campaign as favourites again. Having reinforced their midfield even further, they boast strength in the middle and in defence and possess one of the finest strikers in the league.

The attack is yet to be completed considering the departure of both Edin Dzeko and Romelu Lukaku but Simone Inzaghi has shown that he is adept at creating teams that can play in a multitude of ways to secure victories. With Napoli bringing in a new coach and Milan signing so many new players, it is Inter who boast stability and the chance to continue this project that should lead them to another title.

Top scorer: Victor Osimhen. In a year when everyone is desperate to buy the perfect and complete striker, Napoli can boast one of the very best number nines in the world. Fresh from lifting the Scudetto with Napoli, the club can count themselves lucky to have kept the player within the ranks.

Serie A – Italy

Smart, technically gifted, strong and with a mentality that belongs to the elite, Osimhen was top scorer last season and is the favourite to score an endless amount of goals again this term.

Surprise Package: Atalanta. Having sold Rasmus Hojlund to Manchester United for a hefty profit, Atalanta have reinvested that money to bring in both Gianluca Scamacca and Charles De Ketelaere, two players who have yet to demonstrate their full potential. However, under Gian Piero Gasperini, a coach renowned for teaching football and developing great talent, Atalanta could be the team to watch this season.

Player to watch: Samuel Chukwueze. Milan have had a busy summer on the transfer market. They may have sold fan favourite Sandro Tonali but they have reinforced the squad especially in the attacking areas. With lots of names to look out for from Christian Pulisic to Yunus Musah, it is Chukwueze who could well make the difference.

For some time, Milan have had a lopsided attack, dependent on the attacking potential of Rafael Leao on the left. With Chukwueze set to play on the right, Milan will boast balance and two explosive and dynamic players on either wing.

Chukwueze is unpredictable, electric and capable of providing for the team on and off the ball.

Domestic debt restructuring took away our GH¢53.1b -BoG

0
The Governor of Bank of Ghana, Dr Ernest Addison

The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has disclosed that GH¢53.1 billion out of the GH¢60 billion losses reported in the 2022 financial statement was as a result of the government’s domestic debt restructuring exercise (phases 1 and II).

In a statement issued today, the BoG said, “The financial statements reported a total loss of GH¢60 billion, which has since become a matter of unfortunate politicisation. It is noteworthy that GH¢53.1 billion of those losses was a direct result of the Government’s domestic debt restructuring exercise (phases 1 and II)”.

The statement added that it is important to put the Bank of Ghana’s 2022 financial results in proper context with a clear statement of the problem that Ghana faced and the chronology of events in Ghana since 2019.

Also, it indicated that there was a clear mismatch between revenue inflows and expenditure financed in 2020 by exceptional support from the IMF and World Bank resources, in addition to financing from the Bank of Ghana through the issuance of the GH¢10 billion COVID-19 bond.

It is as a result of this that the sovereign spreads on Ghana bonds widened, signaling investor dissatisfaction with the stance of fiscal policy.

The institution further disclosed that the Budget for 2022, which was read in 2021, failed to address fiscal concerns as the Budget was even more expansionary by about 23% with a raft of revenue measures to raise financing.

It is for this reason that the Credit Rating Agencies further downgraded Ghana’s sovereign debt rating, which blocked Ghana’s access to international capital market borrowing.

“This triggered a liquidity crisis, spilling over into a balance of payments crisis. External and domestic payments needed to be made, the domestic auction was failing, and the Bank of Ghana had to step in to arrest a major economic and social crisis.

“In two months, the Bank of Ghana lost US$500 million in reserves and built a significant overdraft with the government as a result of the auction failures. It became clear that Ghana was on a path that was unsustainable, and the Government had to approach the IMF for support in July 2022”, the statement read.

In this regard, the Bank of Ghana has assured key stakeholders and the general public that it is committed to the highest standards of prudent management, governance, and transparent accounting and audit practices.

Tax on betting recipe for chaos -Concerned Bettors of Ghana

0

A group calling itself Concerned Bettors of Ghana has rejected the 10% tax imposition on all betting, lottery, and gaming wins.

According to a statement issued by the group, an attempt to levy the youth who are into betting “is a recipe for chaos.”

Richard Aguda, the Convener of the group, described the tax in the statement as clueless,” arguing that because of the lack of jobs, betting had become a source of livelihood for the youth.

10% withholding tax on lotto & gaming winnings wins starts August 15

OPPOSITION TO THE IMPLEMENTATION OF 10% TAX ON BETTING, GAMES AND LOTTERY WINS ON 15TH AUGUST, 2023.

We, the above mentioned association, rejects the announcement by the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) to the public for the implementation 10% tax on all betting, games and lottery wins, from Tuesday, 15* August, 2023.

CBOG wishes to say that an attempt to go ahead to levy the ordinary Ghanaian, especially the youth in betting, in an already tax-burdened society is a recipe for chaos.

Betting, games and lottery has become an avenue for livelihood for millions of Ghanaian youth due to unavailability of existing jobs and taking 10% of its winnings is a scandalous means to push the youth into a more abject poverty.

The association in its press release in April this year on the rejection of 10% tax was of the hope that government would have listened to the plea of the teaming youth in betting, but was as usual, ignored.

Taxing the very source of survival for many Ghanaians in this current economic hardship is clueless and must be rejected.

Mrs. Appiah was further told by the Prosecuting Officer, DSP Emmanuel Nyamekye that two cars valued at GH¢600,000.00 had also been retrieved. This brings the total expenditure of the house helps to over GH¢3.4 million.

DSP Nyamekye said the properties were retrieved from Patience Botwe, Sarah Agyei and a newly added accused, Yahaya Sumaila.

Previously, the police prosecution presented five accused persons namely – Patience, Sarah, Benjamin Sowa, Kweku Botwe and Malik Dauda.

In the latest amended charge sheet and brief facts, eight people were put before the court, with the exclusion of Kweku Botwe, Patience’s father.

They are Patience (A1), Sarah (A2), Benjamin (A3), Malik (A4), Christiana Achab (A5), Job Pomary (A6), Yahaya Sumaila (A7) and Franlin Sarakpo (A8) who is at large.

DSP Nyamekye prayed the court not to take the plea of the accused persons because the case is still under investigation and the police are hunting for other suspects connected to the case.

He said the extension of time would afford the police time to conduct a meticulous investigation on the instant matter and also that the case will be taking over by the Attorney-General.

Eleven charges had been preferred against the accused persons, they are conspiracy to commit a crime, stealing and dishonestly receiving.

Patience (hairdresser) and Sarah (unemployed) are facing one count of conspiracy to commit a crime, six counts of stealing US$800,000.00 and US$200,000.00 and €300,000.00 – all properties of the former minister.

Afriyie Akoto wins hearts of W/North delegates

0
Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto

Delegates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Western North Region of Ghana have pledged to reward Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto for making a positive impact in their lives.

According to the delegates, the impact of the government’s flagship project, planting for Food and Jobs (Pf&J) as well as smallholder farmers in the region, was so incredible that poverty levels in the region have drastically reduced.

Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto spearheaded the implementation of the Planting for Food and Jobs project.

They are also of the view that Dr. Akoto’s contribution to the party in the region is unmatched. Therefore, it was proper to appreciate him with their votes when the party goes to the polls (Super Delegates Conference) on August 26, 2023 to elect five candidates for the December showdown.

The delegates made the pledge when they paid a courtesy call on Dr. Akoto at his Kumasi residence last Saturday.

The delegates were made up of Polling Station Executives, Electoral Area Coordinators, Constituency Executives and Regional Executives drawn from Aowin, Suaman, Bibiani-Anhwiaso Bekwai, Sefwi Wiaso, Sefwi Akontombra, Juaboso, Bodi, Bia West and Bia East constituencies.

A former Deputy Western Regional Organiser of the NPP, Juliana Aidoo (a.k. Obaa Akua) said in an interview that “their affection for Dr. Akoto needs no introduction.

“Dr. Akoto has been with us for so many years. His ties with the party in Western North Region even deepened when he became the Minister of Food and Agriculture. He has been so supportive to the party. Under his watch as Minister for Food and Agriculture, he transformed so many lives.

“Where we have gotten to as a party and a country, we need a practically oriented person to turn things around. Dr Akoto has demonstrated that, which is why all of us have endorsed him and pledged to work tirelessly to get more delegates to vote for him,” she noted.

She added: “Let no one cross his path. Dr. Afriyie Akoto is the only candidate who perfectly understands the structures of the party and can change things around for the betterment of all”.

Having experienced the impactful hands of Dr. Akoto, the delegates, according to Obaa Akua, are convinced that he is the only candidate who practically possesses the means to turn around the fortunes of the UP tradition and the Ghanaian economy.

She urged all to rally around Dr. Afriyie Akoto to save the NPP and the Ghanaian economy.

NDC galled over loss of GH¢60bn @ BoG

0
Cassiel Ato Baah Forson

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Ernest Addison, and his lieutenants, to vacate their positions after they allegedly supervised the loss of GH¢60.8 billion.

The NDC posited that a staggering loss of GH¢60.8 billion recorded by the Bank of Ghana was equivalent to $6 billion, which is twice the amount Ghana is seeking from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) in its recent bailout.

According to the NDC, Dr. Addison and officials in government have not just been clueless, but unresponsive, insensitive and reckless in all their dealings, which have worsened the plights of Ghanaians.

Dr. Ernest Addison, Governor, Bank of Ghana

At a press briefing to give their verdict on the activities of BoG, the Minority Leader, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, asserted that the recklessness of Dr. Addison and his collaborators had unleashed economic hardship on Ghanaians.

He continued that the Governor and his deputies have perpetrated the highest form of impunity against the suffering masses, which could no longer be tolerated because it would set a dangerous precedent

In his view, “Those who have by their reckless and criminal conduct unleashed economic hardship and financial distress on the suffering people of Ghana must be held to account”.

Call for the Governor to resign

Dr. Ato Forson emphatically mentioned that the Central Bank of the state has been terribly desecrated by the Governor, his deputies and government officials to a point that the bank has become bankrupt.

The minority leader, therefore, called for the resignation of the Governor of the Central Bank within 21 days, counting from yesterday when the press briefing was held or face their wrath.

He said “We are resolved to embark on popular action to ‘occupy’ the Central Bank and drive out the team of inept, callous and criminal [bad] managers of the finances of this country and save the Bank of Ghana”.

The march, which he indicated would ensure accountability, would begin in 21 days if the Governor of the Bank of Ghana fails to do what he termed as the needful by packing bag and baggage out of that sacred institution.

Breakdown of alleged recklessness

Relying on Annual Report and Financial Statement of the Bank of Ghana, which was released last week, Dr. Forson mentioned that BoG has also recorded a negative equity of over GH¢55.1 billion.

This, he said, meant that the prestigious BoG, which is the mother of all banks in the country, has become bankrupt caused by the governor, with the complicity of the government’s economic management team.

The 2022 Report revealed that the Bank of Ghana spent a whopping GH¢131.6 million on motor vehicle maintenance and running in 2022 alone.

Additionally, foreign and domestic travels of the Bank of Ghana cost Ghanaian tax payers a staggering GH¢97.4 million, which is about 246% increase over the previous year.

Dr. Forson asserted that: “The Bank of Ghana also dissipated another GH¢8.6 million on Director’s remuneration alone. This represents about 87% increase over the previous year’s expenditure”.

According to the official report released by the BoG, a colossal amount of GH₵357.9 million was spent on Banking Supervision Expenses, whilst other undisclosed expenses amounted to GH¢287.8 million.

Based on the revelations above, as indicated by the BoG’s annual report, Dr. Forson emphasised that Ghanaians were charged a “Mismanagement Fee” by those in the helm of affairs at the BoG.

The report, Dr Ato Forson explained, vindicated the NDC’s consistent calls on Ghanaians that the government has completely mismanaged the economy and virtually collapsed the BoG.

“The NDC party is on record to have informed Ghanaians on countless occasions that the Bank of Ghana has been on a dangerous trajectory and indeed, it has now become a crime scene with dire consequences for all of us.

“We in the NDC will continue to explore ways of rescuing this country to prevent it from the doom that has befallen several West African countries,” he said.

NDC sacks Kumawu women’s organiser for supporting Alan

0
Madam Akua Afriyie

Madam Akua Afriyie, a Women’s Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Kumawu has been sacked for declaring her support for Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, a flagbearer aspirant of the New Patriotic Party(NPP).

She has indicated her admiration for the NPP presidential hopeful, even though she is a member of the opposition National Democratic Congress.

According to her, her sack came shortly after the video of her declaration of support for Alan went viral, during the Kumawu by-election recently.

She had told the whole world that though she is an NDC member, if the NPP presented Alan as their flagbearer in the 2024 elections, she will gladly vote for him. She stated then that Alan had a vision that could save this country and give the teeming youth hope.

She has since become the talk of town in political circles, for which the NDC did not take kindly to her pronouncement.

Akua Afriyie says she is now a floating voter, having been served with a dismissal letter. “I am currently not a member of the NDC or a member of the NPP, but l am a strong supporter of Mr. Kyerematen”.

She has cautioned that if the NPP denies Mr. Kyerematen the opportunity to lead the party, she will simply stay clear of the 2024 elections.

Akua Afriyie is amongst the huge number of voters in the NDC whose love for Mr. Kyerematen is beyond partisan politics and makes the case of the NPP winning election 2024 with Alan a reality.

Meanwhile, the constituency delegates Durbar for Kumawu, Afram Plains and Effiduase Asokore constituencies was massively attended, with delegates vowing that it will not happen again that Alan will not win.

The delegates assured in unison that discerning Ghanaians are now fully awake from their slumber and would not allow themselves to be taken unawares.

They contend that it is Alan’s time to lead the party and nothing should standing his way this time round.

10% withholding tax on lottery & betting wins starts August 15

0
TAX

In an effort to widen the Ghana tax net and rake in more revenue for development, the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) would from August 15, 2023 begin the implementation of a 10% withholding tax on all gross gaming winnings.

This means that the GRA has abandoned the previous 15% Value Added Tax (VAT) rate on each stake for a tax regime on betting, gaming, lotto and other games of chance that target only wins.

Edward Gyamerah, Commissioner for Domestic Tax Revenue Division at the GRA stated during a media engagement in Accra on Monday, this week, that the new policy falls in line with an amendment (No.2) to the Income Tax Act 2023 (Act 1094).

He said the new policy would be applied to private lotto operators, sports betting operators, casino operators, route operators, remote interactive games operators, remote interactive games operators, operators of marketing promotions and operators of other games of games.

Mr Gyamerah told the media in Accra on Monday, August 7, 2023 that the Authority by the policy expects lottery winners to start appropriate taxpaying of 10% by August 15 and “to this, we expect each and everyone to comply,” and failure to comply would have defaulting operator’s license withdrawn.

“From August 15, we expect that when you are making the payments, you will withhold 10 percent to the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA). As you have been appointed as withholding agents, the obligation is on you to withhold”, he said.

The GRA also talked about the amendment to the Excise Duty Act, which would enforce excise stamps to be affixed on textile and fruit juice packages.

He explained that the  excise stamps for textiles has a long term goal of saving the country’s dying garment industry, due to influx of pirated designs of local textiles on the market.

Mr Gyamerah added that imported and locally textiles as well as those in transition would have their unique features to differentiate between them.

On the fruit juice, he said most industries are diverting into the production of juice to avoid taxes, meanwhile, some the juices content is meanly sugar and water.

This, he said has led to the increase of sugar consumption, hence taxes might put some checks in place to slow down how businesses are finding production of fruit juice a safe haven and prevent sugar diseases among the public.

He explained that taxes are not necessary to generate revenues but also prevent certain social behaviours.

Unveiling the lifesaving power of helmets

0
Opinion

En route to the house, I witnessed a rider who suddenly lost control on the motorcycle and was thrown off. Thankfully, his helmet took the brunt of the impact, sacrificing itself to protect his head. The helmet’s shield was broken resulting in some pieces of glass scattered on the ground. I got so scared for him and asked myself, what if he wasn’t wearing a helmet?

This incident made me constantly looking out for motorbike riders who had their helmets on or even the passengers they picked. From my observation two out of 10 riders had their helmets on, with one out 10 wearing them together with their passenger, whilst seven out of 10 people had no helmet on together with their passengers.

Research by the Johns Hopkins Internal Injury Research Unit found out that as low as 33 percent of motorcycle riders used helmets. This came up during the Bloomberg Safety workshop in Kumasi.

According to a United Nations (UN) study, 34 million people died from motorcycle crashes globally between 2008 and 2020, of which 1. 4 million lives could have been saved with proper use of helmets.

A certified quality helmet can reduce the risk of death by 42% and injuries by 69%. A research from Reuters found out that people wearing helmets reduced their risk of severe traumatic brain injury by 52% and their risk of death by 44%.

In Ghana, from the 2022 data by the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA), 41% of the 2,373 deaths through road fatalities involved motorcycles, although motorcycle crashes reduced by 12.35% from 3,157 in 2021, the statistics revealed a rather worrying trend with motorcyclists which are more exposed to road traffic.

The Ghana police, in a video, illustrated the importance of wearing helmets where they used a watermelon to explain the severity of injuries from not wearing a helmet, how it was crushed badly, and how it didn’t suffer major crushes while being in a helmet. Several education have been made by major institutions like the National Road Safety Commission, Road Safety Management, and Motor Transport and Traffic Management, but Ghanaian motorcyclists are adamant.

The most shocking comes with the riders who have helmets on, but their passengers don’t. This brings us to the question as to why some riders are adamant in wearing their helmets.

Speaking to some riders and passengers in Odorkor, they expressed their thoughts on this topic. According to Abdul, he had only one helmet, and when asked if he didn’t care about the life of his passenger, he answered that they do not like wearing it.

A passenger complained about the discomfort that comes with wearing the helmet. Mr. Tawiah shared with me his experience with an accident that caused him to lose his teeth. He said that if he was wearing a helmet that day, the severity would not have been the same.

According to passenger two, she would wear it if the rider had a spare, if not she would still take the ride and pray she is not faced with any accident. She added that most of the riders were good and it was safe with them.

Mr. Saleem also stated that he and his mates knew the important of the helmets, because some of the police personnel instruct them to put it on, but they sometimes wear it to get by the police and in some cases to avoid being fined on the spot. He even compared it to how drivers wear their seatbelts only to get by the police and remove it once they were out of sight.

Through these conversations with the riders and some passengers I realised they knew the severity of not wearing the helmets, but they were just nonchalant and mostly get tired of putting it on despite the danger of not doing so.

According to health experts, helmets are essential in preventing traumatic brain injuries. It reduces the amount of force applied to the brain and protect against severe cuts, skull fractures and broken facial bones. Riding a motorcycle or bicycle is just one activity that puts users at risk of brain injury.

Helmets are 37 percent effective in preventing motorcycles deaths, and 67 percent in preventing brain injuries caused by accidents. The efficacy of helmets significantly reduces the severity of injuries sustained from head trauma.

The helmet has a hard plastic shell on the outside and foam on the inside.  If one hits their head, the materials in the helmet will help reduce the force and energy of the impact, which reduces the energy applied on the skull. The foam works to cushion the blow to the head, while the smooth, plastic outer allows your head to safely skid across the surface of impact without jerking your neck. Ghanaians should not prioritise comfort or apathy over life.
