Efya and mother Nana Adwoa Awindor

Nana Adwoa Awindor, a television host and the Development Queenmother of Afigya-Kwabre district in the Ashanti Region has said her daughter lost out on a huge project due to false speculations.

According to her, she always encourages her daughter to ignore the negativity but stay focused since such news eventually dies off.

I know my daughter, I tell her not to take it in but pray about it, it will die off. The stories break her because these are instances where you are working on something to push her and these things come up.

“This is why I was saying that we need to be careful of the way we do things and say things because you never know the effects.

“There was an instance we were working on a huge project and such news broke out. If you are an investor and you want to invest in a person and you hear such things, whether it is true or not, before you say jack, you may have taken a step back to check it,” she said on Joy Prime.

She stated that she has no regrets about supporting her daughter to be a musician despite the negativity that keeps clouding her shine.

She, however, expressed optimism about Efya’s great future and the negativity as “propellers” to push her to greater heights.

“As a mother, I feel bad about it but I know God has a better place for her. Maybe, these are propellers because the news affects us but like I said earlier, the better part of us is yet to come and not what is gone. I don’t believe in that,” Mrs. Awindor added.

She, however, pledged her support as a mother even if Efya decides to venture into something else.

Thousands ordered to flee wildfires advancing on one of the largest cities in Canada’s far north crammed into a local airport on Thursday to board emergency evacuation flights, as convoys snaked south to safety on the only open highway.

The order late Wednesday to evacuate Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories marked the latest chapter of a terrible summer for wildfires in Canada, with tens of thousands of people forced to leave their homes and vast swathes of land scorched.

Tiffany Champagne was one of many awaiting flights at the airport in Yellowknife.

As of early Thursday, more than 1,000 wildfires were burning, including about 230 in the Northwest Territories.

More than 20,000 residents of Yellowknife, the regional capital, have been given until noon Friday to leave by road or on commercial and military flights.

Sweden raises ‘terror’ threat amidst Quran burnings

Fanatics in Pakistan burn a Swedish flag to denounce Quran burnings

Sweden’s security service, SAPO, has raised its assessment of the level of threat against Sweden to 4 on a scale of 5 amid mounting international tension over the burning of copies of the Quran at demonstrations in the Nordic country.

“The threat against Sweden has gradually changed and the threat of attacks from actors within violent Islamism has increased during the year,” the security service said in a statement.

SAPO said Sweden had gone from being regarded as a legitimate target for “terrorist” attacks to being regarded as a priority target.

In the past few months, Sweden and Denmark have faced a backlash from Muslim countries after a string of anti-Islam activists burned copies of the Quran, the Muslim holy book.

Under free speech laws, Quran burnings are permitted in Sweden, but the act is considered sinful by the Muslim world.

While Denmark and Sweden have condemned the burnings and are considering new legislation to stop them from happening, domestic critics have said it would undermine their laws on protected freedoms.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said religious texts should not be burned.

World’s longest rail tunnel shut for months after freight crash

Gotthard Base rail tunnel

The world’s longest rail tunnel has been shut to passenger services after a derailment in Switzerland caused damage that will take months to repair.

Swiss authorities said there was “no indication” when the Gotthard Base Tunnel would reopen.

Sixteen wagons derailed and are still stuck inside, a week after the incident on 10 August.

Opened in 2016, the Gotthard rail link took 20 years to build and cost more than $12bn (£8.2bn).

National Swiss rail operator SBB chief executive Vincent Ducrot said on Wednesday that Gotthard was one of the safest tunnels in the world.

An investigation is being led by the Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board (STSB) and the public prosecutor’s office of the Canton of Ticino.

SBB said that in total, around 8km (4.9 miles) of track and 20,000 concrete sleepers needed to be replaced.

The rail operator added that one side of the tunnel was unaffected and should be operating “in principle” for freight usage from 23 August, but passenger trains would not be able to use the unaffected side due to safety reasons.

Judge Tanya Chutkan

A Texas woman has been charged with threatening to kill a judge who is overseeing a criminal case against former US President Donald Trump. Abigail Jo Shry, 43, allegedly phoned the court in Washington DC on 5 August and used a racial slur in her message for US District Judge Tanya Chutkan.

Ms Shry also allegedly threatened to kill a Democratic member of Congress. She admitted making the call after investigators traced her phone number, according to a court document.

In the call, Ms Shry allegedly told the judge, who is overseeing an election conspiracy case against Mr Trump: “You are in our sights, we want to kill you.”

Prosecutors say Ms Shry added: “If Trump doesn’t get elected in 2024, we are coming to kill you.” The caller also threatened all Democrats in Washington DC and the LGBT community, according to the court filing.

She allegedly also threatened to kill Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a black Texas Democrat who is running for mayor of Houston.

When federal agents visited Ms Shry’s home in the Houston suburb of Alvin three days later she said she had harboured no intention of going to Washington DC to carry out her threats.

God’s Great Love For Us

0
Dr. Joyce Rosalind Aryee, Executive Director, Salt and Light Ministries

Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for His compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness – Lamentations 3:22-23

INTRODUCTION

Psalm 103 expresses thanksgiving and praise to the Lord for the benefits and blessings He gives those who accept His commands and promises and who maintained a faithful relationship with Him. David’s praise focused on the good things God was doing for him. It is easy to complain about life, but David’s list gives us plenty for which to praise God: He forgives our sins, heals our diseases, redeems us from death, crowns us with love and compassion, satisfies our desires, and gives righteousness and justice. We receive all of these without deserving any of them.

We must never forget God’s goodness to us or fail to thank Him for the blessings He generously gives us through the Holy Spirit.

LIFE LESSONS

  1. Psalm 103:1 – Praise the Lord, my soul; all my inmost being, praise His holy name.In these opening verses, the psalmist begins by expressing his heartfelt praise and gratitude to the Lord. He urges his soul to remember and acknowledge the numerous blessings and benefits that God provides, including forgiveness, healing, redemption, and abundant goodness.God wants every part of us – body, soul and spirit – to grow close to Him and to enter into a joyful relationship with Him. He seeks worshipers who will gladly give everything they are to Him.
  2. Psalm 103:13 – As a Father has compassion on His children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear Him. How does a father have compassion on His children? He considers their weaknesses, immaturity and ignorance, and so does not require of them more than they can handle. He also teaches them with patience and mercy. Our Father does the same with us.
  3. Psalm 103:19 – The LORD has established His throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over all.The Lord is omniscient (knows all things), omnipotent (all-powerful), omnipresent (with you) and He loves us perfectly that He can and will arrange every circle of our lives to work out for our good.
  4. Psalm 103:20 – Praise the LORD, you His angels, you mighty ones who do His bidding, who obey His word. The angels of God are not the cute, harmless little cherubs often pictured in popular culture. They are messengers of enormous power, sent to do God’s will. The Lord in His mercy sends them to help us.

Psalm 103 outlines several benefits and blessings that are attributed to God and can be obtained through a relationship with Him. These benefits are highlighted in various verses of the psalm:

  1. Forgiveness of Iniquities (Psalm 103:3): The psalmist acknowledges that God forgives all our iniquities, offering a fresh start and cleansing from our sins.
  2. Healing (Psalm 103:3): The psalmist mentions that God heals all our diseases, suggesting a connection between faith and physical well-being.
  3. Redemption from Destruction (Psalm 103:4): God is described as a redeemer who saves us from destruction, implying protection and deliverance from harm.
  4. Crowning with Lovingkindness and Mercy (Psalm 103:4): The imagery of being crowned with lovingkindness and mercy portrays God’s grace and compassion enveloping us.
  5. Satisfaction with Good Things (Psalm 103:5): God satisfies us with good things, which can be interpreted as a promise of provision and blessings in life.
  6. Removal of Transgressions (Psalm 103:12): The psalmist uses the metaphor of God removing our transgressions as far as the east is from the west, indicating complete forgiveness and separation from our sins.
  7. God’s Mercy and Graciousness (Psalm 103:8): God’s merciful and gracious nature is emphasized, revealing His willingness to show compassion rather than harsh judgment.
  8. Slow to Anger (Psalm 103:8): God’s patience and slowness to anger are highlighted, portraying His willingness to give people time for repentance and change.
  9. Eternal Mercy and Righteousness (Psalm 103:17-18): God’s mercy and righteousness are described as lasting from generation to generation, indicating a consistent and enduring source of grace.
  10. Heavenly Authority and Sovereignty (Psalm 103:19): The psalm acknowledges God’s rule over the heavens and the earth, underscoring His supreme authority and control.
  11. Angelic Obedience (Psalm 103:20): The psalmist acknowledges the angels’ role in heeding God’s word and doing His will, suggesting divine protection and guidance.
  12. Covenant Faithfulness (Psalm 103:18): God’s benefits are promised to those who keep His covenant and remember His commandments, implying a reciprocal relationship of trust and obedience.

Conclusion

Overall, Psalm 103 is a profound expression of praise, gratitude, and awe toward God’s character, attributes, and deeds. It emphasizes God’s mercy, forgiveness, and love, while also acknowledging His sovereignty and eternal nature. This psalm has been cherished by believers as a source of comfort, inspiration, and spiritual reflection.

Agro-Input Suppliers Desperate for Government Intervention

Given the increased cost of everyday food items on the market recently, some apprehension has been expressed for Ghana’s food security. One of those to register such a concern is CropLife Ghana, the local wing for the international organisation promoting plant science and sustainable agriculture.

According to this group, the high cost of agricultural produce on the market can be tied to several economic factors, including the increased cost of agro-inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides used by farmers.

Importers and Suppliers of these agro-inputs who make up the membership of CropLife Ghana have attributed the increased cost of their products to higher duties and taxes payable at the various ports of entry, of which they are crying out for government’s swift intervention.

According to these suppliers, since the beginning of the year 2023, they have had to pay full taxes for products that hitherto they would enjoy some exemptions on. Eight (8) months into the year, they said not much has changed, following several attempts to get government to grant tax exemptions on agro-inputs.

These sentiments were re-echoed on the latest edition of the Eye on Port program on Accra-based Metro TV.

The Program Manager for CropLife Ghana, Kadiri Rashad lamented that industry found it confounding that agro-inputs were excluded from the tax exemptions act of 2022 considering the role agriculture plays in the national economy.

He said in the aftermath of the passing of the law, the Ministry of Finance reserve the prerogative to grant industry-specific tax exemptions to justified applicants. According to CropLife Ghana, applications have been sent in, but the Ministry is yet to heed to their requests.

“The Ministry of Finance can grant exemptions to the Ministry of Agric if put into writing. So we push through the Ministry of Agric to write to the Ministry of Finance to grant those tax exemptions but till date none of our companies have been able to enjoy these exemptions.

The letter was written to the Ministry of Finance around 10th January and up till now, they haven’t granted us these exemptions.”

He lamented that, the long wait has led to goods accruing rising demurrage fees at the ports, exacerbating their current predicament.

Mr. Rashad said the overwhelming increase in clearance cost has affected price of products on the market leading him to believe that the longer this continues, “it will have a dire impact on food security in the country.”

He said following meetings earlier this year with the Minister of Agric and the Parliamentary Select Committee on Food and Agriculture assurances were given yet not a single exemption has been granted all year.

In fact, Mr. Rashad said, “we were told that when the exemptions law was passed, it was purely an oversight.”

While the Program Manager of CropLife Ghana appreciates government’s effort to restructure the exemptions act to raise revenue, he said it is absolutely necessary for government to categorically include agro-inputs in the exempted products.

“Agriculture is sensitive, and just like health and education, this sector should not be compromised,” he pleaded.

David Oware Ansong,Managing Director of Rainbow AgroSciences Ghana Ltd, suppliers of crop-protection products like herbicides and insecticides, added his voice to the call for immediate government intervention.

He revealed that the removal of exemptions on import duty, special import levy among other factors, have catapulted the cost of clearance to about three times of what was paid last year.

“Assuming your budget for clearing last year was 1 million cedis, then it means you have to have 3 million to do the same volume of business in 2023 and this is extremely high. It is important because it is affecting the cost of inputs.

Farmers are now buying their inputs at a very high price and cost of production for the farmers has also gone up. Because of that some of them will cut down on the size of their land because if they do not have money to do a 10-acre they will have to reduce it to 5 acres,” he lamented.

Mr. Ansong intimated that unfortunately as businessmen, they will be compelled to pass on the cost which will eventually affect ordinary consumers and the cascading effect on purchasing power today is clear as daylight.

He said the figures from the Statistical Service presented a 50% inflation on the price of food, emphasizing the urgency needed to be attached to food security in the country.
