Tension at Tuobodom as NPP, NDC fight over traffic light

Nana Agyei Kokoo Takyifiri Beyeeman I – Omanhene of Tuobodom Traditional Area

The Paramount Chief of Tuobodom Traditional Area, Nana Agyei KokooTakyifiri Beyeeman I, has cautioned the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) against unnecessary confrontations.

The Chief advised that the agenda of the two main political parties should always be geared towards human resource development.

He was reacting to a recent impasse between the two parties over the commissioning of traffic lights at Tuobodom, the capital of Techiman North in the Bono East Region.

On August 9, 2023, it took the swift intervention of the police, headed by the District Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Gyabeng Manu, to prevent a clash between the supporters of the two parties over the installation and commissioning of the traffic lights at Tuobodom, when the Chief was not in town.

The conflict stemmed from the claim by both parties for initiating the project.

While the District Chief Executive, Everson Addo Donkor, insisted that he started the traffic lights initiative, the NDC Member of Parliament (MP), Elizabeth Ofosu-Adjare, contended that she also played a role in implementing the project.

It was gathered that when MP Ofosu-Adjare visited the constituency to inspect projects, DCE Donkor allegedly tried to block her from the site of the traffic lights, which nearly sparked violence by both politicians.

Tension, however, remains high in Tuobodom between the NPP and NDC supporters as they claim credit for the traffic lights project.

Nana Agyei Kokoo Takyifiri Beyeeman, at a meeting with the media at his palace, condemned the position of the two parties since their actions impeded development.

He said both parties should be development-oriented and work to develop the district and not fight over a project, which would add to the beauty and development of the town. “Fighting over mere commissioning of a traffic lights Project is uncalled for,” and advised that their actions should bring about progress and development.

Nana Agyei Kokoo Takyifiri Beyeeman called for peace and unity for development, and also appealed to the leadership of the NDC and NPP to call the local leaders of the parties to order to avoid unnecessary tension.

The Omanhene also appealed to the youth to be law abiding and support programmes and policies by the government.

Police Facebook Communication Top-Notch -GIJ Student Researchers reveals

0
Ghana Police Headquarters, Accra

According to research conducted by students of the University of Media, Arts and Communications (UNIMAC), the Ghana Police Service uses social media to positively affect public perception.

A group of four final-year Public Relations (PR) students, under the supervision of Dr. Solace Yawa Safo, a Lecturer at the University, came to this conclusion after analysing 461 random comments from 50 Facebook posts between May and September last year.

The study sighted by The Chronicle found that 36% of feedback in the comment section cheered the Police Service on, making the highest category of feedback, although only 2% expressed active support. The researchers agreed that the applause was because the police used the self-operated Facebook page effectively in telling their own story.

Advice from the public and stiff criticisms closely contested the 15% mark as the second most popular feedback. However, advice made second place only by a point, implying that the Service receives almost as many criticisms as recommendations from the public.

The report indicates that the three themes making 45% of meanings made from sampled comments were positive, while less than 18% were negative.

The student leader of the project group, Author and Public Affairs Officer, Mr. Pious D. Serwonu, who graduated with a first-class honours a few months ago, explained to The Chronicle that the study was inspired by the perceived or actual reputational issues of the Ghana Police Service.

“We had observed very active digital PR by the Police in recent years and wanted to analyze whether it affected public perception in any way and to what extent,” the team lead said.

In his opinion, social media offers organisations the opportunity to speak and listen for themselves, as confirmed by the case study. It offers perhaps the cheapest avenue to implement the dialogic PR model effectively.

The Dialogic PR Model is an approach to an organisation’s relations with its publics, which promotes interaction in honest and ethical ways through effective communication channels.

He indicated that the research did not investigate offline factors that could be influencing responses online, but agreed that the responses are obviously reactions to police online activity.

“What remains to be discovered is the exact kinds of posts that has produced the positive results,” he said, expressing profound gratitude to Dr. Solace Yawa Asafo for her guidance and strict supervision.

According to Dr. Solace Yawa Asafo, Supervisor of the team and Lecturer at UNIMAC, the project was one of the best she supervised in the year. She congratulated the team for the elaborate work which produced the 140-page report, especially the attention to detail as shown in the Appendix.

Fashion Designer and Entrepreneur Ms. Rhoda Adei Djanie, who is a member of the team, described the final year exercise as a great learning experience, and thanked her colleagues, Ms. Ruth Boateng, Ms. Dorcas Amponsah, and Mr. Pious D. Serwonu, for the fruitful collaboration.

Novak Djokovic’s domination of tennis to continue -Andy Murray

Andy Murray says Novak Djokovic is set to dominate men’s tennis for years to come, with a younger generation of players still well below his level.

The Serb, 36, won a record-equalling 24th Grand Slam singles title with victory over Daniil Medvedev in the US Open final in New York on Sunday.

He has no immediate retirement plans.

“It’s up to the young guys to be pushing Novak and looking to overtake him. It doesn’t look like that’s close to happening,” Murray told BBC Sport.

“Novak’s been an incredible player for a very long time, like Roger and Rafa, it’s the longevity and how long they’ve all been able to do that for.

“Novak’s longevity has been the greatest. He’s played at this level for such a long time now.”

Djokovic was beaten in this year’s Wimbledon final by 20-year-old Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz.

Three-time Grand Slam winner Murray, who was speaking on the eve of Great Britain’s Davis Cup campaign, said the wrong conclusions were drawn from Djokovic’s defeat at SW19.

Murray, 36, added: “I said that after Wimbledon, everyone was saying it was a changing of the guard, but it wasn’t for me.

“It was quite clear Novak had won two of the first three slams and was very, very close in the final of Wimbledon.

“He proved that he’s the best player in the world again yesterday and like I said it’s up to the youngsters to improve enough to take him.

“I don’t think he’s going to stop at 24 titles, but you never know how long it will last. Physically, motivation, whether someone like Alcaraz improves – he’s an amazing player Alcaraz, he’s brilliant, but to do what Novak is doing on a consistent basis is different.

“It’s not the same as doing it for 15-20 weeks a year like Novak is doing, every time he steps on the court. I do think that Alcaraz will soon get to that level but I don’t think this is going to be the last time that Novak wins a Grand Slam.”

Djokovic is set to miss Serbia’s Davis Cup tie against South Korea on Tuesday but is poised to play against Spain on Friday and on Saturday against the Czech Republic.

Paul Pogba provisionally suspended after drugs test

Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba has been provisionally suspended from playing after a drugs test found elevated levels of testosterone in his system.

Italy’s national anti-doping tribunal (Nado) said Pogba was tested after Juve’s 3-0 win at Udinese on 20 August.

The 30-year-old France international, an unused substitute, was randomly selected for post-match drug testing.

If found guilty of doping, he could face a ban of between two and four years.

Juventus said in a statement: “Juventus Football Club announces that today, 11 September, 2023, the footballer Paul Labile Pogba received a precautionary suspension order from the National Anti-Doping Tribunal following the results of tests carried out on 20 August, 2023.

“The club reserves the right to consider the next procedural steps.”

Tears & troubles in Turin – Pogba’s year to forget Pogba considered retiring over blackmail plot Pogba’s agent, Rafaela Pimenta, said she was “awaiting the second sample and cannot have an opinion before the results”.

“What is certain is that Paul Pogba never wanted to break a rule,” Pimenta added.

Nado said Pogba had violated anti-doping rules when it found the prohibited substance “non-endogenous testosterone metabolites” and the results were “consistent with the exogenous origin of the target compounds”.

Testosterone is a hormone that increases the endurance of athletes.

Pogba has three days to produce a counter-analysis of the result to Nado.

Juventus re-signed Pogba on a four-year deal in July 2022 after the player ran down his contract at Manchester United and left as a free agent.

However, Pogba’s return to Turin has been beset by persistent injury problems which also saw him miss last year’s World Cup in Qatar.

Pogba has played a total of 51 minutes as a substitute this season in games with Bologna and Empoli.

Last season he managed 108 minutes over six Serie A games, three brief appearances and one assist in the Europa League, and 11 minutes in the Coppa Italia – a total of 162 minutes and no goals.

Pogba’s injury problems resurfaced recently, with Juventus boss Massimo Allegri saying the player picked up a minor back problem following his appearance against Empoli.

Former Spanish FA president to appear in court over Hermoso kiss

0
Luis Rubiales had been president of Spain's football federation since May 2018

Former Spanish Football Federation president Luis Rubiales will appear in a Madrid court on Friday over his kiss of Spain forward Jenni Hermoso.

Hermoso filed a legal complaint last week over Rubiales kissing her on the lips following her country’s Women’s World Cup final win on 20 August.

Rubiales has been summoned by a high court judge to respond to accusations of sexual assault and coercion.

He will appear before a magistrate at 12:00 local time (11:00 BST).

Hermoso, 33, said the kiss was not consensual, while Rubiales has claimed it was “mutual” and “consensual”.

Luis Rubiales resigns as president of Spanish FA over Jenni Hermoso kiss

Rubiales resignation a win for Spain’s women’s team

The kiss that shook Spanish & global football

Rubiales quit as Spanish FA president on Sunday as a result of the controversy, and has also resigned from his position as vice-president of Uefa’s executive committee.

Hermoso’s complaint was one of sexual assault but last week prosecutor Marta Durantez Gil added an allegation of coercion after the forward revealed that some of her relatives had been pressured by Rubiales and his “professional entourage” to say she “justified and approved what happened”.

On Monday, Judge Francisco de Jorge of the National Court accepted the complaint and assigned a magistrate to investigate the case.

After completing an investigation the magistrate will then either make a recommendation for the case to go to trial or be dismissed.

Jorge also requested video footage of the incident from Spain’s public broadcaster RTVE, plus videos of the team’s celebrations published online by Spanish newspapers El Pais, AS and La Vanguardia, be submitted as evidence.

The fallout from the kiss has engulfed Spanish football in recent weeks and overshadowed Spain’s World Cup win, with Rubiales ignoring repeated calls to resign before eventually quitting on Sunday.

The charge of sexual assault can carry a punishment ranging from a fine to four years in prison under Spanish law.

The Federal Capital Territory, FCT chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, has directed its members across the six area councils of the nation’s capital city to embark on strike from Monday, September 11, 2023.

The action came after a seven-day ultimatum earlier given the six area council chairmen to pay the 40 percent peculiar allowance and other outstanding allowances of primary school teachers by the union lapsed without success.

The union attributed the action to over non-payment of teachers’ 25 months arrears as well as non-implementation of 40 percent peculiar allowance for its members by the council chairmen.

The development has put the resumption of secondary and primary schools across the FCT which were to resume for first term academic session on Monday, September 11, 2023,on hold.

The union gave the directive in a communique issued at the end of its emergency State Wing Executive Council, SWEC, meeting held at the Teachers’ House in Gwagwalada.

The Communiqué was jointly signed by NUT State Chairman, Comrade Stephen Knabayi and secretary, Margaret F. Jethro.

“After extensive deliberation on the state of education in the FCT, the welfare of its members particularly the seven days ultimatum issued to the six area council chairmen to pay the 40 percent peculiar allowance and other outstanding allowances of primary school teachers, nothing had been done to address these issues,” the communique read.

The communique added that the council chairmen failed to pay other outstanding allowances, which the union said, included non-implementation of promotion arrears, non-upgrading of concerned teachers, non-implementation of annual increments, non-implementation of promotion letters released for teachers, among others.

“And having explored and exhausted all available avenues of getting these outstanding demands of the concerned teachers met without the desired result including non-commitment of the councils to the welfare of primary school teachers, the SWEC in-session resolved to direct all primary school teachers to embark on an infinite strike action on Monday, September 11, 2023,” the communique said.

The FCT chapter of NUT, vowed that it would not call off the strike action until its demands are met while calling on parents across the FCT to remain guided by keeping their wards and children safe at home.
