At least 100 killed in blaze at wedding party in Qaraqosh

At least 100 people have died and 150 others are injured after a fire broke out during a wedding in Iraq’s biggest Christian town.

Hundreds were celebrating in a banqueting hall in Qaraqosh in Nineveh province when it happened.

It is not known what started the fire but some reports suggest fireworks set it off.

Flammable panels fuelled the flames, causing parts of the ceiling to catch fire and fall, fire officials said.

“The fire led to the collapse of parts of the hall as a result of the use of highly flammable, low-cost building materials that collapse within minutes when fire breaks out,” Iraq’s civil defence directorate said, quoted by state news agency INA.

It was not immediately clear if the bride and the groom were among the victims.

Footage posted online showed the couple on the dance floor before flaming chunks begin falling onto the dance floor.

Firefighters could be seen climbing over the wreckage of the building in search of survivors on Wednesday morning.

Eyewitnesses said hundreds of people had been in the venue when it caught fire at around 22:45 local time (19:45 GMT) on Tuesday.

“We saw the fire pulsating, coming out of the hall. Those who managed got out and those who didn’t got stuck. Even those who made their way out were broken,” Imad Yohana, a 34-year-old who escaped the inferno, told Reuters.

Another wedding guest, Rania Waad, who sustained a burn to her hand, said that as the bride and groom were slow dancing “fireworks started to climb to the ceiling, the whole hall went up in flames”.

“We couldn’t see anything,” the 17-year-old told news agency AFP. “We were suffocating, we didn’t know how to get out.”

Igbo Chief urges Nigerians to be law-abiding

His Royal Majesty Eze Dr. AMB. Jude Chukwude Ihenetu, Igbo traditional leader in Ghana, has reiterated the need for Nigerians to abide by the laws of their host country.

He said abiding by the laws puts them in good standing with the country, and enables them to thrive at all levels.

Speaking at the 2023 annual Yam Festival celebrated in Accra last week, Dr. Ihenetu emphasised the importance of law, peace and security, as well as the relationship that has existed between Ghana and Nigeria over decades.

He was of the firm belief that the festival would cement the symbiotic relationship between these two West African countries through culture, trade and diplomacy.

Dr. Ihenetu spoke of the transfer of culture to the youth and Africa unity as key ingredients for uplifting the continent.

The festival, dubbed ‘2023 Ndigbo Ghana,’ was held under the theme: “Sustaining the culture and tradition of the Igbo people in the diaspora.”

The festival is the 11th Igno Day (Iri ji) or New Yam Festival celebrated in Ghana.

About the Yam Festival

The Iri ji festival is celebrated by the Igbo ethnic group in Nigeria, who have sojourned to neighbouring Ghana.

The festival marks the conclusion of yam harvesting, new yam and a start of another cycle of farming.

In Igbo culture, yam is an important crop, hence, the celebration and invocation of God’s blessings by the Paramount Chief on his subjects.

He performs this ritual by cutting through toasted yam, dipping a piece in a sauce and taking a bite.

There was a rich display of culture, particularly how the chiefs were accompanied to the durbar ground amid singing, dancing, musketry and loud cheering.

Young woman carried buckets of yam to the durbar as proof of this year’s harvest.

Awards

His Royal Majesty also awarded some distinguished individuals for their roles and contributions in their society, country, and the Western African region as a whole.

Some of the awardees on whom the title Chief was bestowed upon as an honour were Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addae, Chief Executive Officer at Peace and Love Hospitals, Blessed Godsbrain Smart also known as Captain Smart, morning show host at Onua TV, and Beatrice Agyemang Abbey, CEO of Media General.

Guests

The festival was graced by the National Chief Imam, Osmanu Nuhu Sharubutu, and chiefs from the various traditional areas of the country.

Afriyie Akoto to shake A/R with his ‘Message of Hope’

Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto

A presidential hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, will next week take his Message of Hope to the Ashanti Region, the party’s stronghold, where he is expected to rally support for his flagbearership ambition, come November 4, 2023.

The Cambridge University-trained Economist, who is fast permeating through the hearts of delegates of the NPP, and in the process changing the narrative as far as the party’s flagbearership race is concerned, will on Monday, October 2 to Tuesday, October 3, 2023, meet with specialised groups of delegates of the UP Tradition at different locations in the region.

He will on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, scale up the interactions by meeting Polling Station Executives, Electoral Area Coordinators, and Constituency Executives at a forum to be held in Kumasi.

The forum will provide a platform for Dr. Akoto, a former two-term Member of Parliament for Kwadaso constituency, to further convince the delegates as the best candidate who can retain power for the party and address the myriads of welfare challenges confronting them.

The home-coming event will also afford the delegates the opportunity to ask Dr. Akoto questions pertaining to the forward march of the party, especially, at a time where unity in the party has been questioned by political analysts.

Dr. Akoto, who has worked in the UN Systems for more than 18 years will cap his Ashanti Regional tour with radio station interviews on Thursday, October 5, and Friday, October 6, 2023, respectively.

Touted as ‘Adwumawura’ (workaholic) by Ghanaian farmers, the former Minister of Food and Agriculture who is number three (3) on the ballot paper will then move to the Northern Region where he will hold a similar exercise. From the Northern Region, Dr. Akoto will also scale up his visits to the Bono and Ahafo regions, the Eastern and finally to the Greater Accra Regions.

Meanwhile, his team is on the grounds working tirelessly to ensure that he secures victory in the party’s flagbearership race.

The astute politician will on November 4, 2023, lock horns with three other candidates for the NPP presidential primary. He placed 4th in the Special Delegates Conference held on Saturday, August 26, 2023, surprising many political pundits and pollsters.

Over 210,000 party delegates are expected to exercise their franchise in the much-publicized November 4, 2023 Presidential Primary of the NPP.

Alan’s resignation is a tip of the iceberg -Agyarko

0
Agyarko Boakye Kyerematen

A former flag-bearer aspirant of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Agyarko Boakye Kyerematen, has disclosed that the exit of Alan Kyerematen is the tip of the iceberg.

According to him, many with similar sentiments, like Alan, have resigned from the party in their hearts and are only waiting to vote against the NPP in the next general elections.

“There are many in our party today who have, out of dismay, resigned in their hearts and are only waiting to walk away from us at the ballot box,” Agyarko revealed.

In a statement that did not give specific names, Boakye Agyarko raised critical issues going into the November 4 presidential primary on the back of accusations of unfair treatment meted out to some aspirants.

He was compelled to withdraw from the race after the National Executive Council of the party decided they only would vote to choose between him and Francis Addai Nimoh on the one to join the main contest on November 4.

Following that decision, Boakye Agyarko lost interest in the race, did not state his future plans, but hinted yesterday that supposed disgruntled members who were silent would punish the NPP at the polls.

He referred to history to warn the party about the consequences of the event with the former Trade and Industry Minister, Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen.

“The history of our tradition must teach us that the consequences of events such as has now befallen us since the heady days of 1951 to date have always been negative and have cast a deep and lingering shadow on our electoral fortunes,” he wrote yesterday.

The former Minister for Energy continued that, “at least, my brother Kyerematen has put his thoughts and feelings on paper for all to appreciate. How about the many who harbour similar and maybe more petulant sentiments in their hearts, but are not openly expressing same?”

INTROSPECTION

Boakye Agyarko, who has openly not castigated the party but maintained his cool since pulling out of the race, thinks that Alan’s exit should be a wakeup call rather than the open display of triumphalist arrogance.

He thinks now is the time to calm ruffled feathers and assuage wounded sentiments across the length and breadth of the NPP.

He provokes the party to examine itself to see if it is indeed true and faithful to the tenets and values of the UP Tradition, “or if we have metamorphosed into an ugly shadow of what we should be. These must become the urgent task ahead of us.”

RESPECT DECISION

Boakye Agyarko’s thought-provoking statement follows the response of the NPP to the resignation of Alan Kyerematen.

The NPP, in its response, indicated that it respected Alan’s decision to resign, but also had reservations.

The party claimed the mode of the resignation was premeditated and irrevocable, coming after the National Chairman had visited Alan in an attempt to bring the ten aspirants together, but no such indication was given.

Meanwhile, the party observed that his resignation was nothing new, adding that the party was focused on its common goal of maintaining power in 2024.

Feature: Is the Sun Setting on the UP Tradition?

In order to maintain stranglehold on Ghana, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, passed a law in 1957, prohibiting any political party formed on ethnic, religious and regional lines to practice in Ghana. Thus, with the Avoidance of Discrimination Act (Act 38) passed, six political parties, namely the National Liberation Movement (NLM), the Northern People’s Party (NPP), the Ga Shifimokpee, Muslim Association Party (MAP), Togoland Congress and Anlo Youth Association (AYA) merged to form a national party, the United Party (UP) on October 13, 1957.

Even though his CPP dominated Parliament, Nkrumah did all he could to get the UP out. For example, freedom of speech and expression were curtailed in the country, with laws like the PDA and False Report Bill, jailing anyone without trial for saying or doing or perceived to be saying or doing anything that is against the president, his government and his party.

With Nkrumah’s National Assembly (Disqualification) Act implemented in 1959, MPs who failed to carry out their parliamentary duties were removed from the House. So, any MP who seemed to be against Nkrumah was first framed under the PDA and detained in jail.

His absence from the House would have him disqualified and a by-election would then be organised. Here, the CPP would use its incumbency to win the seat.

Still not satisfied, Nkrumah implemented the One-Party state in 1964, where the only official political party was the CPP. The colours of the national flag were changed to the colours of the CPP. Nkrumah became president for life and was free to do anything at all in the country; free to even dismiss judges from the bench if they came out with verdicts he never liked. And interestingly, in the General Elections of 1965, instead allowing the people to choose which of his CPP members they want for MP, Nkrumah appointed the MPs into the House without any election.

By, 1964, the United Party ceased to exist. Then in 1966, a coup was staged and Nkrumah was ousted. The main architects of the coup were Kotoka and Harley who were Anlo Ewes and Afrifa, who was an Asante Akan. Harley was one of Nkrumah’s top security agents who falsely accused many under the PDA and False Report Bill and had them jailed without trial.

In 1969, the UP resurrected in the form of the Progress Party and swept the polls to form government. However, in less than three years, the military overthrew the PP government and Nkrumah had this to say that, even though he never supported coups, it was good and great that the socialists were back.

In 1978, with the ban on party politics lifted, the UP Tradition assembled to form a united political party to contest the 1979 elections. There were however, two issues on the table: one was, the core of leadership of the new party to be solely members of the erstwhile Progress Party and the other was, to accept other people who were now thinking in line with the UP Tradition. In the midst of the discussion, William Ofori-Atta (Paa Willie) and a few others who supported the latter left the meeting in a rage.

Still, hoping to have a united party, Appiah Menka dispatched H.E. Edward Akufo-Addo and Rev. Sintim-Misa to go and invited Paa Willie back. The Akyem politician, told them he had taken a decision to be a minister of God, meaning he was quitting politics to become a pastor. So, they left, only to hear that he had formed a political party, the United National Convention (UNC) to contest the 1979 General Elections.

The UP Tradition became the Popular Front Party (PFP).

When there was need for a run-off to decide who was to be president, the leadership of the PFP, went to see Paa Willie to back the UP Tradition and help elect Victor Owusu, as president. He turned his back on his own and went to support the CPP bloc party the People National Party (PNP) to win the run-off. With that, the UP Tradition was once again quenched in national politics.

In 1981 the PNP was also toppled by Rawlings who after eleven years, lifted the ban on political activities. Clubs and organisations appeared on the scene to help form political parties. Among them was the All-People’s Party formed by Victor Owusu to invite all in the UP Tradition to come home and form a party. When it did not appear to be making any headway, a veteran politician from the UP Tradition called Kwaku Attakora Mensah Gyimah established the Danquah-Busia Club which caught on and from this, the New Patriotic Party was formed.

In 2000, the NPP won the General Elections, and in 2001, H.E. John Agyekum Kufuor formed government. The UP Tradition resurrected again after twenty-eight years.

All through Ghana political history from 1966, there has been a wrong perception that the UP Tradition connived with the CIA to topple Nkrumah. The CIA in a Confidential Report to the State Department of the USA, admitted that indeed it did all it could to get rid of Nkrumah, however it faced challenges like it did in Cuba and so it had no hand in the February 24, 1966 coup which toppled Nkrumah.

Some seasoned historians came out with why the CPP was overthrown. In his quest to touch everything made him touched the military with the dismissal of J.A. Ankrah and others. Feeling threatened, the military struck back and it was given a hero’s welcome by the people of Ghana when it overthrew Nkrumah.

However, this sick mentality is still on, and the socialists are doing all they can to make sure that the UP Tradition is buried for good.

Rawlings came and attacked and destroyed businesses and industries belonging to people perceived to belong to the UP Tradition, which had UP gurus limping and bleeding when it came to forming a party in 1992.

The young businessmen and entrepreneurs were assembled by Alan Kyerematen to form the Young Executive Forum which stood in to assist greatly in building up the New Patriotic Party into a formidable party in the country.

Thirty-one years after helping to build the NPP, Alan Kyerematen had decided to abandoned the party and go independent.

He has stated his reasons and this sunk in. The NPP came to respond to Alan’s resignation and it did so in such a matured manner, showing the great wisdom of an elder addressing a dicey issue that if care was not taken could tear things apart. I doff my hat to the National Chairman and General Secretary of the NPP for that statement.

In its response, however, the NPP came out to deny Alan’s claim that the party is managed by a few individuals when it comes to selecting flag bearers. The Party referred to the expansion of the Electoral College from 2,300 in 2007 to over 200,000 today.

The party however did not mention the Super Delegates Congress which has less than 1,000 members and who would decide for the National Delegates Congress, which set of five aspirants it should elect the flag bearer, from.

I have already expressed elsewhere that this Super Delegates Congress idea is undemocratic, since if the Electoral College was expanded from 2,300 to over 200,000, based on the reason that numbers like 2,300 can easily be bought, then why do people think that numbers less than 1,000 cannot be bought?

Anyway, this Alan’s resignation should not be seen as a moment to attack him or the NPP. This is a moment to review the party and seek to correct all that needs to be, for the sake of the growth and strength of the UP Tradition.

Because if someone, after his long years of sacrifices would leave the party, how many more are in the NPP who have challenges which are not addressed and would also follow suit?

The party should organise no-hold bars meetings in every constituency and get well informed about how members feel about the party. There are issues that need to be addressed for the UP Tradition sake. For one thing, how can directives be given that no NPP persons should be employed into government and state service, and we are told it is political neutrality?

Alan going independent could rather spell doom for the UP Tradition in general and the NPP in particular. In 2000, Goosie Tandoh’s NRP split from the NDCand went into elections.

Together with some other aggrieved NDC members who run independent, the NDC lost six seats to the NPP, namely Jaman, Akwapim, Akwatia, Ashiaman, Krowor and Shama. If the NDC had gone united it would have had 95 seats and the NPP would have had 94 seats and this may affect President Kufuor’s chances in the run-off.

In 2008, the NPP faced the same problem with about seventeen of its members running independent and, in most cases, the NDC candidates went through with less votes than the combined NPP and its independent votes.

The four independent candidates who won their seats and became MPs, were all from the NPP.If NPP had gone into the elections united, it would have secured fourteen extra seats coming  out as majority in Parliament with 121 seats and NDC next from behind with 103 seats. The presidential run-off would have favoured NPP’s Nana Addo.

Alan’s resignation and going independent is most likely going to affect the chances of the NPP and in fact, the 2024 electoral results could nail the coffin of the UP Tradition. For one thing the NPP is not going into Elections 2024 united and on occasions where internal wranglings cost the party elections, what worse cana split, like Alan’s not do?

The way, the NPP treats this Alan issue will determine whether the UP Tradition will become demised once again but this time, maybe forever or whether the Tradition will stand up against the storms again and come out stronger.

As the socialists are desiring to see the UP Tradition destroyed, it is sad that the Tradition itself is carelessly killing itself and ushering in the dawn of its, sunset.

Man United Antony to speak with Police after returning to England

Manchester United winger Antony

Manchester United winger Antony has flown back to England from Brazil and has agreed to meet Greater Manchester Police to answer questions about the serious allegations made against him.

It is understood the 23-year-old is willing to surrender his phone to GMP to aid their investigation.

His ex-partner Gabriela Cavallin made allegations of abuse via Brazilian news outlet UOL, which Antony denies.

Further assault allegations followed from Rayssa de Freitas and Ingrid Lana.

United say they are taking the allegations “seriously” and have granted Antony leave with full pay to deal with the allegations.

Antony had been in Brazil since reporting for international duty but was withdrawn from the squad when news of the allegations emerged.

On 4 September Brazilian news outlet UOL published allegations made by his former girlfriend Cavallin, in which she accused Antony of attacking her “with a headbutt” in a Manchester hotel room on 15 January, leaving her with a cut head which needed treatment from a doctor.

Cavallin also alleges she was punched in the chest, causing damage to a silicone breast implant, which required corrective surgery.

Antony previously said on social media about Cavallin’s claims: “I can calmly state that the accusations are false and that the evidence already produced and the other evidence that will be produced demonstrate that I am innocent of the accusations made.”

He released a statement in June saying he had been falsely accused by his former girlfriend of domestic violence. He was interviewed by police in Brazil in June but was not charged.

Local police raised no objection to the player returning to the UK.

Two further allegations arose when De Freitas and Lana each claimed Antony assaulted them in 2022, which Antony denies.

Lana, a 33-year-old banker, claimed in an interview with Brazil’s Record TV that she hit her head when “pushed against a wall” by Antony at his house in Manchester in October 2022. Credit: bbc.com

Chelsea have not scored in September after spending £1Billion

0
Mauricio Pochettino

Sunday’s home defeat against Aston Villa must have felt like déja vu for Chelsea fans.

Chances came and went for Mauricio Pochettino‘s men, and then they were punished by Ollie Watkins as the visitors claimed a 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge.

There was genuine optimism at Chelsea heading into the season that they could put their dire 2022-23 campaign behind them and start to build something under Pochettino, but the early signs are not looking promising.

The Blues have taken just five points from their opening six games, recording their worst league start since 1978, and it isn’t hard to see their main issue – scoring goals.

They only netted 38 times last term, and their goals-per-game ratio is even worse in 2023-24 with the team scoring just five times in six matches. Three of those came in one game against newly-promoted Luton, who have only picked up one point themselves.

Chelsea’s disappointing results have left them 14th in the table, already nine points adrift of the top four. But have they been unlucky?

According to Opta statistics, Pochettino’s men actually rank highly compared their Premier League rivals in a number of attacking categories this month.

They sit third out of the 20 top-flight clubs when it comes to total shots (45) and touches inside the opposition box (110) in September.

Their expected goals (xG) is also up at 5.49 for the month, placing them fifth. It is clear that opportunities are being created, and these numbers indicate they should be competing for a European spot.

The problem is finding the finishing touch. Chelsea are the only Premier League team to not score in September, and they are tied for third when it comes to most big chances missed (seven).

They also only rank 12th when it comes to shots on target (12), suggesting a lack of composure in front of goal.

Osimhen threatens legal action, deletes his photos in Napoli shirt, after club’s TikTok account brands him as a ‘coconut’

0
Victor Osimhen

Victor Osimhen has removed nearly all photos of him in a Napoli shirt from his Instagram account following a racist TikTok video from the club which labelled the forward ‘a coconut’.

The striker who fired Napoli to a first league title in over 30 years last season, was the target of a video where he was mocked by his own club on social media on Tuesday.

One video centered on his penalty miss during Sunday’s goalless draw against Bologna.

It was a rare miss for the Nigerian who has scored 62 goals in 107 appearances for the Serie A side, yet the video appeared to mock him for his attempts to persuade for the penalty to be given.

The video showed the 24-year-old appealing for a penalty, but using a strange sped-up voice with the caption ‘Gimme penalty please’ before showing him blazing the spot-kick wide of the post.

A second video allegedly from the club’s account, which has been circulated online and since deleted, compared Osimhen to a ‘coconut’ – widely viewed as a racial slur.

Osimhen has removed the majority of photos of him wearing a Napoli shirt from Instagram, with a single post remaining.

There is a now serious risk that Osimhen decides do not participate in Napoli’s Serie A match against Udinese on Wednesday night.

The incident has case serious doubt over the relationship between last season’s top scorer in Serie A and the reigning Italian champions.

A lack of dialogue over contract negotiations between Osimhen and Aurelio De Laurentiis’ club has already led to concerns over the Nigerian forward’s future.

Osimhen’s contract expires in June 2025, which could led to Napoli being forced to consider a sale in either the January or summer transfer windows.

The TikTok videos posted from Napoli’s account and Osimhen’s agent Roberto Calenda threatening legal action against the club has created a media storm and concern among the club’s supporters.

All the anticipation will shift to the match against Udinese to see if Osimhen will start or begin the match on the bench.

The rift between the player and the club has created a difficult situation, which has increased the likelihood Osimhen could be sold.

NPP Will Break The ‘8’ Without Butterfly Man … General Secretary Kodua assures mass followers

0
Justin Kodua Frimpong, General Secretary of New Patriotic Party (NPP)

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it has accepted the resignation of Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen from the party, but insists that the decision would not thwart their efforts in breaking ‘the 8’.

Addressing a news conference in Accra yesterday, the General Secretary of the party, Justin Kodua Frimpong said the resignation of the former Trade and Industry Minister from the Elephant family was not novel.

According to him, some prominent members in both NPP and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) resigned from their parties, but their departures did not affect the political parties.

“Under the Fourth Republic, both the NPP and the NDC have had some leading members of their party break ranks to either form their own party or join other political parties, yet the mother party remained resilient.

“Going into the 2024 general elections, the party has a message, and we use this opportunity to commend Mr. Kyerematen for admitting the good work the government has done, under his then ministry,” he said.

THE MESSAGE

According to NPP, it would go into next year’s presidential election with records, including those from the Trade and Industry sector, which Alan headed.

The party outlined the various achievements, which are the establishment of the One District, One Factory (1D1F) initiative, the establishment of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AFCFTA) and the development of new strategic anchor industries, including automobile assembly and component manufacturing.

Others are the establishment of business resource centres and technology solutions centres all over the country. There is also the Integrated Customs Service (UNIPASS), the establishment of industrial parks, including the greater Kumasi industrial city and the Special Economic Zone.

In addition is the development of a national export strategy with a target of achieving export revenue of 25 billion US dollars by 2030, the introduction of business regulatory reforms and public-private dialogue mechanisms to facilitate government interaction with the private sector

REAFFIRM

The NPP, the General Secretary claimed, has always been a dynamic and resilient political party, adding that the turn of events serves as an opportunity for them to demonstrate their unity, fortitude and unwavering commitment to the principles the party was founded upon.

The General Secretary urged party faithfuls to “reaffirm” their dedication towards the party, as it strives to win the 2024 general election and make a monumental record.

“We urge party faithfuls to reaffirm their dedication towards this common goal. Our party’s strength has always been derived from the unity and resilience of our members, and we call upon each and every one of you to rally together and uphold the principles that define us.

Indeed, we are the NPP and the elephant is our winning symbol.”

APPEAL

The party commended its rank and file for remaining steadfast and openly rallying behind it, reassuring them that the elephant is a winning symbol.

Kodua begged members who were hitherto supporting Mr. Kyerematen by virtue of his membership in the party to continue supporting the party to ‘break the eight’.

“Together, we shall overcome challenges and together, we shall achieve success. We urge all party faithfuls to remain committed, dedicated and resolute in the ongoing voter limited registration exercise,” he said.

Some known members of the NPP, who openly supported Alan’s candidacy for the flag-bearer contest, have disassociated themselves since his resignation.

The likes of Abena Osei Asare, Member of Parliament (MP) for Atiwa East; Davis Ansah Opoku, MP for Mpraeso and Cathering Ablema Afeku, aspiring MP for Evalue-Gwira, have all indicated they remain committed to the course of the NPP.

Veep pleads with parents to avoid registration of minors

0
Veep Mahamudu Bawumia

The Vice President and the presidential aspirant of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mahamudu Bawumia has appealed to parents to avoid the temptation of allowing their children who are underage to register in the ongoing Limited Voter Registration.

According to him, both the parents and children could suffer legal and other consequences for entering the register before they are qualified to do so.
“We have received reports from across the country of attempts to register minors in the ongoing Limited Registration Exercise. This is very worrying.

“Apart from the illegality of such efforts, it also amounts to endangering the lives of these children, because if they enter the national records with the wrong age, it will have an effect on them throughout their lives.

“It means, for instance, that they will be going on retirement before their actual age. They may not benefit from policies or programmes specifically designed to meet the needs of the youth.

And it may have other unforeseen consequences”, he warned.
Dr Bawumia, who suspended his nationwide engagement with NPP Delegates on 23rd September, 2023 to enable the party concentrate fully on the Registration exercise, emphasised yesterday during his tour of registration centres in Accra that there was the  need for a clean and credible register for the 2024 general elections and beyond.
“The Constitution guarantees every Ghanaian of the right age and sound mind the right to vote.

I would therefore like to urge all stakeholders- parents, guardians, new registrants, parties – to cooperate with officials of the Electoral Commission to have a smooth and incident-free exercise to produce a register we can all be proud of. I would also like to thank officials of the EC for the great work they have done so far, despite the initial challenges,” he said.
