Governor Alex Otti of Abia State

The Abia State Government has discovered over 50 decomposing bodies and over 20 headless bodies around Lokpanta Regional Cattle Market in Umunneochi Local Government Area of the state.

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State disclosed this during a media briefing in Umuahia on Sunday night, according to a report by Vanguard newspaper.

Mr Otti said the bodies were discovered when the state government raided Umunneochi Axis after ransoms paid to suspected kidnappers were traced to the area some weeks ago.

“During the raid, we made shocking discoveries. In less than 48 hours, we recovered over 50 dead bodies around the cattle market in Umunneochi.

“We recovered over 20 decomposing headless women, children! We recovered so many skeletons of people killed — men,” he said.

“We also discovered that gunrunning, prostitution and so many things were happening in the market,” the governor added. Mr Otti expressed regret that the vicinity of the market had become a den of criminals and vowed to eject all residents out of the market.

“So, we realised that the first thing to be done is to secure the market. We went in and brought down many brothels. And we felt that the market, just like any other market, should be a day market which starts in the morning and closes in the evening,” the governor stated.

Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila and President Bola Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu, on Monday, expressed confidence in the integrity of his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila.

The President, who before the week’s Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting commenced inside the Council Chambers, State House, said all campaigns of calumny and insinuations against his Chief of Staff should stop.

The President spoke to issues he had observed and had not been comfortable with, including unauthorised persons gaining access into the Council Chambers of the State House.

Gbajabiamila was the Speaker of the House of Representatives between 2019 and 2023 and had won his re-election into the House for the sixth consecutive term to represent the Surulere 1 Federal Constituency during the February 25 National Assembly election before his appointment as Chief of Staff to the President mid-2023.

He is one of the strong allies of Tinubu, a former Lagos State governor between May 1999 and May 2007.

‘I am not going away’, Atiku says after Supreme Court verdict on Tinubu

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 25, 2023 presidential election, Atiku Abubakar, says he will not leave the political arena despite the Supreme Court verdict of October 26, 2023 that affirmed the electoral victory of President Bola Tinubu.

“As for me and my party, this phase of work is done. However, I am not going to go away, if you think I am going to go away, forget about it,” the former Vice President said at a press briefing on Monday in the nation’s capital, Abuja.

“For as long as I breathe, I will continue to struggle with other Nigerians to deepen our democracy. I will continue to work for the return of political and economical restructuring that the country needs,” he added.

Atiku, a former Vice President between 1999 and 2007, have tried to become Nigeria’s President for about three decades.

Despite his unsuccessful attempts, the PDP stalwart said he won’t “go away”.

Atiku insisted that Tinubu, the then candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was not qualified to contest the February 2023 presidential poll.

He accused the Supreme Court and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of supporting illegality, identity theft, impersonation, forgery of certificates and perjury.

Atiku said when people lose confidence in the electoral process, democracy is on life support.

He said though the apex court’s judgment was final, it leaves much to be desired.

Atiku and his Labour Party (LP) counterpart, Peter Obi, had challenged the victory of Tinubu in the last election up to the apex court.

Not satisfied with the verdict of the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT) earlier in September, Atiku and Obi approached the Supreme Court seeking the nullification of Tinubu’s election on the grounds of double nomination, alleged certificate forgery, non-transmission of results electronically, 25% votes in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), amongst others.

However, last Thursday, the Justice John Okoro-led panel of the apex court threw out all the appeals by Atiku and Obi for lacking merit. The panel thereafter upheld electoral victory of Tinubu.

Confusion, tear gas rock Rivers Assembly as Lawmakers begin Fubara’s impeachment

Rivers State House of Assembly

A fresh crisis has engulfed the Rivers State House of Assembly as the lawmakers on Monday launched an impeachment proceeding against the state Governor, Siminalayi Fubara. The House also removed its leader, Edison Ehie for alleged supervision of the burning of the Assembly Complex on Sunday night.

House Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly Hon Edison Ehie has been removed from his position as the Leader of the House. This followed an emergency sitting on Monday morning at the House auditorium after the hallowed chambers was burnt down last night.

House Speaker, Martins Amaewhule, expressed sadness at the alleged arson claiming the incident was supervised by the Government House and Ehie from Ahoada East.

Three items were brought before the House on Monday: the removal of Ehie as House Leader; the impeachment of Fubara; and the suspension of Ehie, and three other lawmakers — Victor Okoh from Bonny, Goodboy Sokari also from Ahoada West as well as Adolphus Timothy from Opobo Nkoro.

Sylvanus Nwankwo from Omuma presented the notice of impeachment as signed by 24 members.

The governor is accused of acts of gross misconduct unbecoming of his office.

The Speaker asked that the notice of impeachment be forwarded to the governor and allow the legal process to take its course.

The plenary was adjourned “sine die”.

Fubara later stormed the Assembly Complex amid the development.

The House members subsequently fled the Assembly Complex for safety as tear gas was fired outside the Complex.

A protest immediately broke out outside the Complex with supporters of the governors resisting his planned impeachment.

It was unclear if the fire was connected with the political imbroglio but rumours of a rift between Fubara and his predecessor Nyesom Wike who is now Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister have been brewing for some time now.

GII, IT, LUPSA organise orientation workshop for some MMDAs in A/R

The Ghana Integrity Initiative (GII), the Local Chapter of Transparency International (TI), in collaboration with the Land Use and Spatial Planning Authority (LUPSA), has organised an orientation workshop for the Spatial Planning Committee (SPC) and Technical Sub Committee (TSC) members of some Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) at the Prempeh Assembly Hall in Kumasi.

Mrs. Mary A. Addah, Executive Director of GII, delivering her welcome remarks

The orientation workshop enhanced the knowledge, skills and competencies of SPC and TSC members in their respective spatial planning roles within the Greater Kumasi area, and also provided the participants with a clear understanding of the significance and scope of land use and spatial planning services.

The Land Use and Spatial Planning Act 2016(Act 924) and the Legislative Instrument (LI) 2384 mandate the SPCs and the TSCs to promote openness, accountability and ethical standards that enabled an effective and efficient implementation of the land use and spatial planning mandates at the MMDAs.

The SPC is therefore a Committee of a District Assembly constituted in accordance with Section 37 of the Act 925 to perform the functions of preparation of district and local plans and approve development and building permits and functions spelt out under the Act and the Regulations.

The Technical Sub-Committee on the other hand is a Sub Committee of the SPC which is also constituted in accordance with Section 39 to perform the functions spelt out under this Act and in the Regulations including the preparations of district and local plans and approve development and building permits.

Mrs. Mary Awelana Addah, Executive Director of GII, in welcome remark, stated that urbanisation was a force of change; a catalyst for economic growth and societal development, but could also be a crippling force that stifles progress and exacerbates inequalities when marred by corruption and mismanagement.

Mr. Chapman Owusu-Sekyere, Ag. Deputy Chief Executive Officer, LUSPA, doing his presentation

She explained that sound land administration and spatial planning were the cornerstone of sustainable urban development, and was able to provide the framework for the provision of public services, equitable access to infrastructure, and the creation of livable cities.

The Executive Director said urban planning environments today are susceptible to corruption and illegitimate gain, and that scarcity of resources like land and housing can also breed opportunities for extortion and unethical practices which need to be tackled alongside other societal challenges, from poverty to pollution to crime.

Mr. Michael Okai, Project Coordinator at GII, and Mr. Chapman Owusu-Sekyere, Acting Deputy Chief Executive Officer of LUSPA, made PowerPoint presentations on ‘Overview of Land and Corruption in Africa II Project’ and ‘Spatial Planning Functions at the District Level in accordance with Act 925 and LI 2384 respectively.

According to Transparency International’s prediction, four out of every five individual on the planet earth will reside in urban areas by 2050 therefore urban planning must become more sustainable to provide adequate public services such as public transportation, waste management, electricity as well as space for public infrastructure, accessible public institutions like schools and hospitals, and recreational facilities such as parks, sports fields and squares.

Otumfuo happy with efforts being made to solve economic crisis

The new Edubiasehene and some of the Business Leaders pose for the camera

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, has commended the government for its pragmatic approach to solve the current disturbing economic climate, while also lauding the numerous stimulus packages implemented to mitigate the plights of distressed companies.

This was contained in a speech read on his behalf by Nana Tuahyia Oduro Panin Birikorang I, New Edubiasehene, at the 20th Ashanti Business and Financial Services Excellence Award and 9th Ashanti Business Leaders Excellence Awards ceremony in Kumasi last week Friday.

Otumfuo bemoaned the collapse of a plethora of enterprises, particularly Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises culminating in the loss of thousands of jobs.

He noted that it was essential that the government initiated numerous palliative financial and other policy measures with a view to alleviating the dismal plights of the distressed companies.

The Asantehene also commended the Ghana Enterprises Agency, formerly National Board for Small Scale Industries (NBSSI), for the critical role it was playing in the successful implementation of the stimulus packages.

He also encouraged the government not to relent in its efforts at tackling the challenges with all the human, technical and financial resources at its disposal, saying it was duty-bound to promote and protect Ghanaian businesses, as well as create and protect jobs for the youth.

The Asantehene also drew the attention of the government to the predicament of Ghana’s once vibrant poultry industry, which, he said, regrettably had been in the state of distress in recent years, adding that Kumasi, which was generally acknowledged as the poultry capital of Ghana, had been beset by precarious condition in which the country’s poultry industry currently found itself.

The Ashanti Overlord, however, noted that it was certainly reassuring that the government recognises the potential of Ghana achieving self-sufficient in poultry production, and expressed appreciation that it had over the years injected substantial capital to the tune of GH¢10 million into the industry to ensure its revival and sustainability.

Otumfuo expressed his delight and support for the government on its ongoing efforts at creating the conducive environment, including financial assistance, by which the poultry industry could strive.

He also extended a cordial invitation to potential investors, both in Ghana and abroad, to channel their investments into the Industry Park to take advantage of the accompanying benefits at the Boankra Inland Port Project that had regrettably been on the drawing board for decades.

Wild accusations emerge concerning Terry Bonchaka’s posthumous works

Terry Bonchaka

The executive producer of the late Terry Bonchaka, Felix Agen-Davieshas made wild allegations that blogger and publicist Reagan Mends has approached Madam Charlotte Adjetey, Terry Bonchaka’s mother, with a request that she provide certain documents to secure a loan for producing unreleased works by the late artiste.

Agen-Davies explained that Mends had approached Madam Charlotte Adjetey shortly after Terry Bonchaka’s passing, asking for her house documents to secure a loan for the production of Terry’s works.

In Agen-Davies’s words “This gentleman, Reagan, actually went to Terry’s mom and asked this poor woman to produce her house indenture with which to go borrow money to produce Terry’s works.”

He also emphasized that this act displayed a level of disrespect toward Madam Charlotte Adjetey and is one of the key reasons for his involvement in this controversy.

Agen-Davies further clarified that Terry Bonchaka and Reagan Mends had only worked together as colleagues, and Mends had no authority over Terry’s works. According to Agen-Davies, the rift between the two escalated, leading to the termination of their contract shortly before Terry Bonchaka’s tragic car accident.

He noted, “The reason why he shouldn’t be involved is that Terry had a manager, Ambrose Derry. Ambrose Derry, incidentally, has returned to Liberia. When he left the scene, that’s when Regan showed up.”

“Terry did not know anything about Reagan until he won the Hiplife competition in Ghana in 2001. A year later, Reagan introduced himself, saying, ‘Do you remember me? I was your schoolmate.’ Now, after the manager left, Reagan began to work with Terry, not as a manager, but more as a collaborator” he added.

Madam Charlotte Adjetey confirmed the loan request when contacted by Hitz FM. She acknowledged, “It’s true. It was Reagan; he said I should bring my house documents so that I can get a loan to promote Terry’s works. When he said that, I did not comply because taking loans from the bank is not something I’m comfortable with.”

Madam Charlotte Adjetey expressed uncertainty about her relationship with Mends, stating, “I don’t know; he’s been saying some things I do not understand. If he is a friend, he knows it; if he is not a friend, he knows it. So, I don’t know.”

Terry Bonchaka, a Hiplife star, tragically lost his life in a car accident after performing at the University of Ghana on the Legon-Accra Road. He was the 2001 winner of Ghana’s Hiplife championship and a former student of Adisadel College.

KK Fosu

Renowned Highlife Artiste, K.K. Fosu, has told his fellow musicians to focus on creating evergreen songs that will stand the test of time rather than following fleeting trends.

Known in private life as Kaakyire Kwame Fosu, K.K. Fosu’s advice is for Artist’s to prioritise artistic quality and timelessness over chasing current trends and fleeting fame in the music industry.

He expressed his belief that many contemporary artists are more focused on gaining popularity and making money, rather than producing quality music that will endure.

He emphasized the importance of distinguishing between evergreen music and commercial music and also suggested that musicians should have a strategic release pattern for their songs, which would contribute to the longevity of their music.

He encouraged artists to incorporate live band performances into their music, as it can help refine their sound and craftsmanship.

“Know the difference between evergreen music and commercial music. In this age I have realized we are doing the music because we’re hungry for fame and money. When you follow trends as a musician you will fade out quickly because when the trend and buzz pass away then you are stuck”

“Songs of Amakye Dede are timeless pieces, they still sound refreshing whenever it’s played. As a musician, you should have a release pattern for dropping songs. Every musician should learn and incorporate the use of a live band, this will help you refine your sound and craft” he ended.
