The Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Alhasan Doguwa, has been re-elected to represent the Doguwa/Tudunwada Federal Constituency of Kano.

The police said the lawmaker was arrested and charged alongside other accomplices. “The lawmaker was charged with criminal conspiracy, culpable homicide, causing grievous hurt, and mischief by fire, inciting disturbance,” the police spokesperson Abdullahi Kiyawa, said.

INEC declares Binani’s winning announcement ‘null and void’

Aisha Dahiru Aisha Binani, candidate of APC

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has said that the announcement made by Yunusa Ari, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Adamawa State, declaring Aisha ‘Binani’ Dahiru winner of the governorship election, is ‘null and void’.

In a brief thread of tweets on Sunday, the electoral umpire through its National Commissioner, Information and Voter Education, Barr. Festus Okoye, said the election process was clearly not concluded before the announcement was made.

Mr Okoye added that the action of the REC is a usurpation of the power of the Returning Officer. “It is null, void and of no effect”.

He consequently stressed that following this action, the collation of results of the supplementary election has now been suspended.

The INEC REC in Adamawa State Yunusa Ari, on Sunday stirred controversy in the state’s governorship election when at about 9am he announced Aisha ‘Binani’ Dahiru, candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), as the winner of the election.

His announcement elicited protests from members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) present at the state collation centre in Yola.

Before the collation exercise was suspended on Saturday night, results from 10 LGAs had been announced — and Binani was trailing Ahmadu Fintiri, the incumbent governor and PDP candidate.

The collation of results from the remaining 10 LGAs was expected to commence by 11am on Sunday, and Mele Lamido, the returning officer for the Adamawa governorship election, was not present when Ari announced Binani as the winner of the election.

According to the constitution, Lamido is the rightful official empowered to declare the winner of the election.

His management came out to dispel the rumours and now a few weeks later, the VGMA 2022 Artist of the Year has returned to social media.

In an Instagram post on Friday, April 14, KiDi reiterated the reason for taking the social media break, while addressing the rumours from what he calls “bad actors.”

Read his full statement below;

A little under two months ago, I made the painful decision of cancelling my tour to take care of my health that included taking time off social media. In that time, I have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love from family, friends, fans and the brands i work with. You all made me feel incredibly loved in this difficult period and i cant appreciate you enough.

Unfortunately, a few badactors took this as an opportunity to spread false stories that got a lot of you very concerned. While i do not want to give it any more attention, i want to categorically address that those stories were false.

I am glad to be back to doing what i love most; creating music and performing for you. Thanks for sticking it out with me.

Love, KiDi

The fishy business of a Chinese factory in The Gambia

0
Fishermen say the factory has upset the market as it buys in bulk and pays lower prices than other buyers

Investment from China welcomed by The Gambia’s government is causing upset for a fishing community who say a Chinese-owned fishmeal factory is disrupting life on their shores.

“I have been working here for 32 years,” says Buba Cary, a fisherman from Gunjur speaking in Mandinka through a translator. “It only brings suffering for us,” he says, gesturing to the white building.

“Before the factory came here there was a lot of fish in the sea. If you want fish [now] you need to cross the border to Senegal or Guinea-Bissau.”

Kelepha Camara, who comes to this shore to buy fish and sell it up country, agrees, arguing that it has pushed up the cost of fish for locals: “This factory is not supporting us.”

These men are talking about a facility run by Golden Lead in the coastal village of Gunjur, which is around 45km (28 miles) south of the capital, Banjul.

In total The Gambia now has three of these factories – the other two, run by different firms, are about 10km north and south of Gunjur, where fish oil and fishmeal are produced and exported to China, Europe and beyond.

For many years the fishmeal industry has raised questions about sustainability. It uses vast quantities of fish, such as sardinella and bonga, which make up at least half of The Gambia’s total protein intake.

The Dutch non-governmental organisation Changing Markets Foundation found that the biggest of these fishmeal factories accounted for 40% of Gambia’s entire fish catch for a year.

‘A new era’: Germany quits nuclear power, closing its final three plants

0
The Emsland nuclear power plant in Lower Saxony, Lingen is one of the final three nuclear power plants in Germany which will close on April 15

Germany’s final three nuclear power plants close their doors on Saturday, marking the end of the country’s nuclear era that has spanned more than six decades.

Nuclear power has long been contentious in Germany.

There are those who want to end reliance on a technology they view as unsustainable, dangerous and a distraction from speeding up renewable energy.

But for others, closing down nuclear plants is short-sighted. They see it as turning off the tap on a reliable source of low-carbon energy at a time when drastic cuts to planet-heating pollution are needed.

Even as these debates rumble on, and despite last-minute calls to keep the plants online amid an energy crisis, the German government has been steadfast.

“The position of the German government is clear: nuclear power is not green. Nor is it sustainable,” Steffi Lemke, Germany’s Federal Minister for the Environment and Consumer Protection and a Green Party member, told CNN.

“We are embarking on a new era of energy production,” she said.

The closure of the three plants – Emsland, Isar 2 and Neckarwestheim – represents the culmination of a plan set in motion more than 20 years ago. But its roots are even older.

In the 1970s, a strong anti-nuclear movement in Germany emerged. Disparate groups came together to protest new power plants, concerned about the risks posed by the technology and, for some, the link to nuclear weapons. The movement gave birth to the Green Party, which is now part of the governing coalition.

Nuclear accidents fueled the opposition: The partial meltdown of the Three Mile Island nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania in 1979 and the 1986 catastrophe at Chernobyl that created a cloud of radioactive waste which reached parts of Germany.

EU rejects Ukraine grain bans by Poland and Hungary

0
Polish farmers have been protesting against the flood of Ukrainian grain, which they say has depressed prices on the local market

The European Commission has rejected bans introduced by Poland and Hungary on Ukrainian grain imports.

The two countries said the measures were necessary to protect their farming sectors from cheap imports.

The ban applies to grains, dairy products, sugar, fruit, vegetables and meats and will be in force until the end of June.

The Commission said it was not up to individual member states to make trade policy.

While the Commission has said that unilateral moves will not be tolerated, it has not yet specified what measures it would take against Poland and Hungary.

“In such challenging times, it is crucial to coordinate and align all decisions within the EU,” its spokesperson said in a statement.

Most Ukrainian grain is exported via the Black Sea, but Russia’s invasion last year disrupted export routes and resulted in large quantities of the grain ending up in central Europe.

A deal with Russia, brokered by the UN and Turkey, allows Ukraine to continue exporting by sea – but Ukraine accuses Russia of slowing the process with over-zealous inspections.

Poland and Hungary announced the move on Saturday. The decision came after complaints from local farmers who said they were being undercut by cheaper Ukrainian grain flooding their markets.

On Sunday, Polish Economic Development and Technology Minister Waldemar Buda clarified that the ban applied to goods in transit as well as those staying in Poland.
