Intensify Continental Trade To Unlock $450bn Afcfta Income -Pres Akufo-Addo

0

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has called on fellow Heads of States and the global business community to focus on unleashing the 450bn United States dollars AfCFTA-driven potential income, that stands to be accrued from continental trade by 2035.

President Akufo-Addo also believes that, a one percent increase in Africa’s share of global trade from two percent to three percent could generate some seventy billion United States dollars of additional income per annum for the continent.

A key step to achieving this, according to the President, is for all within the global community to support the call for a new investment approach that prioritizes mutually reinforcing partnerships between the private sectors across advanced economies and the economies of Africa.

Speaking at this year’s edition of the Africa-Italy summit, on Monday, 29th January 2024, in Rome, Italy, President Akufo-Addo said, in line with the urgency to take the necessary steps towards resiliency as a continent, it is important to avoid “tax-dodging”, which is the illegitimate commercial transactions by multinationals, which account for sixty percent of the US$88 billion of illicit financial flows annually from the continent, and other relationships which inhibit Africa’s development.

With some eighty percent of infrastructural projects in Africa failing at the feasibility and business planning phase, he however noted positively, that with the right reforms and interventions, Africa, according to analysis conducted by the American management consulting firm, Mckinsey & Company, could unlock some US$550 billion of investments annually in infrastructure.

“Before 2020, Africa was attracting increasing foreign direct investment (FDI), although overall FDI inflows remained much lower than in other world regions. Between 2000 and 2019, FDI flows to Africa increased fourfold, with a compound annual growth rate of eight-point-five percent (8.5%). Our biggest challenge is not a scarcity of financing, but a confluence of poor governance, speculative risk perception, and a defective environment for crowding in investors.”

He was confident that with added emphasis placed on creating a de-risked landscape that innovatively crowds in resources from private sources of capital, international financial institutions, and sovereign wealth funds, governments on the continent will have to focus their efforts on delivering transformative investments like infrastructure to boost Africa’s development aspirations.

The African Development Bank says the continent’s infrastructure financing needs will be as much as $170 billion a year by 2025, with an estimated gap of around $100 billion a year.

This is essentially why, with a burgeoning population growing at a rate of 2.5% annually, “it has become even more urgent to provide reliable electricity, affordable and decent housing, improved transportation networks, and accessible health infrastructure.” he emphasised.

Touching on key efforts to engender the delivery of quality economic infrastructure for Africa’s post-COVID-19 recovery, he said, “recent happenings within the global space, particularly the COVID-19 pandemic, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the turmoil in the Middle East, which is threatening to engulf the rest of the world, have increased the need for policymakers on the African continent to achieve a structural transformation that yields inclusive and sustainable growth patterns over the medium to long term.”

Adele announces ‘random’ Munich residency

Adele's residency in Las Vegas runs until November

Adele has announced four concerts in a specially-built stadium in Munich this summer – an idea she described as “a bit random, but still fabulous!”

The shows will take place in an 80,000-capacity open-air venue in the German city on 2, 3, 9 and 10 August.

It will be the first time the singer has performed in mainland Europe since her last tour in 2016.

She said she hadn’t been planning any more shows after her current Las Vegas residency and two London shows in 2022.

But the star said she had been tempted by the offer of “a one off, bespoke pop-up stadium designed around whatever show I want to put on”, which was “pretty much slap bang in the middle of Europe”.

“I couldn’t think of a more wonderful way to spend my summer and end this beautiful phase of my life and career with shows closer to home during such an exciting summer,” she wrote on social media.

She ended her message: “Guten Tag babes x”

Ticket registration is open until 5 February, with the pre-sale due to start on 7 February.

The 35-year-old is due to finish her Las Vegas residency on 15 June. Before that, she performed two sold-out shows at Hyde Park in London in July 2022.

Her Vegas residency launched in November 2022 after it was postponed by nearly a year because, the singer said, it was “not ready”.

Adele is best known for hits such as Easy On Me, Hello, Someone Like You and Rolling in the Deep, and albums named after the age she was when they were recorded – 19, 21, 25 and 30.

Public bathhouse returns to Paris suburb after 20 years

Public bathhouse in Paris

Once considered redundant, public bathhouses are making a return to the suburbs surrounding Paris. Two decades after its last bathhouse closed, the northern suburb of Saint-Denis has opened a new set of municipal showers where anyone can take a wash for free.

Signs advertising “bains-douches” are a familiar sight on the streets of Paris, where public bathhouses sprang up by the dozen in the days before indoor plumbing came as standard.

But these days, the signs are more likely to mark an art school or cultural centre than a functioning washhouse.

Only 17 bathhouses are still in operation in Paris today, while in the banlieues surrounding the French capital, the last such facilities closed years ago.

Now the sprawling suburb of Saint-Denis, on the northern outskirts of Paris, is reversing the trend. The area recently reopened a municipal bathhouse, its first since 2004.

Spain parliament votes against Catalan separatist amnesty bill

Demonstrators hold up a banner reading 'no to amnesty'

Catalan separatist lawmakers have voted against an amnesty bill amid disagreements on its scope between the ruling Socialists and a Catalan separatist party, dealing a blow to the government of Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.

The bill, which was rejected on Tuesday by 179 votes to 171, will return to a parliamentary committee for a debate and could potentially be sent back for another vote in the lower house.

Last year, in exchange for parliamentary support from two small Catalan separatist parties, Sanchez agreed to put forward the bill.

But the Catalan Junts voted against the bill after they failed to reach a last-minute deal with Sanchez’s Socialist Workers’ Party.

The Junts wanted all exceptions related to “terrorism” to be removed from the bill since some of the party’s politicians are currently under investigation by courts over alleged charges. The party pushed for Carles Puigdemont, its former leader, to return home after currently living in Belgium as a fugitive.

The amnesty bill is controversial in Spain, with heavy criticism from conservative and far-right opposition parties.

Ex-Pakistan PM Imran Khan and wife jailed 14yrs for corruption

Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bib

Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi have been jailed for 14 years, the second sentence handed to Pakistan’s former prime minister in two days. The couple were convicted of illegally profiting from state gifts – just a week before a general election in which he is barred from standing.

Khan, who was ousted as PM by his opponents in 2022, is already serving a three-year jail term for corruption. He has said the numerous cases against him are politically motivated.

Wednesday’s court case revolved around accusations over state gifts that he and his wife received while in office, while Tuesday’s case – for which he was sentenced to 10 years – for leaking classified state documents. It is thought the two sentences will run concurrently, although that has not been confirmed.

The court has also ordered the couple to pay a fine of about 1.5 billion rupees (£4.2m; $5.3m).

Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party also said that the sentencing further bans their leader from future political work: he will be disqualified for 10 years from holding public office.

Khan’s lawyers said they would be launching an appeal to Pakistan’s High Court in both cases.

Putin challenger submits bid to run for Russian president

Boris Nadezhdin thanked his supporters as he submitted the signatures

Kremlin challenger Boris Nadezhdin says he has collected enough signatures to stand as a candidate in Russia’s upcoming presidential election.

The former local councillor has become known for his relatively outspoken criticism of Mr Putin and of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The electoral commission must now review his application. If any “irregularities” are found with any of the submitted signatures, the commission can disqualify the candidate altogether. Independent politician Yekaterina Duntsova was disqualified from running in December when the electoral commission said it had found 100 “mistakes” on her form.

Current president Vladimir Putin has already registered as an independent candidate for the election in March, which will almost certainly see him win another six-year term.

Shortly after today’s deadline to hand in the signatures, Mr Nadezhdin posted a photo of himself standing in front of several boxes containing papers bearing the signatures of his supporters.

Thousands of Russians have queued in the cold across the country to add their signature to the list of people supporting his bid.

Houthis threaten more attacks against Western warships

Yemen’s Houthi militia

Yemen’s Houthi militia has stated it plans more attacks on United States and British warships.

The Iran-aligned group’s statement, released on Wednesday, said all US and British warships participating in “aggression” against Yemen are targets. The statement stoked concern over the simmering tensions in the region as well as increased disruption to world trade.

The Houthis, who control the most populous parts of Yemen, have launched drones and missiles at shipping in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden since November 19. The group said the attacks are a response to Israel’s military operations in Gaza.

The US and Britain have struck back at Houthi targets in Yemen as they patrol the Red Sea in a naval coalition that has swapped numerous attacks with the Yemeni group.

In the latest exchange, the Houthis fired missiles at the US warship USS Gravely. On Tuesday night, US Central Command said its forces had shot down an antiship cruise missile.

The Houthi attacks have added a global economic element to the turmoil emanating from the war in Gaza. Several shipping companies have suspended transits through the Red Sea.
