Famous Gospel musician, Cynthia Appiah-Kubi popularly known as Cee, has opened up about the struggles she went through in life which compelled her to consider suicide.

In narrating her story, Cee indicated that she was struggling to make ends meet when she was a child which forced her to sell some food items to raise money for her upkeep and survive in those moments.

“When I went to (TV3) Mentor, I went with Ghana Must Go bag. I had nothing on me. I sold pork meat and ice cream. If I don’t sell that day we won’t eat. So, I was doing that anytime I closed from school and I had to come back home early and prepare food,” she revealed.

Cee, further disclosed that had it not been for God’s grace, she could have been killed by poverty because things were tough for her.

Cee also recounted how her cousins and other people used to mock her about her looks which made her nearly commit suicide to put an end to the ordeal.

“That’s the reason why I don’t want to allow any of my children to stay in Africa. Poverty is a disease. If God doesn’t intervene, it can kill you. Sometimes I have to go to houses to throw trash away and wash people’s bowls to be able to get food to eat.

“There was a man who told me I was very ugly and that day I was hurt and I cried. Even my cousins would tell me I was ugly that’s why men didn’t like me, I wanted to commit suicide. I never knew I could become like this; God had a purpose for my life,” she recounted.

Cee is a gospel musician who gained popularity in Ghana through her exploits in the TV3 Mentor reality show.

China has replaced the head of its securities regulator, as public anger over the meltdown in the stock market grows.

Wu Qing, a banking veteran and most recently the deputy party secretary of Shanghai, was named as chairman and party secretary of the China Securities Regulatory Commission (CSRC), replacing Yi Huiman, who assumed the role in January 2019, according to a state news agency Xinhua report on Wednesday.

Wu, 59, was also the chairman of the Shanghai Stock Exchange, the largest stock exchange in mainland China, between 2016 and 2018. He had previously worked with financial regulators for two decades, including at the CSRC.

Chinese stock markets have stabilised this week but they had a dire 2023 and have been the world’s worst performer this year. By Monday, about $6.1 trillion in market value had been wiped from the Chinese and Hong Kong stock markets since their recent peaks in February 2021.

EU launches legal action against Hungary’s ‘sovereignty’ law

Hungary Prime Minster Viktor Orban

The European Commission has launched legal action against Hungary for its recent enactment of laws on “protecting national sovereignty”.

The European Union executive said on Wednesday that it has sent a formal notice to Budapest informing it that the legislation violates the bloc’s democratic values and fundamental rights. Opponents of Prime Minster Viktor Orban’s authoritarian regime claim the new laws threaten to stifle his political rivals, as well as critical media and civil society.

The Commission has been at loggerheads with Orban for years over Hungary’s rule of law, and more recently over his efforts to block aid to Ukraine. It was widely expected to launch such an infringement procedure after the laws were passed by the Hungarian parliament, dominated by the ruling Fidesz party, in December.

The nationalist Orban insists that the legislation, which clamps down on the foreign funding of political candidates, as well as any body or individual with influence over public discourse, is vital to curb foreign influence.

Political candidates violating the rules on funding will face up to three years in prison.

Sweden shuts down Nord Stream blasts inquiry

Gas leaks from Nord Stream into the Baltic Sea

Sweden’s public prosecutor has closed an inquiry into underwater blasts that tore apart two pipelines carrying Russian gas to Germany after a 16-month investigation.

It is still unknown who blew up Nord Stream 1 and 2 in September 2022.

Prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist said the “primary purpose” had been to find out if Swedes were involved or if Swedish territory had been used.

He concluded that Swedish jurisdiction did not apply.

Swedish intelligence service Sapo said it had shared information it had gathered with other countries.

German and Danish authorities are still investigating the series of explosions that sabotaged three of the four gas lines east of the island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea on 26 September 2022.

Commentators said the German inquiry could benefit from Stockholm’s decision if Sapo had come up with additional information.

Sapo said the decision to shut down the inquiry was taken because it was considered “not possible for the Swedish authorities to pursue the matter further”. The pipelines had been built by Russia’s gas giant Gazprom, although Nord Stream 2 was never used because Germany halted the project days after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Four people were killed in Kyiv and another man died in Mykolaiv

Russian missile and drone strikes targeted cities across Ukraine on Wednesday morning, killing at least five people and wounding dozens more, Ukrainian authorities said.

Four people were killed when a block of flats was hit in Kyiv’s south-western Holosiyivsky district. A man was also killed in the southern city of Mykolaiv, officials said.

The whole country was put under air alert and attacks were reported as far west as Lviv, near the Polish border.

Ukraine’s commander-in-chief Valerii Zaluzhnyi said Russia had fired 64 missiles and drones, of which 44 were intercepted. According to the Ukrainian air force, Russian cruise missiles were detected above the western regions of Lviv, Ternopil and Ivano-Frankivsk.

Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said initially that two people had been killed in “another massive attack against our country”. Further victims were found in the rubble of the 18-floor residential building.

Israel-Gaza war: Hamas responds to ceasefire offer with 135-day truce plan

Hamas responds to ceasefire

Hamas has laid out a series of demands, including exchanging hostages for Palestinian prisoners and rebuilding Gaza, in response to an Israel-backed ceasefire proposal.

The armed group wants a full withdrawal of Israeli forces and an end to the war after three 45-day truce periods. The offer is likely to be unacceptable to Israel’s prime minister, who has called for “total victory” in Gaza.

The question is whether a middle ground can be reached to move the process on.

Hamas’s response is a counteroffer to a ceasefire proposal backed by Israel and the US and mediated by Qatar and Egypt – details of which have not been made public.

The deal would also see deliveries of food and other aid to Gaza increase. By the end of the 135-day pause in fighting, Hamas says negotiations to end the war would have concluded.

The proposal received a tepid response from US President Joe Biden, who called it “a little over the top”.

Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said there was still “a lot of work to be done” to reach a permanent ceasefire, but stressed the importance of reaching a lasting peace.

Two bomb explosions have killed at least 22 people in Pakistan’s Balochistan province on the eve of general elections, officials say. The first blast killed 14 people in front of an independent candidate’s party office in Pishin district.

A second explosion left eight people dead in Qillah Saif Ullah district, about 150km (93 miles) away. Many others were injured in the two blasts.

The election has been marred by violence and claims of poll-rigging.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack in Pishin, a town about 50km from the city of Quetta and 100km south-east of the Afghan border. The provincial authorities said 25 people were also wounded.

Images on social media show cars and motorbikes blown apart by the force of the explosion. It took place outside the election office of a local independent candidate who officials told the BBC was meeting his polling agent at the time.

There have been violent incidents in both Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces in the last week or so in the build-up to Thursday’s vote.
