Inter fight back to secure crucial win at Roma

0
Inter Milan vs Roma

Inter came from behind to beat Roma 4-2 in a thriller to extend their lead at the top of Serie A to seven points and end Daniele De Rossi’s perfect start in the capital.

De Rossi, who succeeded Jose Mourinho on a deal to the end of the season last month, won his first three games as Giallorossi boss, but faced a daunting task against an Inter side unbeaten in Serie A since September.

Francesco Acerbi headed the visitors in front under torrential rain in the capital after 17 minutes, but Roma mustered a superb response as Gianluca Mancini nodded in a free-kick before Stephan El Shaarawy cannoned a finish off both posts and in to nudge them ahead on the brink of half-time.

A determined Nerazzurri side came flying out in the second half, taking four minutes to equalise when Marcus Thuram tucked in a cross before the striker’s pressure forced the unfortunate Angelino into an own goal six minutes later.

Benjamin Pavard clipped the post with a sensational volley and Romelu Lukaku squandered a huge chance one-on-one with Yann Sommer as the goalkeeper pinched the ball off his toes.

Despite a late surge of pressure from the home side, Inter’s league-best defence held on and caught out the high-pressing visitors on the counter as Alessandro Bastoni finished off a three-versus-one breakaway.

Liverpool beat Burnley to go top of the table

Liverpool returned to the top of the table as they got back to winning ways against struggling Burnley in front of a club record league crowd at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp’s side were looking to respond after last weekend’s defeat by Arsenal, and having fallen a point behind Manchester City.

They took the lead through Diogo Jota’s header from a corner which Burnley keeper James Trafford failed to claim.

The Clarets, who have been in the relegation zone for most of the season, levelled before half-time through Dara O’Shea’s superb header before Luis Diaz restored the lead in the 52nd minute.

Burnley had several chances to equalise before Darwin Nunez’s header from Harvey Elliott’s cross sealed the points.

On a tetchy afternoon, both Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and Burnley boss Vincent Kompany were booked by referee Tim Robinson for protesting after decisions went against their teams.

Haaland scores brace as Man City see off Everton

Erling Haaland scores

Erling Haaland scored his first goals since November to help Manchester City see off a determined Everton side and briefly move top of the Premier League.

The Norwegian has had to wait to find the net since his return from the foot injury that sidelined him for most of December and January, but he made up for lost time here.

His first goal was a brilliant first-time finish that gave his side a crucial breakthrough in the second half, and he made sure of the three points when he ran clear to slot past Jordan Pickford late on.

Until then, Everton’s organisation and resilience had frustrated the defending champions, who had not managed a shot on target until Haaland struck with 19 minutes to go.

The visitors failed to clear a corner and the ball fell for Haaland at the back post to smash home a fierce first-time strike that Pickford got a hand to, but could not keep out.

Haaland was not done there, and made the most of the space Everton left pushing for an equaliser when he galloped on to Kevin de Bruyne’s through-ball, held off Jarrad Branthwaite and found the bottom corner of the net.

Arsenal secure biggest win after dismantling West Ham

Arsenal secure biggest win

Arsenal secured their biggest Premier League away win with a ruthless dismantling of West Ham to move back to within two points of leaders Liverpool.

Mikel Arteta’s side stay third but are now behind second-placed Manchester City only on goals scored after wiping out a six-goal deficit on a stunning afternoon at the London Stadium.

It is West Ham’s heaviest home Premier League defeat and joint-heaviest of all time, along with a 8-2 loss against Blackburn in 1963-64.

An extraordinary first half saw the Gunners race into a 4-0 lead, thanks to goals from William Saliba, Gabriel, Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard, leaving the home side stunned.

Saka waltzed through a static Hammers defence to score his second after the break, before Declan Rice made it 6-0 with a rocket of a shot from distance against his former club.

After the jubilation of last weekend’s win over Liverpool, Arsenal produced another statement performance to restate their title credentials.

I Saw Leadership In Bawumia … The first time I met him -Kufuor

The second president of the 4th Republic, John Agyekum Kufuor, has publicly endorsed the candidature of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to become the next President of Ghana.

The Gentle Giant made the endorsement on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 at the Next Chapter Speech delivered by the leader of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Bawumia, in Accra.

Former President Kufuor endorsing Dr. Bawumia to become the next President of Ghana

In a brief remark to set the tone for the Vice President’s address, John Agyekum Kufuor recalled his first encounter with Dr. Bawumia and his impression of the man who is leading NPP today.

“I have always seen him as a man of destiny. When I first saw him in 2002, he was a Research Assistant to the governor of the Bank of Ghana. He delivered a paper at an international conference in London. There was something about his presentation. I was the president of Ghana by then. Till then, I hadn’t even spoken to him before.

“I congratulated him and I don’t know what came into me. Prophetically, I told him to carry on the light and that he would go far…In 2008, Akufo-Addo picked this man again to be his running mate,” Kufuor recounted.

It will be recalled that it was during the tenure of President Kufuor that Dr. Bawumia became Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana in 2006.

According to former President Kufuor, Dr. Bawumia was on a mission determined by destiny and urged Ghanaians to support him.

“…This man is on a mission. A mission determined by destiny. Let’s all support him to continue. Quality leadership is very scarce,” he stated.

VISION

The former president observed that Ghana was at carrefour and needed a visionary leader, which he said was Dr. Bawmia, the presidential candidate of the NPP for the 2024 general elections.

“Ghana has come to a crossroads. It’s not the regular politics we want. We want leadership with vision, even in the complex world I spoke about.

“We should be talking about the nation and not so much about the party. We must get competent people to work with him to bring us out of the challenges we are in now,” he added.

NO DOUBT

Meanwhile, the President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, has said Bawumia as President of Ghana intends to carry everyone along.

According to him, leadership required that the people be carried along in all decisions and accept responsibility when things went wrong sometimes.

I have no doubt Dr. Bawumia intends to carry us along with all his ideas or assets if he wins the presidency,” he wrote on Facebook after the event on Wednesday.

However, the leader of the think tank was just unsure about the Vice President owning up “to the wrongs, which is why I’m asking that he accept the liabilities that will come along. I wish him well.”

Franklin Cudjoe stated that Bawumia’s resolve to build an inclusive society was a significant game-changer.

The Vice President noted that he would build an inclusive society based on a value system that rewards hard work and incorruptible behaviour.

Others would be to enhance business flourishing with simple taxes such as the flat tax and deepen public-private sector partnerships to construct and manage critical infrastructure.

He also mentioned that he would ensure the government’s efficiency by fighting corruption through a tighter procurement process and running a lean government with not more than 50 ministers and deputy ministers.

Franklin Cudjoe, however, had a reservation with the Vice President spending what he said was an hour on the achievements of the current government.

Rather, he expected the Vice President to also acknowledge some of “the grave shortcomings,” as he said he was charting a different path.

‘My Manifesto is coming’

Vice President, NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia

The flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has said the ideas he espoused Wednesday this week are not his manifesto.

According to him, those were just his initial ideas but “the manifesto team for the campaign will come out with a comprehensive manifesto in due course.”

The Presidential Candidate of the NPP, Dr. Bawumia, said this on Wednesday, February 7, 2024 in Accra, when he addressed the nation and outlined his vision for Ghana if he becomes President.

In his address, Dr. Bawumia spoke about the economy, his contributions, his vision, priorities and policies.

CHOICE

Concluding his speech, he observed that the choice Ghanaians face in 2024 is between Vice President Bawumia and former President Mahama.

However, Dr. Bawumia emphasised that, “it is fundamentally a choice between the future and the past.”

Samira Bawumia went for his husband from the dais after his delivery

He told Ghanaians to ask themselves a number of questions before making that choice. He wants the voters to ask themselves if there is someone they can trust to come up with innovative and impactful ideas to transform Ghana.

He said if it was someone with personal integrity who is not corrupt and can be trusted to fight corruption, then the choice, he said clearly, is Dr. Bawumia.

He claimed that if Ghanaians want a leader with a proven record they can trust to create jobs for the youth and take care of the poor, disabled, and vulnerable, then it is him.

NO HONEYMOON

The leader of the NPP said he was eager to serve, work with Ghanaians with honesty and integrity, and be determined to make a positive difference.

“I will not ask for a honeymoon to cool-off and think about what to do with the responsibility you would give me. I am prepared and ready to work if you give me the opportunity,” he asserted.

Dr. Bawumia continued, “You know what I stand for. You know my vision. My vision is all about fulfilling your mission. I believe in the ingenuity of the Ghanaian. Together, we can succeed in building a progressive society of possibilities, enterprise, compassion, open opportunities, and shared prosperity for every Ghanaian, born rich or poor, born in the north or the south, born Christian or Muslim, born girl or boy.”

FOUR-POINT VISION

The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, laid out a four-point vision on agriculture, housing, transportation, and power to help reduce the rising cost of living during his presidency.

On agriculture, Dr. Bawumia’s outlined a comprehensive plan for modern agriculture to ensure precision agriculture and food security.”

He has envisioned a Ghana where food security is attained through the application of technology and irrigation to commercial large-scale farming.

He said his government will also promote the use of agricultural lime to reduce the acidity of the soils, enhance soil fertility, and get more yield from the application of fertilisers.

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

On public transportation, Dr. Bawumia announced that his government intends to promote the use of electric vehicles, which he said will positively impact factors affecting the high cost of public transport in Ghana.

He said his administration will endeavour to reduce the cost of public transport by 30–40% with the adoption of electric vehicles for public transportation.

HOUSING

Under Bawumia’s Housing for All policy as President, his government intends to have a major focus on the provision of public housing in the same manner that Singapore did, he said.

He noted that he will partner with the private sector to build large housing estates without the government having to borrow or spend.

Also, the National Rental Assistance Scheme, he added, will be enhanced to deal with the problem of demands for rent advances of two years and more.

POWER SECTOR REFORM

Dr. Bawumia noted that as part of the effort to reduce the cost of living, “my government will implement policies to have energy self-sufficiency at reduced cost through solar and other renewables with the application of market efficiency to the energy market.”

“We will diversify the generation mix by introducing 2000 MW of solar power and additional wind power through independent power producers to reduce our dependence on oil and gas by the end of my first term in office. This will significantly reduce the cost of electricity.”

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia and Mr. John Dramani Mahama

Egya Eba O, Egya Eba O, Egya Anya Ebadu! After several accusations and innuendoes from critics, including academics known more for sexual episodes with students than pronouncements in the classroom, for allegedly failing to deliver on his vision for the Presidency, Vice-President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia answered his critics on Tuesday, February 6, 2024 with a lecture that would go down well in the annals of the political evolution of Ghana, as one of the most thought-provoking policy statements of a Presidential Candidate in this land of our birth.

While the African Cup of Nations was serving a double bonanza in the semi-finals of AFCON ’23 in La Cote d’Ivoire and drawing the attention of soccer crazy fans to the event in Abidjan and Bouake, Ghana’s Vice-President Dr. Mahamadu Bawumia engaged the political world of Ghana, by outlining his long-awaited vision on how he intends to use 21st century technology to bail this country out of the economic mess in which we find ourselves.

After his main challenger in the 2024 Presidential race and former head of state, John Dramani Mahama, has toured the country making pronouncements on a number of national issues, many Ghanaians waited on the Vice-President to make public his vision and mission statement.

On Tuesday evening, while the Super Eagles of Nigeria took on South Africa’s Bafana Bafana for a place in the finals of the 2023 Afcon, Dr. Bawumia took to the podium at the Kofi Ohene-Konadu Auditorium at the University of Professional Studies, Accra, to outline his vision for the Presidency.

He was received by party faithful who milled the auditorium in their numbers and many others outside the hall and wishing him well. The renowned Economist never disappointed the New Patriotic Party’s Presidential flagbearer defined his vision as a ‘New Chapter’ in local politics.

He spoke on several thematic areas. He lectured the country on how his government intends to cajole the private sector to power various development projects across the country, policies and programmes to reduce the cost of living, and create condition for Housing for all Ghanaians, among others.

He might have ruffled a number of feathers in his own administration by boldly telling Ghanaians that if given power at the December 7 polls, he would abolish the controversial E-Levy. The Vice-President told Ghanaians that he will introduce a new flat tax regime in the country.

What I found challenging is his bold pronouncement to work with only 50 ministers. We have 16 regions. Appointing a minister for each region would eat away 16 of the 50. That would mean only 34 political heads to operate all the ministries in this country. That is why the pronouncement is a bold vision.

In a clear jab at his main rival, Mr. John Dramani Mahama, the come-back kid who is touring the country as the new messiah, Vice-President Bawumia told Ghanaians that he would need no honeymoon. “I am clear on what I want to do as President.”

At a meeting with the leadership of the Trades Union Congress, Mr. Mahama asked for some kind of honeymoon during which period he and his administration would prepare to deliver without hindrance.

Alhaji Bawumia, on the other hand, assured Ghanaians that he has a fair idea of the problems confronting the nation and how to prepare to get things right and would not need any period of honeymoon.

“My administration will provide incentives for the private sector to complement government efforts in the provision of many infrastructure and other services to reduce government and improve maintenance,” he said.

The Programme was dubbed ‘Bawumia Speaks.’  I believe those who planned the Tuesday’s programme wanted the Vice-President to respond to many rhetoric from the camp of the National Democratic Congress, whose flagbearer has had a busy schedule on the campaign trail of late.

So far, the only policy of note, coming from the Mahama campaign is the so-called 24-hour Economy. I must be honest I have not really understood this policy. Quite recently, NDC chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia explained that the 24-hour economy is like a welder who usually work during the day. This time the welder could work in the night because government would provide cheaper electricity tariff during the night as an incentive.

Do I understand this to mean that a carpenter contracted to roof my house could arrive in the night, encouraged by the reduced tariff to undertake the assignment in the night? My thinking is that if Asiedu Nketia’s idea of a 24-hour economy is meaningful, would it not lead to a more expenditure by my carpenter friend, in the sense that he would need extra staff to hold the light while he worked?

I may be wrong, but I get the impression that unless someone properly engages Ghanaians on the 24-hour policy, I would be left with the impression that the Mahama administration may want to cut down on day-light activities apparently to conserve power.

With the hindsight of how Dum-so so devastated this country during the era of the last NDC administration, I am beginning to feel that the new policy is a way of conserving power during the day.

Dr. Bawumai told his audience that the 24-hour economy sold by his rival is not an earth breaking philosophy that has suddenly been unleashed at any point in time. He said there were various aspects of the economy that are already running 24 hours. He mentioned the health sector and security services that were on the 24-hour shifts.

He painted the picture of this country running on a ‘Digital Ghana.’ I have been doing a lot of thinking in the last few months about lessons in the last seven years, as well as my vision and priorities, as I seek to become the President of Ghana. Clearly, the initial conditions as we inherited in 2017 are not the same, as will be in 2025. Therefore, my government will not be pursuing or prioritising the same policies we have done between 2017 and 2024.

He told the nation that his ‘Digital Ghana’ vision aims at applying technology to transform key sectors of the economy; including agriculture, healthcare, education, manufacturing, the financial sector, etc., for a prosperous digital economy.

“I want to build a Ghana where we leverage technology data and systems for inclusive economic growth. I want us to apply digital technology, STEM robotics and artificial intelligence for the transformation of our society.”

Dr. Bawumai also promised a constitutional review under his presidency the ex-gratia and propose ways and means of limiting excessive Presidential powers. The Vice-President also talked about the review of the dual citizenship law which has landed the Member of Parliament for Assin North, Mr. James Gyakye Quayson in court.

Already, the NDC candidate, Mr. John Mahama, has made a number of statements on his vision and mission on the way to the December 7 vote.

He has promised to revamp the national team, the Black Stars by relying mainly on local players, a policy that may not have gone down well with a key member of his kitchen cabinet, Dr. Randy Abbey. The former President has also hinted of empowering individual households to rear chicken in their compounds.

In the next few weeks, this column will analysis on the policy guidelines outlined by these leading contenders to the crown about to be bequeathed to whoever Ghanaians will put their trust in, as we prepare for the Presidential polls in December.

If and when other pretenders to Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s crown at the Jubilee House make their policy statement, this column will examine those policies and make informed pronouncements on them.

The stage is set for the Mahmadu and John encounter. Its John 3:16 vs BMW. In case you are unaware, BMW stand for ‘Bawumia Must Win’. It is an acronym coined by the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP.

Politicians have a way of finding motivation from somewhere.

I shall return!

I am overly excited -GUTA President reacts to Bawmia’s vision for Port

0
President of GUTA, Dr. Joseph Obeng

President of the Ghana Union of Traders’ Associations (GUTA), Dr. Joseph Obeng, has expressed his joy about the speech delivered by Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, which tends to do away with a number of taxes should he get elected as president in the 2024 elections.

Speaking to JoyNews at the end of Dr. Bawumia’s speech, Dr. Obeng could not hide his excitement about what Dr. Bawumia articulated in his speech about traders and importers.

“I am overly excited. This is exactly what I wanted to hear and I heard it. It means that they have been listening to whatever pleas that we have been doing, the communication that we do with you, on TV and all that, are being listened to,” Dr. Obeng said.

“It’s all about adopting compliance as a tool of revenue collection in his administration, and it’s going to simplify the collection system, that’s why he is talking about flat rate and that is even going to make duty payments flat rated, starting with spare parts,” he indicated.

“Why can’t I be excited if this is what, after all these years, we’ve said have been heard of and a bill is going to be adopted, so we are very excited the fact that he said that invigilation should be the thing of the past in his administration, it means that he has also listened to our pleas of the invigilation by VAT and that being in government now, I believe he is talking to GRA to stop that exercise,” he posited.

He also spoke on the proposed five years post-clearance audit highlighted by Vice President Bawumia in his speech and said it would go a long way to help GUTA members in their businesses.

“So what he is saying is that, he is going to expand the tax net, he said that because that’s why he started with the TIN (Tax Identification Number) and that has captured a lot of capable taxpayers who are outside the tax net, that’s what he’s going to use to make taxes affordable so that everybody will pay,” Dr. Obeng stressed in the interview.

When that is done, Dr. Joseph Obeng believes that is going to take away all the leakages in the tax system and this is what they have trumped over and over and over that when the duty is flat, it means nobody is going to take advantage, the Custom Officer or the agent or even the trader because everybody knows that this is the flat rate that everybody will have to pay.

“In case he (Bawumia) wins power and he adopts this, because we know that this is feasible, this is workable, it’s not rocket science, this thing that we said is what other countries have done and are being highly competitive in the market,” he said.

He pointed out that Ghanaian traders, especially, importers, are not competitive because of the numerous bottlenecks in the tax administration at the ports.

“We are very uncompetitive because of the high rate of duties that we pay. He might have recognized that and says that he is going to simplify things for us, he is going to make things flat rated for us, so that affordability and then expand the tax net, this is all that we have been saying all this time, and so it’s very good that a leader should listen to his people, that’s all democracy is about, and I am overly excited,” he told the reporter.

He urged all political parties to emulate the example of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to know the needs of business people and structure their policies around that.

Dr. Joseph Obeng expressed confidence in Dr. Bawumia and believes if he is voted as president, he can and will roll out these important tax reforms at the ports.

Tarkwa MP inspects progress of work on 7Km stretch

0
George Mireku Duker, MP for Tarkwa Nsuaem

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Tarkwa Nsuaem constituency, George Mireku Duker, has inspected progress of work on the Efuanta to Bogoso junction road, which is currently under construction.

Work started on the 7-kilometer stretch last August and is expected to be completed in March 2024. It is believed that when work is finally completed it would help ease traffic on the once traffic laden road.

The road, which hitherto was a single lane, is now being dualised through the effort of the Legislator of the area.

Inspecting progress of work, MP Duker commended the Contractor, Gabriel Couto, for the good work done since the construction begun.

According to the MP, the road quality has been superb, as was expected from contractors.

“We are grateful for the road quality. This is what we expect from a contractor and others must emulate same”.

According to MP Duker, he and the entire Tarkwa community trust in the ability and capability of the contractor to do a good work.

“We know you will deliver an excellent job for the god and safety of the people of Tarkwa,” he said.

He added that government, including himself as a Legislator, has come under strong criticism over the poor state of the stretch. He believed that the construction would be evidence of government’s strong appetite to invest in infrastructural development.

Site Engineer, Samuel Danso, told newsmen that the road would have four lanes. Currently, he said 6-kilometers of the binder has been done, leaving only 1-kilometer stretch from University of Mines to the Pentecost Church.

He said as a result the traffic challenge has improved. Initially, he said pedestrians and vehicles could remain in traffic for fifteen minutes but the situation has improved and pedestrians have come to understand why they would have to endure for work to progress on the stretch.
