Two people arrested for firing at Bollywood star’s home

The Bollywood superstar has appeared in more than 100 films

Police in India have arrested two members of a criminal gang for a gun attack that targeted the home of Bollywood actor Salman Khan.

The superstar, who appears in more than 100 films, had angered the notorious Bishnoi gang by killing two antelopes more than 20 years ago, police say.

The gang belongs to a religious sect that considers the animal sacred.

Mr Khan is unharmed, but this is the latest in a series of threats the actor has received in recent years.

Police in Mumbai said the two men approached on a motorbike early on Sunday morning and fired five rounds at Khan’s apartment in the affluent Bandra neighbourhood before fleeing.

Vicky Gupta, 24, and Sagar Kumar Palak, 21, were arrested near a temple in Kutch district in Gujarat on Monday night.

The actor and several family members were present at home when the attack took place. No one was injured.

The police say the men belong to a criminal organisation formed by now-jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi.

The group had in the past threatened and tried to attack Khan for his alleged killing of the blackbuck antelopes in 1998 while on location in Rajasthan, where he was filming the blockbuster Hum Saath-Saath Hain.

Khan, known for films such as Tiger Zinda Hai, Sultan and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo, was handed a five-year jail term in 2018 for poaching the protected animals, but his sentence was later suspended on appeal.

Bishnoi is currently serving a jail sentence for his involvement in several high-profile murder cases, including the killing of the Indian rapper Sidhu Moose Wala in 2022.

Physically Disabled Society condemns Shatta for mocking Stonebwoy’s disability

Shatta Wale

The Ghana Society of the Physically Disabled (GSPD) has reacted to a viral video where Shatta Wale is seen mocking the disability of his arch rival, Stonebwoy.

The mockery follows Stonebwoy’s decision to boycott the Abeka Salahfest because Shatta Wale was billed on the list of performers at a later date.

In the video, Shatta Wale said “Stonebwoy, a disabled man you want to fight me a strong man, I will kick you.”

Responding to the mockery by Shatta Wale, the GSPD noted that such a “primitive statement should not have come from a high-profile personality like Shata Wale.”

The society described that act as “irresponsible” one and called on Ghanaians to condemn the musician’s behaviour.

GSPD cautioned Shatta Wale and demanded that he should retract and apologise to all persons with disabilities and initiate steps to take down the video from social media.

The society also reminded him that making derogatory remarks about a person’s disability is a punishable offence by law with reference to the Disability Act 715.

“We advise the public to embrace persons with disability and be empathetic towards them. “Disability indeed can be anyone’s lot at any given time,” GSPD added.

Praye Tiatia, wife Selly Galley and their twins

Praye Tiatia, a member of the defunct Praye group has shared a heartbreaking struggle he endured with his wife and actress Selly Galley before the birth of their twins.

Speaking on the recent episode of D-Black’s Unkut show, Praye Tiatia revealed that Selly, his wife had five miscarriages in the past in their quest to nurture a family.

He said the last miscarriage happened when Selly Galley was just 7 months pregnant.

Despite the horrendous challenge, Praye Tiatia is elated that finally the Lord has blessed him with twins.

“We had about five miscarriages. The last one we lost it at seven months. Selly is a strong woman, one of the most unbelievable women I have ever met. The celebration was worth it cos to think of her first time going to America was the first time going to give birth to twins,” Praye Tiatia stated.

The musician also disclosed how he met his wife back in the days at an audition.

“She came with three of her friends from school and I was on the panelist trying to recruit. What caught my attention with Selly was this leadership quality that she has. You know that kind of group when they are walking and there’s one particular girl that everybody wants to talk to her and ask of her opinion so I was like who is this girl, let me pay more attention to her,” he said.

Selly gave birth to twins America in August last year after eight years of marriage. She shared photos of her baby bump, along with a message thanking her fans and well-wishers for their support.

“This is the doing of the LORD, and it’s so marvellous in our sight,” Galley wrote. “I had an incredible time during my pregnancy, and as much as I was keeping it quiet, I still wanted to make memories and capture as much. I’d love to share some of those with you before I introduce you to the FIAWOO TWINS! Our great bundle of joy. Our ‘little’ miracles.”

China’s economy grows 5.3 percent in first quarter

China is investing heavily in infrastructure

China’s economy grew faster than expected in the first three months of the year, a boost for policymakers grappling with a property-sector crisis, weak consumer demand and mounting government debt.

Gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 5.3 percent in the first quarter, data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed on Tuesday, comfortably above forecasts and up from a 5.2 percent expansion in the previous quarter.

By sector, industrial production and agriculture grew by 6.1 percent and 3.8 percent, respectively, while services grew by 5 percent, according to NBS data.

The NBS said in a statement that the economy had made a “good start” under “the strong leadership” of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and President Xi Jinping.

The world’s second-largest economy has struggled to sustain a recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic amid a range of longstanding structural challenges, including a hugely indebted real estate sector and a shrinking population.

Belgian mayor orders closure of radical right conference

Former UK Home Secretary, Suella Braverman speaking at Brussels Conference

Authorities in Brussels have ordered the closure of a radical right conference that was addressed by British politicians including Nigel Farage and Suella Braverman. The order banning the National Conservatism conference from taking place on Tuesday was issued “to guarantee public safety,” according to Emir Kir, the mayor of the Saint-Josse-ten-Noode district in Brussels.

Braverman, who has sought to cultivate a following on the right in Britain and beyond since she was sacked last year as home secretary, took to the stage after police had arrived to execute the order to shut the event down.

She began delivering a speech criticising the European convention of human rights, before claiming later that the “thought police, instructed by the mayor of Brussels” had sought to undermine free speech and debate.

Police entered the building after they were invited in by organisers just as Farage was finishing on stage, before then leaving again and preventing others from coming in.

Israel pledges Iran response, as Western countries urge restraint

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu summoned his war cabinet

The head of Israel’s military has said the country would respond to Iran’s weekend attack as several Western countries urged Israel to avoid an escalation of the conflict in the Middle East.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu summoned his war cabinet for the second time in less than 24 hours on Monday over Iran’s missile and drone attack. Israel’s military Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi said his country would respond but did not provide details.

“This launch of so many missiles, cruise missiles, and drones into Israeli territory will be met with a response,” he said at the Nevatim Airbase in southern Israel.

Iran’s attack – launched in retaliation for an Israeli strike on its embassy compound in Damascus earlier this month – has increased fears of open warfare between Israel and Iran and heightened concerns that violence rooted in Israel’s war on Gaza is spreading further in the region.

French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and United Kingdom Foreign Secretary David Cameron made similar appeals, echoing calls for restraint by Washington and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

Heavy rains in Oman

Heavy rains and flash floods have swept parts of the Gulf region, killing at least 18 people in Oman and causing travel disruption in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). In Oman, the death toll announced on Tuesday included at least nine schoolchildren and their driver whose vehicle was washed away by the floodwaters in Samad A’Shan on Sunday. The National Committee for Emergency Management said rescue teams were still searching for two missing people.

The government gave administrative staff in public and private sectors the day off due to the bad weather conditions in several provinces, while remote work was recommended in other parts of the sultanate. Residents were also urged to evacuate to shelters if they felt they were in danger or asked by authorities to do so.

Police and soldiers were deployed to the hardest-hit province of Ash Sharqiyah North to transport citizens out of flooded areas, according to state media.

UK Muslim student loses prayer ban challenge

Head teacher Katharine Birbalsingh said the ban was a victory for all schools

A Muslim student at a London school has lost a High Court challenge against its ban on prayer rituals. Michaela School in Wembley was taken to court by the girl over the policy, which she argued was discriminatory.

The non-faith state secondary school previously told the High Court that allowing prayer rituals risked “undermining inclusion” among pupils.

The free school’s founder and head teacher Katharine Birbalsingh said the ruling was a “victory for all schools”.

About half the school’s roughly 700 pupils are Muslim, the court previously heard. Students are expected to adhere to strict rules including focusing on teachers extensively during lessons and remaining silent in corridors, as well as observing restrictions on uniforms.

In March 2023, up to 30 students began praying in the school’s yard, using blazers to kneel on, the High Court heard.

The school introduced the ban in the same month due to concerns about a “culture shift” towards “segregation between religious groups and intimidation within the group of Muslim pupils”, the court was told.

Historic Copenhagen stock exchange goes up in flames

Fire engulfed the historic spire which then collapsed

Denmark’s historic old stock exchange building in the centre of Copenhagen has been engulfed by fire. The 17th Century Børsen is one of the city’s oldest buildings and onlookers gasped as its iconic dragon spire collapsed in the flames.

Everyone inside the building was able to leave and people rushed to rescue some of its historic paintings. Culture minister Jakob Engel-Schmidt said 400 years of Danish cultural heritage had gone up in flames.

The building, dating back to 1625, is a stone’s throw from Denmark’s parliament, the Folketing, housed in the old royal palace of Christiansborg castle. Danish media said the nearby square was being evacuated and the main entrance to Christiansborg was closed because of smoke.

The old stock exchange was being renovated and had been shrouded in scaffolding and protective plastic covering. It currently houses the Danish chamber of commerce, which described the scenes on Tuesday morning as a terrible sight.

Local craftsman Henrik Grage told Danish TV that it was a tragic day. “This is our Notre-Dame,” he said, comparing it with the fire that engulfed the roof and spire of the cathedral in the centre of Paris almost exactly five years ago.
