Flooded road after a rainstorm hit Dubai

Chaos ensued in the United Arab Emirates after the country witnessed the heaviest rainfall in 75 years, with some areas recording more than 250 mm (around 10 inches) of precipitation in fewer than 24 hours, the state’s media office said in a statement Wednesday.

The rainfall, which flooded streets, uprooted palm trees and shattered building facades, has never been seen in the Middle Eastern nation since records began in 1949. In the popular tourist destination Dubai, flights were canceled, traffic came to a halt and schools closed.

One-hundred millimeters (nearly 4 inches) of rain fell over the course of just 12 hours on Tuesday, according to weather observations at the airport – around what Dubai usually records in an entire year, according to United Nations data.

The rain fell so heavily and so quickly that some motorists were forced to abandon their vehicles as the floodwater rose and roads turned into rivers.

The weather conditions were associated with a larger storm system traversing the Arabian Peninsula and moving across the Gulf of Oman.

Georgia Lawmakers brawl as parliament considers controversial bill

Georgia Lawmakers brawl

Lawmakers in Georgia have come to blows inside parliament as ruling party legislators appeared likely to advance a bill on “foreign agents” that has been criticised by Western countries and has caused protests at home as “pro-Russia”.

Footage broadcast on Georgian television showed Mamuka Mdinaradze, leader of the ruling Georgian Dream party’s parliamentary faction and a driving force behind the bill, being punched in the face on Monday by opposition MP Aleko Elisashvili while speaking before the legislative body.

Tensions in parliament have bubbled up in recent years as the ruling party and the opposition have debated whether to deepen relations with the West or reconnect the former Soviet republic with Russia.

Russia is widely unpopular in Georgia due to Moscow’s support of the breakaway Georgian regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia. Russia also defeated Georgia in a short war in 2008.

The incident on Monday prompted a wider brawl between several lawmakers, an occasional occurrence in the often raucous Georgian Parliament.

Pakistan blocks social media platform X over ‘national security’

Social media platform X

Pakistan blocked access to social media platform X around the time of elections in February, the interior ministry said, citing national security concerns.

Users had reported problems using the platform, formerly known as Twitter, since mid-February, when jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party called for protests against a government official’s admission of vote manipulation.

At the time, both the government and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), the state regulatory body, refused to comment on the outages that were also widely reported by internet watchdog groups.

On Wednesday, the Ministry of Interior mentioned the shutdown in a written court submission.

“The decision to impose a ban on Twitter/X in Pakistan was made in the interest of upholding national security, maintaining public order, and preserving the integrity of our nation,” the ministry said, according to the report submitted to the Islamabad High Court in a challenge to the shutdown.

A High Court on Wednesday ordered the government to restore the platform within one week, citing lawyer Moiz Jaaferi, who launched a separate challenge against the ban.

MPs back smoking ban for those born after 2009

Smoking ban

MPs have backed a plan to ban anyone born after 2009 from buying cigarettes, effectively ensuring it will become law. The measures, championed by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, survived despite opposition from several leading Tory figures – including two ex-PMs. Health Secretary Victoria Atkins told MPs “there is no liberty in addiction” as she defended the plans.

The Tobacco and Vapes Bill passed by 383 votes to 67. If they become law, the UK’s smoking laws will be among the strictest in the world.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Ms Atkins said the plan would create a “smoke free generation”.

However, several Tory MPs, including former prime minister Liz Truss, voted against the bill, arguing it would limit personal freedom.

Last week, ex-prime minster Boris Johnson called the smoking ban “absolutely nuts” during a speech at a Conservative conference in Ottawa, Canada.

Israel would “make its own decisions” over how to respond to Iran               -Netanyahu

UK Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron held talks with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

Benjamin Netanyahu has told UK Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron that Israel would “make its own decisions” over how to respond to an Iranian attack.

He said his government would “do everything necessary to defend itself” during talks the British government had hoped would help prevent escalation.

Mr Netanyahu has repeatedly vowed to retaliate to the unprecedented missile and drone assault at the weekend.

Lord Cameron told him any response should be “smart” and limited.

Speaking to reporters in Jerusalem after the meeting with Mr Netanyahu, Lord Cameron said he was there to “demonstrate our solidarity” after Iran’s “appalling” attack. He continued: “We hope that anything Israel does is as limited and as targeted and as smart as possible.

After the meeting, the Israeli prime minister said: “I want to make it clear – we will make our own decisions, and the State of Israel will do everything necessary to defend itself.”

Mr Netanyahu’s remarks will reinforce the belief in western capitals that Israel is set to take action against Iran and there is a limit to how often they can call for restraint.

Israel is more than aware of concerns in Europe and the United States about the war escalating in the region.

A Russian missile attack has killed 14 people in the city of Chernihiv in northern Ukraine, according to Ukrainian officials.

Ukraine’s interior minister said there were more than 60 injured in the attack, which hit an eight-storey building in a densely populated area.

Three missiles had struck close to the centre of the city, officials said.

The attack came hours after reports of a Ukrainian strike on a Russian military airfield in occupied Crimea.

Details have yet to be confirmed, although local social media channels shared video of an apparent fire on the airfield at Dzhankoy in northern Crimea.

In Chernihiv, acting mayor Oleksandr Lomako said one building had suffered a direct hit from one of the Russian missiles and several floors had been damaged.

The presidential office in Kyiv said another four high-rise buildings, a hospital, dozens of cars and a higher education institution were all damaged in the attack. Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said that two children were among the casualties, and police were searching the rubble for further victims.
