Russian troops seize two villages in Ukraine

Russian seize two villages near Avdiivka

Russian troops have advanced near the Ukrainian city of Avdiivka and seized two villages, but Ukrainian security officials said although the situation in the east of the country was “very difficult” it was “not critical or catastrophic”.

Russian units have expanded a narrow corridor around the rural settlement of Ocheretyne, captured a week ago. They overran neighbouring hamlets – Solovyove and Novokalynove – and pushed forward to the west.

Ukraine’s eastern command said its forces controlled two-thirds of Ocheretyne, where there was fierce fighting.

Russia seized Avdiivka in February after Ukrainian troops withdrew. Moscow’s forces have been moving forward ever since. North-west of Avdiivka, Russian combat units have come within about 18 miles (30km) of the city of Pokrovsk, a Ukrainian military hub. Farther north, they are assaulting the town of Chasiv Yar, near Bakhmut, using airdropped glide bombs to pound Ukrainian positions.

My parents divorce affected me -Shatta Wale

Shatta Wale with father

Ghanaian dancehall artist Shatta Wale, recently opened up about a deeply personal aspect of his life the trauma he experienced due to his parents’ separation.

In a candid online post, Shatta Wale revealed how his parents’ split impacted him emotionally and mentally. He expressed that witnessing the dissolution of his parents’ marriage at a young age left a lasting mark on him, causing significant trauma that he carried into his adult life.

He reflected on the challenges he faced growing up in a broken home, highlighting the emotional turmoil and instability it brought into his life. He emphasized how the absence of a stable family environment affected his sense of security and identity during his formative years.

Shatta Wale and mother

Shatta Wale shared how he struggled to cope with the emotional fallout of his parent’s separation, often feeling lost and vulnerable as a result. He revealed that the experience left him with deep-seated emotional scars that impacted his relationships and personal well-being.

He recalled being consistently branded as a disrespectful son whenever he voiced concerns about his parents’ behavior. This, he explained, led him to leave home in search of peace, ultimately leaving him homeless for a period.

“Growing up, I lived with my parents for a while but they did not help me. They made a mistake and broke up. They created a broken home; our home was broken and it affected me so much. Our broken home affected me. Anytime I talked or complained about this, they labeled me disrespectful. So, I left them. I left the house. I run from my parents.

“You know what my parents put me through? Because of them, I slept on the streets, I slept in front of stores. Those days, it was the prostitutes at Nkrumah Circle who were watching over me. I slept at filling stations at Circle including the one that got burnt. I slept on the streets of Adabraka and so on,”

Shatta Wale revealed that as a result, he developed a coping mechanism of isolating himself from others. He explained that, much like his previous experience with his parents, he still doesn’t hesitate to distance himself from anyone who brings him trouble.

Iraq criminalises same-sex relationships with maximum 15yrs in prison

Iraq parliament

Iraq’s parliament has passed a law criminalising same-sex relationships with a maximum 15-year prison sentence, in a move it said aimed to uphold religious values, but was condemned by rights advocates as the latest attack on the LGBTQ community in Iraq.

The law adopted on Saturday aims to “protect Iraqi society from moral depravity and the calls for homosexuality that have overtaken the world,” according to a copy of the law seen by the Reuters news agency.

It was backed mainly by conservative Shia Muslim parties who form the largest coalition in Iraq’s parliament.

The Law on Combating Prostitution and Homosexuality bans same-sex relations with at least 10 years and a maximum of 15 years in prison, and mandates at least seven years in prison for anybody who promotes homosexuality or prostitution.

The amended law makes “biological sex change based on personal desire and inclination” a crime and punishes transgender people and doctors who perform gender-affirming surgery with up to three years in prison.

The bill had initially included the death penalty for same-sex acts but was amended before being passed after strong opposition from the United States and European nations.

Bangladesh reopens schools as heatwave alert extended by 3 days

Students refill their bottles to hydrate on a hot summer day

Millions of students have returned to their schools across Bangladesh despite a heatwave that prompted a nationwide classroom shutdown last weekend.

The reopening of schools on Sunday came as the authorities issued another heatwave alert for three more days as the South Asian country faces its longest heatwave in 75 years.

The heatwave reached a 29th day on Sunday, the longest since the government started keeping records in 1948, said meteorologist Shaheenul Islam.

The season’s highest temperature at 42.7 degrees Celsius was recorded in the southwestern district of Chuadanga on Friday.

Capital Dhaka’s maximum temperature was 38.2 degrees that day, according to the meteorological data. The average maximum temperatures in Dhaka over the past week have been 4-5 degrees Celsius (7.2-9 degrees Fahrenheit) higher than the 30-year average for the same period.

Extensive scientific research has found climate change is causing heatwaves to become longer, more frequent and more intense.

Classes resumed on Sunday with anxious relatives accompanying their children to school gates for the start of classes in Bangladesh, which follows the Sunday-Thursday Islamic work week.

Sergei Karelin was reportedly arrested on Friday

Russia has reportedly arrested two journalists who have been working with international news outlets. Sergei Karelin – a Russian and Israeli citizen – was detained on Friday, the Associated Press reported. He has previously worked with the news agency. He is accused of “extremism” in connection with alleged work for the late opposition leader Alexei Navalny’s foundation – charges he denies.

A day earlier, Konstantin Gabov was detained on similar charges. Mr Gabov has worked with outlets including Reuters.

Both men face a minimum of two years in prison if convicted of alleged “participation in an extremist organisation”. They are the latest journalists to face charges amid heightened repression in Russia, which has seen freedom of the press severely limited.

“The Associated Press is very concerned by the detention of Russian video journalist Sergey Karelin,” the US press agency said in a statement.

Burkina Faso rejects accusations that soldiers massacred 223 villagers

A military convoy with over 100 soldiers descended on the villages

Burkina Faso has rejected “baseless accusations” that soldiers massacred 223 people in attacks in February. A Human Rights Watch report alleged the army killed 179 people in Soro village and 44 others in Nondin, at least 56 of who were children, on 25 February.

The NGO said this was “among the worst army abuse” incidents in the country in nearly a decade.

Burkinabè authorities said they had opened a legal inquiry to “establish the facts” and condemned HRW’s report. The minister also expressed his surprise that “while this inquiry is under way to establish the facts and identify the authors, HRW has been able, with boundless imagination, to identify ‘the guilty’ and pronounce its verdict”.

Earlier this week, officials in the military-ruled country suspended the BBC and US public broadcaster Voice of America over their coverage of the HRW report. In a statement released on Thursday, HRW said the alleged mass killings “appear to be part of a widespread military campaign against civilians accused of collaborating with Islamist armed groups, and may amount to crimes against humanity”.

Palestinian leader appeals to US to stop Israel’s Rafah offensive

0
More than half of Gaza's population has been displaced to Rafah

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas says the US is the only country that can stop Israel from attacking Rafah, the southern Gaza city where more than a million people are taking refuge.

Mr Abbas, who runs parts of the occupied West Bank, said any attack could see Palestinians flee Gaza. On Saturday Israel’s foreign minister said Israel could suspend the incursion if there was a hostage deal. Long-running talks mediated by Egypt and Qatar have largely stalled because of the gaps between the Israeli and Hamas positions, but on Sunday Hamas said it would send representatives to Cairo to give a response to the latest proposal.

Hamas wants a permanent end to the war and withdrawal of all Israeli troops from Gaza, while Israel insists Hamas must be destroyed in Gaza and all hostages freed.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in the Saudi capital Riyadh, Mr Abbas – whose Palestinian Authority is not present in Gaza, which has been under Hamas rule since 2007 – urged the US to intervene. “What will happen in the coming few days is what Israel will do with attacking Rafah because all the Palestinians from Gaza are gathered there,” he said.

He added that only a “small strike” on Rafah would force the Palestinian population to flee the Gaza strip.

KON commissions GIS staff quarters @ JAK Estates

The minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, addressing the media at Dedesua.

The Minister for Works and Housing, Mr Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has commissioned 26 housing units for the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) at Apatrapa, in the Atwima Nwabiagya North district of the Ashanti region.

The Chief Executive of the State Housing Company Ltd., Mr Kwabena Ampofo Appiah, addressing the gathering.

The SHC is building 100 housing units and has so far competed seventy of them. Out of the 70 that has been completed, the GIS has purchased 26 of them

Addressing a gathering before commissioning the project, Oppong Nkrumah indicated that the SHC and GIS collaboration formed part of government’s quest to improve accommodation within the security sector and beyond.

In view of the above, he disclosed that government had embarked on interventions aimed at   improving accommodation of security agencies.

“The government of Ghana, under Akufo Addo, has also got a government developing a programme which is specifically accommodation for security agencies and other public servants,” he said.

He named Kwabenya,Tesano- all suburbs in Accra – as some of the areas where similar houses would be built.

On Ghana’s housing deficit, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah disclosed that 1.8 million Ghanaians have no decent accommodation.

“Today in Ghana, we need 1.8 million homes or housing units for the average household of four. What this means is that 1.8 million times four of our people do not have dignified housing.”

The Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, presenting a symbolic key to the GIS

The repercussions, according to him, are that “land lords and real estate agents take our people for granted”.

On the basis of this, Oppong Nkrumah said President Akufo Addo had instructed his ministry to develop incentives free work that attracts the private sector to come in as master developer and develop the new settlements in the cities with 5,000 homes.

“Today, at the Works and Housing ministry, we are in the process of consulting with stakeholders to complete this incentive package and bring it before cabinet and parliament for approval and use that to stimulate the quick development of housing units to reduce our 1.8-housing deficit in Ghana in the next ten years”, he said.

Decentralising the housing project, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah revealed that government was about to start district housing programme.

“Additionally, we are about to start a district housing programme, which will ensure that across the 261 districts, in our country and using local building materials so that the final products are very affordable.

“We are able to deliver more houses, particularly to public servants who are posted to rural areas to serve the republic of Ghana, but also to make same available for persons who are working elsewhere, hailing from these places and would want to purchase a house instead of struggling to build one as well.”

On his part, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for State Housing Cooperation Ltd. (SHC), Nana Kwabena Appiah, indicated that 26 units of residential accommodation is being given to the GIS.

According to him, the project, it was the third of such project that had been handed over to the GIS and mentioned other places as Sunyani,SewfiWioso and Kumasi.

One of the houses decorated for commissioning.

Nana Kwabena Appiah noted that the project is also the eighth mass estate being constructed by the Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo and Dr.Bawumia administration.

The project, he continued, is aimed at developing over one hundred housing units of two, three and four bedrooms’ homes, adding that it is the testament of the hard work of the staff and the board of SHC.

The Comptroller-General of Ghana Immigration Service, Mr. Kwame Asuah Takyi, noted that GIS had had a harmonious relationship with SHC, which had led to Apatrapa housing project.

“I must say the service has a good working relationship with the state housing company, under the able leadership of Mr. Kwabena Ampofo Appiah from the year 2017 and this collaborative effort was part of the measures instituted by the service with the blessing of the government.”

Whilst he called on government to improve the state of GIS regional offices, Asuah Takyi revealed that since 2017 to date, the GIS had seen significant developments under this government.

“Between 2017 to the first quarter of 2024, the current management has witnessed phenomenal infrastructure development. Mention could be made of the centre of excellence at South Odorkor in the Greater Accra region, which is for post entry levels of training of officers”.

The GIS boss also revealed the establishment of Mid-country training school at Tepa, establishment of tactical training school at Kyebi.

Acquisition of 26 housing-units of two and three bedroom houses at John Agyekum Kufour Estate at Apatrapa,“which we are witnessing today”

The Chairman of the occasion, Nana Agyekum Kusi Ababio, the Chief of Oyoko, expressed appreciation to Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and president Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo for the realisation of the project.

Kusi Ababio hailed Nana Kwabena Appiah, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for State Housing Cooperation Ltd. (SHC), for turning the SHC to become a befitting entity.

He expressed the optimism that with service men coming to live in the area, it will ward off miscreants from the neighbourhood.

KON later inspected the Bantama,Bohyen drainage systems before he paid a courtesy call on Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

He went to Dedesua to inspect parcel of lands His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has gifted to the SHC to build residential accommodation.

FEATURE: The Politics of Tema-Mpakadan Railway Project

0
Feature

Tema, is a well-known city in Ghana. But Mpakadan? It was only recently that the name of this community hit the headlines. And it was all about railway. This small community along the Volta Lake, hosts Tropo Farms, a major stakeholder in the fish-farming sector. Now, it could soon be a big town and a major inland port, linking the North East to the South.

This visionary idea of H.E. Nana Akufo-Addo, to extend the railway from Akosombo to Mpakadan cannot be ignored by well-meaning Ghanaians, because now it will be possible to extend the railway on the Eastern corridor, from Mpakadan, to Hohoe, and through to Jasikan, Dambai, Nkwanta, Bimbilla, Zabzugu, Yendi, Nalerigu, Zebilla and into Burkina Faso, as planned.

Talking about well-meaning Ghanaians, I do not think I will be condemned, if I leave out Sammy Adu Gyamfi, the National Communication Officer of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), for his show of green-envy displayed in his article, Tema-Mpakadan Railway Project: A railway line to nowhere published on Friday, April 19, 2024.

Let me address just four points in his article, namely points, 3, 6, 7 and 10 (I), before I proceed.

In Point 3., Sammy reminded us that the previous NDC government under H.E. John Mahama, in November 2016, secured funding of $398 million from Exim Bank of India for the design and construction of an 84 km railway from Tema to the Lake Volta port of Akosombo. For evidence, he referred readers to (https://www.railway-technology.com/news/newsexim-bank-grants-39833m-for-84km-tema-akosombo-railway-line-5682397/). In truth, the distance is 84.83 km, so an NDC constructed railway will be short 830 meters to the Akosombo port, and this could get almost $3.9 million into private pockets.

What is mind-boggling is that, the picture in the reference above, showed the then Finance Minister Seth Tekper shaking hands with a white guy, who does not look like he is an Indian, while someone looking like his deputy, Mona Quartey, was looking on.Thecare-taker transport minister, or the deputy or the chief director, was completely missing here. So, does it mean that the transport ministry had no hand in that transaction or that picture and story are fake? This is NDC for you.

In point 6., Sammy Gyamfi again reminded us that the current Nana Addo administration, secured an additional loan of $48 million to extend the original 84.83 km railway by 12.77 km from Akosombo to Mpakadan. This is where I noticed some inconsistencies.

The first section of the railway was to go on land from Tema to Akosombo, a distance of 84.83 km and it cost us $398.33 million, at $4,695,626.55 per kilometer. The Nana Addo administration secured an additional loan of $48 million for an additional 12.77 km of railway, which will include construction of a 300-meter bridge.

This is where I get confused. If there was no need for a bridge, it will be obvious that the Nana Addo administration would have secured a loan much less than $48 million. But this is not the main issue here. Nana Addo’s loan cost us $3,758,809.71 per kilometer.

Meaning, if H.E. Nana Addo had secured the loan for the 97.6 km, he would have secured $366,859,827.72 or let us just round it off to $367 million. That will mean, a saving of $31 million.

It is even more frightening if the project actually cost $3,758,809.71 per kilometer, then the Tema-Akosombo railroad should have cost us, $318,859,827.72 or $319 million.  This will mean some $79 million found its way somewhere into private pockets and accounts of NDC persons.

In point 7., Sammy Gyamfi reminds us that Mpakadan has no port. This we know. That does not mean that a port cannot be built there. Because that was planned to happen.

Sammy Gyamfi and the NDC should know that the Tema-Mpakadan project is part of a multi-modal transportation network designed, during the J.A Kufuor administration to improve connectivity between Tema Port and the country’s northern regions.

It is a component of the first phase of the 1,000km Ghana-Burkina Faso Railway Interconnectivity Project, which will build a railway line between the Port of Tema in Ghana and Ouagadougou, the capital city of Burkina Faso. This can only come from a truly visionary leader, like J.A. Kufuor, who knows that many lake ports will cut down on cost of goods.

By the way, there is a port in Akosombo, so in what way will rail service being extended to Mpakadan, hinder port services in the former? I do not get it.

And in point 10 (I)., Sammy Gyamfi took the opportunity to do what the NDC and all socialists know best, propagating lies over and over again for it to be accepted as the truth. Who ever told him that the Tema-Akosombo railway project is a legacy of the Mahama led NDC government?

The Tema-Mpakadan railway project, formerly known as the Tema-Akosombo rail project, was proposed as a ‘port-to-port project’ in 2007, by visionary, President J. A. Kufuor.

In 2007, a feasibility study for a multi-modal transit system between Tema and Buipe via Akosombo was commissioned. The Parliament of Ghana approved the Tema-Akosombo railway project, nine years later, in November 2016, and seven years after the NDC came to power.

The project agreement was reviewed under H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s government. The review was ordered due to the potential impact on the Akosombo dam caused by drilling a tunnel through rock to the Akosombo Port.

Other factors that prompted the review included security concerns and a lack of adequate economic activity near the train terminal at the Akosombo port.

The project scope was changed following the review and the route length was increased from 84.83km to 97.6km. The revised scope included the construction of a rail bridge over the Volta River.(Ref: https://www.railway-technology.com/projects/tema-mpakadan-railway-project-ghana/?cf-view)

It must be noted that there was a vibrant railway ministry with a sector minister in charge during the NPP Kufuor administration, which intended to revive and extend rail transport across the country. The NDC came in 2009 and collapsed the ministry and it was not until sevenyears later that it started pretending that it had railway in mind. The NDC has no vision for rail transport in Ghana.

And to state that the railway to Mpakadan is to nowhere, means the NDC does not recognise or consider people living in all communities after Akosombo to Mpakadan and beyond, as worthy people. This is a political suicide for the largest opposition party.

Now, on the current issue which is all about the crash of the train on test run on the Tema-Mpakadan railroad.

To begin with, when the rail tracks were being laid, there were cases of some miscreants in these NDC strongholds, stealing some of the rails, converting them into scraps and selling them. I do not think I remember the NDC condemning such nation wrecking acts. Could it be that some powers from the opposition encouraged these miscreants?

Clearly, some people simply do not want any development in their communities and yet these same people will come shouting that the government has neglected them.

The government had to spend extra money to make sure the tracks were laid.

Then, on the day set aside to test run the new engines, someone decided to use a truck to convey blocks from one side of the rail tracks to the other, by first using the authorised route by way of going under the bridge. But, on his return, he decided to unlawfully use an unauthorised route. That was to go over the rail tracks at an area not marked for vehicles to travel across. Obviously, he got stuck in the middle.

There are some major things that any driver will make sure are in place before using any vehicle. They are, the vehicle’s road worthiness, enough fuel, good spare tyre, jack and wheel spanner, among others.

Unfortunately, this driver claimed he moved the vehicle knowing well that the jack was not in it. So, when he got stuck, he did not call for help but left the vehicle and went home to pick the jack. This is very nauseating.

Obviously, this driver deliberately left the jack behind and pretended to go for it, in order to stay out of harm’s way when the anticipated clash happened.

So, the vehicle was on the rail tracks in a bend, when the new train engine suddenly came by.There was no way the train engineer could have applied brakes, with the obstacle suddenly appearing, only a few meters away. At a moderate speed, a train will need at least 1.6 km, to come to a halt.

If this act was not deliberate then I do not know, what it was. Firstly, we heard some people speaking in the background during an interview that no one should blame the driver. Others were saying the rail tracks have made it impossible for them to go about their normal businesses. And someone also told me that some people poured out heaps of gravels on the tracks to make it impossible for the train to run.

Then,on, Friday April 19. 2024, the day after, the crash, the NDC came out, and made a statement on the Tema-Mpakadan railway, without ever mentioning what happened the day before to even state its position on it. It rather attributed the railway project to its vision and adding that Mpakadan is not worthy of mentioning because it does not exist.

The NDC later came out and chose to blame the Railway Authority for the accident, insisting, it did not do any pre-inspection of the tracks before the train took off to embark on the test run. The Railway Authority debunked this lie and emphatically said that was done.

After trying very hard to obstruct the construction of the railroad by stealing some of the tracks, but failing in the process, these lawless people, perhaps under instigations from politicians they believe in, decided to create this accident, in order to make rail travel look dangerous and unattractive.

This is the politics of Tema-Mpakadan railway system.
