Ghanaian broadcaster and fashion designer, Kofi Okyere Darko also known as KOD, has endorsed the candidacy of the National Democratic Congress flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama.

According to him, John Mahama is the breath of fresh air Ghanaians yearn for.

“Today, I stand in front of you as Ghanaians with the strong conviction that we need that change that we have been yearning for, and that is why I stand today to endorse His Excellency John Dramani Mahama as the next President of the Republic of Ghana.”

He made these comments at the NDC 2024 official campaign launch in Tamale on July 27.

KOD said Mahama is a visionary leader and the one the country needs to take Ghana to the next level.

The fashion designer said Mahama’s policies are laudable and a true demonstration of the change and solutions to Ghana’s problems.

He rallied the support of the youth to vote for Mr Mahama because everyone is deeply burdened.

In September 2023, KOD revealed that he would vote for the NDC during the 2024 general election.

Earlier, the media personality said that he had always supported the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during its campaigns in 2007 and 2015 before the general elections of both years.

However, he said the NPP failed to keep their promises.

Actress Martha Ankomah’s defamation case against KumawoodActor Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as Lil Win, will be heard on July 31.

This follows the completion of the Case Management Conference on July 25, overseen by Justice Forson Agyapong Baah at the High Court in Accra.

Ankomah is seeking several forms of relief in her lawsuit, including:

GH¢5 million in damages for defamation.

Compensatory damages for harm to her reputation.

Aggravated damages for the malicious nature of the statements.

An apology and retraction of the defamatory words.

An injunction preventing Lil Win from making further defamatory statements.

The Father of the reigning TGMA Artiste of The Year, Stonebwoy, has made an astonishing revelation that he used the date of birth of the Dancehall star and his late twin brother to stake lotto when they were born.

Stonebwoy graduated with Second Class Upper in Public Administration from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA) on Friday, July 26, 2024.

Speaking at the private party to celebrate Stonebwoy’s graduation at the African Regent Hotel, Mr Etse Satekla revealed astonishingly that he knew the music star was born to be great when he won a huge amount from staking the lotto.

According to him, he became liberated after using the money he won from the lottery to take care of all the traditional ceremonies required for twins.

“This my son, they were two. In fact, Etse was born to be a lucky man. When he was born, I was in the world, I wasn’t for Christ. I used his birthdate to buy Lotto, and I won, that is what I used to perform all the activities about twins and I was free.”

The Private Party was attended by celebrities including Nadia Buary, Bola Ray, Keche, John Dumelo, Gloria Sarfo and Criss Waddle.

ANC expels ex-president Zuma for backing rival party

Zuma, former leader of the ANC

Former South African President Jacob Zuma has been expelled from the ruling African National Congress (ANC) after he backed a rival party in May’s parliamentary election that saw the ANC lose the majority, the party said on Monday.

“Zuma has actively impugned the integrity of the ANC and campaigned to dislodge the ANC from power, while claiming that he had not severed his membership,” ANC Secretary General Fikile Mbalula told the media.

“This conduct is irreconcilable with the spirit of organisational discipline and letter of the ANC Constitution.”

Zuma, who once led the ANC, was suspended from the party in January after announcing he would support the new uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) in the general election. He later became the leader and face of MK.

MK did better than expected in the poll and won about 15 percent of the vote, a major factor in the ANC’s loss of its majority for the first time since the apartheid era.

The ANC won 40.18 percent of the vote in the election, down from the 57.50 percent it garnered in 2019, forcing it into a coalition government for the first time since it took power at the end of white minority rule in 1994. MK is now the official opposition.

MK responded to media reports that Zuma had been expelled in a statement earlier on Monday, criticising the ANC’s process and condemning “grave injustices” against Zuma.

“President Zuma will engage his legal team to urgently determine the course of action,” it said.

Man arrested over suspected French railway vandalism

Teams worked around the clock to fix the damage caused by arson attacks

An “ultra-left militant” was arrested in north-west France on Sunday after being found behaving suspiciously near a railway site, according to police sources quoted by French media.

Officers who searched the man’s car found keys to technical premises, pliers, a set of universal keys and literature “linked to the ultra-left”.

The 28-year-old suspect is currently being questioned by police in the city of Rouen, French media said.

There is no indication that the man has links with the people responsible for Friday’s suspected co-ordinated arson attack on railway lines ahead of the opening ceremony for the Paris Olympic Games.

The acts of sabotage paralysed high-speed TGV lines running to and from Paris and heavily disrupted travel in France.

On Monday morning, France’s Minister of the Interior Gerald Darmanin said that a “number of profiles of people who could have committed these very deliberate, very targeted acts of sabotage” had been identified.

He added that the methods employed were “traditional” of the ultra-left and said there was “likely a political claim” behind the sabotage.

“The question is whether they were manipulated or is it for their own account,” Mr Darmanin said, adding that investigators were making good progress and would find those responsible.

Alongside the damage to the train lines, French media also reported that fiber optic cables were found cut in six locations across France overnight Sunday into Monday, causing some isolated outages.

Celebrations in Venezuela as Maduro wins elections

0
Supporters of President Maduro took to the streets to celebrate

As the electoral authorities, which Nicolas Maduro controls, announced he’d won a third term in office, an instant crackle of fireworks rippled around the Venezuelan Caracas.

The city sound tracked in a carefully curated way, like many things in this election.

The opposition claimed instantly that they, not the president, had won.

But you wouldn’t know this from watching the news here.

Television screens up and down the country only showed jubilant crowds, draped in the Venezuelan flag, dancing and cheering on the president.

Nicolas Maduro does have some loyal supporters still, known as “Chavistas” after his mentor Hugo Chavez and the brand of socialism he created.

But their numbers are highly disputed, and this election result is far from over.

As the city hums back into life this morning, the government faces pressure from both the international community and the opposition here to explain their numbers – after the opposition were so far ahead in the polls beforehand.

There are some things that are indisputable. Some which I, as an observer on the ground, was witness to.

There were the huge queues at polling stations, but only tiny amounts of people being let in at one time. This led to accusations of deliberate delays, perhaps in the hope some people would give up and go home.

When our BBC team arrived at one polling station, the organiser of the station took a call saying the international media were there. 150 people were then suddenly allowed to be admitted.

There were some poll stations that didn’t open at all, leading to protests and clashes with the authorities.

There were allegations that some of those who work for the state, including police students, were told how to vote.

There was the fact President Maduro’s face remained emblazoned above some poll stations even on voting day.

Ways to Keep Your Kidneys Healthy

0
Doctor attending to a kidney patient

A major function of the kidney is to remove waste products and excess fluid from the body. These waste products and excess fluid are removed through the urine. The critical regulation of the body’s salt, potassium and acid content is performed by the kidneys. The kidneys also produce hormones that affect the function of other organs. Some of the ways to keep your kidney healthy are;

Eat Healthy

Your kidneys process everything you eat or drink, including anything that’s bad for you, like lots of fat, salt, and sugar. Over time, a bad diet can lead to high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes, and other conditions that are hard on your kidneys. A healthy diet has lots of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, and few processed foods.

Watch Your Salt

This mineral affects people in different ways. For some, it seems to raise the amount of protein in their urine. That can harm your kidneys or make kidney disease worse if you already have it. Lots of salt also raises your chances of high blood pressure, a typical cause of kidney disease, and kidney stones, which can be very painful and possibly cause damage without treatment.

Drink Enough Water

Water helps get important nutrients to your kidneys and move waste to your bladder in the form of urine. If you don’t drink enough, the tiny filters inside your kidneys can get stopped up and lead to kidney stones and infections. Even mild dehydration can damage your kidneys if it happens often enough. Four to six cups a day is typically about right, but you might need more if you’re sick or out in the heat.

Exercise

Just like a healthy diet, this helps prevent conditions like diabetes and heart disease that can lead to kidney damage. But don’t try to go from couch potato to gym rat in a day. Too much exercise can also damage your kidneys if you’re not ready for it. Work your way up to 30 to 60 minutes at least five days a week. Start slow if you haven’t done it in a while, and check with your doctor first if you have health issues.

Beware of Antibiotics

These bacteria-fighting drugs can damage your kidneys if you use them too often. It can happen even if you’re perfectly healthy, though it’s more serious if your kidneys don’t work as well as they should. Some types, like penicillin, sulfonamides, and cephalosporins, are more likely to cause problems.

Skip Herbal Supplements

Supplement makers don’t have to prove their products are safe, and some can damage your kidneys. Those can be especially harmful if you have kidney disease because they can make the condition worse or affect how some medicines work. Talk with your doctor before trying any herbal supplement.

Get Screened

It’s important to know your risk for kidney disease. It’s more likely if you or close relatives have heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, or a family history of kidney failure. In these cases, your doctor might suggest specific kidney tests as part of your regular checkup. The earlier you catch it, the easier it is to treat and sometimes even stop.

Be Careful With Alcohol

If you’re healthy, a drink or two isn’t likely to hurt your kidneys. But binge drinking (having more than four drinks in less than 2 hours) can cause sudden, serious damage and possibly lead to long-term problems. And alcohol often can dehydrate you, which can keep your kidneys from working well and lead to weight gain, liver disease, high blood pressure, and other conditions that put more stress on them.

Quit Smoking

Smoking raises your risk of kidney cancer and damages blood vessels, which affects your kidneys by slowing blood flow to them. Plus, smoking can affect certain drugs that treat high blood pressure. This is serious because uncontrolled high blood pressure is a leading cause of kidney disease.

Manage Health Problems

The two most common conditions that affect your kidneys are diabetes and high blood pressure. A balanced diet and regular exercise can help keep both under control. With diabetes, it’s also important to keep a close eye on your blood sugar and take insulin when you need it. For high blood pressure, check your numbers regularly and take all medicines exactly as your doctor prescribes them.

The Dual Nature of Family Meals: Strengthening Bonds and Minimizing Health Risks

0
Family dinner

Eating together as a family has been a time-honoured that not only nourishes the body but also strengthens familial bonds and promotes unity. The act of sharing a meal provides an opportunity family members to come together, disconnect from technological distractions, and engage in meaningful conversations. Beyond the social and emotional benefits, family meals also have a positive impact on children’s development, including improved academic performance, increased self-esteem, and reduced risk of substance abuse.

Furthermore, family meals play a crucial role in shaping healthy eating habits. Sitting down together allows parents to set an example by demonstrating balanced food choices and portion control. It creates an environment in which children can explore an assortment of nutritious foods and develop a varied palate. The opportunity for regular mealtime discussions facilitates dialogue about the importance of making healthy food choices and educating children about nutrition.

However, amidst the many advantages of family meals, it is essential to address the hidden health risks they can pose. Shared meals can be a prime opportunity for the transmission of infectious diseases, especially in cases where proper hygiene practices are overlooked. Contaminated food or inadequate hand washing can lead to the spread of bacteria, viruses, or parasites, putting family members at risk of becoming ill. This is particularly concerning in instances where there are vulnerable individuals, such as young children, pregnant women, or elderly family members, who are more susceptible to severe consequences.

To minimize health risks, several strategies can be implemented. First and foremost, practicing good hygiene is crucial. Regular hand washing before and after handling food, as well as ensuring that all utensils and food preparation surfaces are thoroughly cleaned, is imperative in preventing the spread of harmful pathogens. Additionally, safe food handling practices, including proper cooking temperatures and appropriate storage of leftovers, should be followed meticulously.

In cases where physical distancing is necessary, virtual family meals can be a viable alternative. Using video conferencing platforms, families can connect and share a meal together, even if they are physically apart. This can help maintain the sense of togetherness and keep the tradition of family meals alive, while minimizing the risk of disease transmission.

To enjoy the benefits of family meals while minimizing health risks, families can adopt various strategies. Firstly, practicing good hygiene is crucial. Encouraging thorough hand washing before and after meals, using hand sanitizers, and promoting good respiratory hygiene can significantly reduce the transmission of illnesses. Secondly, safe food handling practices should be followed to prevent cross-contamination. This includes using separate cutting boards for different food items, cooking meats to appropriate temperatures, and safely storing leftovers. Regular health checks and, if needed, isolating sick family members from shared meals can help prevent the spread of illness. During times of illness outbreaks, virtual meals can provide an alternative, allowing families to connect through video calls while eating separately. Creating a healthy eating environment by encouraging balanced meals and reducing processed foods not only supports physical health but also enhances the overall dining experience. Lastly, educating family members, especially children, about the importance of hygiene practices and disease prevention can establish lifelong habits.

Role of Public Health Education

Public health education plays a vital role in helping families understand and mitigate the risks associated with shared meals. Health authorities and organizations can provide resources and guidelines on safe food handling, hygiene practices, and disease prevention. By raising awareness and promoting best practices, public health initiatives empower families to make informed decisions about their meal practices. Educating families on the risks and benefits of shared meals can help them strike a balance between strengthening family bonds and safeguarding the health and well-being of all members.

Conclusion

While it is essential to be aware of the hidden health risks associated with shared meals, implementing strategies such as practicing good hygiene, safe food handling, and virtual meals can help mitigate these risks. Public health education serves as a vital tool in equipping families with the knowledge and resources needed to make informed decisions. By combining the positive aspects of family meals with responsible practices, families can continue to reap the rewards of shared meals while safeguarding their health and well-being.
