Marburg virus outbreak kills six in Rwanda

Marburg virus

Six people have died from an outbreak of Marburg virus in Rwanda, the health minister has announced.

Sabin Nsanzimana said most of the victims were healthcare workers in the intensive care unit.

Twenty cases have been identified since the outbreak was confirmed on Friday.

Marburg, with a fatality rate of up to 88%, is from the same virus family as Ebola. It spreads to humans from fruit bats and then through contact with bodily fluids of infected individuals.

Symptoms include fever, muscle pains, diarrhoea, vomiting and, in some cases, death through extreme blood loss.

There are no specific treatments or a vaccine for the virus but a range of blood products, drug and immune therapies are being developed, according to the World Health Organization.

Rwanda says it is intensifying contact tracing, surveillance and testing to help contain the spread.

Authorities are urging the public to stay vigilant, wash their hands with clean water and soap or sanitiser and report all suspected cases.

Neighbouring Tanzania reported an outbreak in 2023, while three people died in Uganda in 2017.

SpaceX launches mission to rescue astronauts stranded at ISS

NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos

SpaceX has launched its mission to bring back two astronauts stranded on the International Space Station (ISS) since June.

The Dragon capsule, which has two empty seats for Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, lifted off from Cape Canaveral, Florida on Saturday.

The pair’s mission at the space station had only been expected to last about eight days but after a fault was found on the new Boeing Starliner it returned to Earth empty as a precaution.

Nasa astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexander Gorbunov are flying with fresh supplies for Butch and Suni and expect to bring them home in February.

The Dragon launch had been scheduled for Thursday but was delayed because of Hurricane Helene, which has left a trail of destruction through Florida, north through Georgia and into Tennessee and the Carolinas.

SpaceX, founded by billionaire Elon Musk, has been ferrying crews to and from the ISS every six months.

The Dragon is expected to dock with the ISS on Sunday at around 21:30 GMT.

Under a contract between Nasa and Roscosmos, the Russian federal space agency, three-seat Russian Soyuz spacecraft carry one Nasa astronaut on each flight to the ISS and a cosmonaut flies on each four-seat Dragon.

US says it killed 37 ISIL, Hurras al-Din fighters in separate Syria attacks

United States military

The United States military says it has killed dozens of fighters from ISIL (ISIS) and an al-Qaeda-affiliated armed group in two separate attacks this month in Syria.

In a statement released on Sunday, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said that a “large-scale airstrike” on a remote ISIL camp in central Syria on September 16 killed at least 28 operatives, including four senior leaders.

The statement did not identify the people killed but said the attack would disrupt ISIL’s “capability to conduct operations against U.S. interests, as well as our allies and partners”.

CENTCOM also said that an attack in northwestern Syria on September 24 killed nine fighters, including “Marwan Bassam ‘Abd-al-Ra’uf, a senior Hurras al-Din leader responsible for overseeing military operations from Syria”.

This was the second attack targeting the senior leadership of the al-Qaeda-aligned group in as many months. In August, CENTCOM announced the killing of Abu-Abd al-Rahman al-Makki in an attack in Syria. Hurras al-Din emerged in Syria in 2018, linked to al-Qaeda supporters.

The US has about 900 troops in Syria, as well as an undisclosed number of contractors. It says its forces are on a mission to advise and assist local allies trying to prevent a resurgence of ISIL, which in 2014 swept through parts of Syria and neighbouring Iraq.

Israel bombs Lebanon for seventh day as people forced to sleep on streets

Israel bombs Lebanon

Israeli jets have bombed targets across Lebanon, including the capital Beirut, for a seventh day. Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati said that intense attacks may have forced up to a million people to flee their homes in possibly the “worst displacement crisis” in the country’s history.

The Israeli military said in a statement on Sunday that its warplanes struck Hezbollah targets, including rocket launchers and weapons storage facilities. Earlier, the military said it had carried out dozens of air raids across Lebanon two days after the assassination of the group’s leader Hassan Nasrallah in a southern Beirut suburb.

At least 11 people were killed in an air raid on a house in the town of Ain in the Bekaa Valley in the northeast, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency.

The Israeli military also announced on Sunday the killing of Nabil Kaouk, another high-ranking Hezbollah official, a day after the Lebanese armed group confirmed Nasrallah’s assassination in the southern Beirut suburb of Dahiyeh on Friday. Hezbollah also confirmed Kaouk’s killing on Sunday.

The killing of several top Hezbollah commanders in recent weeks has dealt a huge blow to the group engaged in cross-border fighting with Israel since last October. The Lebanese armed group started firing rockets at Israel in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza. The group has set a ceasefire in Gaza as a condition to stop its cross-border attacks.

Electoral Offences: Obey court orders –SERAP Tells INEC chairman

0
INEC boss Mahmood Yakubu

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, SERAP, has called on the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, to obey court judgement on electoral offences committed during the 2023 general polls.

This is contained in a statement by its Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare on Sunday.

Oluwadare said Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court Abuja delivered judgment on July 18 following a mandamus lawsuit brought by SERAP.

The group urged the INEC boss to enforce the judgment, ordering INEC to pursue cases of bribery against state governors and their deputies and other electoral offences committed during the 2023 general elections.

According to him, it is unacceptable for INEC to take the court, which is the guardian of justice in the country, for a ride.

He said the recurring cases of electoral bribery and violence make a mockery of Nigeria’s electoral process and participatory democracy.

The Deputy Director said the latest allegations of electoral offences in Edo State show that INEC has learnt little or nothing from the well-documented problems during the 2023 general elections.

“We would be grateful if the recommended measures are taken within 7 days of the receipt and/or publication of this letter. If we have not heard from you by then, SERAP shall consider pursuing contempt proceedings against you and INEC for your continuing failure to obey the court judgment,” he said.

SERAP expressed worry over what it called the continuing failure by INEC to obey the court judgment, saying it contributes to electoral offences as seen in the Edo State election,

It said that obeying the court judgment would go a long way in protecting the integrity of the electoral and legal systems.

“Recall that Justice Egwuatu had ordered INEC to seek the appointment of an independent counsel to investigate allegations of electoral offences including bribery, vote-buying, conspiracy, and undue influence against state governors and their deputies during the 2023 general elections.

Tinubu appoints Tegbe as DG China-Nigeria strategic partnership

0

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe as Director-General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria-China strategic partnership.

The development followed a commitment by the two countries to establish hospital alliances and collaborate on medical research.

This was announced in a release by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President
(Information and Strategy), on Sunday.

According to the statement, Tegbe, a 1988 first-class graduate in civil engineering from Obafemi Awolowo University, will report directly to the President.

He is also a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (FCA) and a fellow of the Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria.

Onanuga said Tegbe will immediately submit a strategic action plan to enable Nigeria to benefit from the agreements between the two countries in Beijing.

“As the czar of the strategic partnership, he will lead day-to-day operations, engage continuously with the Chinese counterparts, and ensure that all deliverables are met and synchronised with national development goals.

“In the strategic plan, he will outline the specific deliverables, timelines, and key performance indicators for each area of cooperation. This will include priority projects, projected investments and expected socioeconomic outcomes,” part of the statement read.

Recall that at the 2024 Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC), President Xi Jinping pledged 360 billion yuan, or about $51 billion, in new financing to African nations in the next three years.

During his official visit before the FOCAC, President Tinubu also obtained a commitment from President Xi to support Nigeria’s economic diversification plans, infrastructure development, technology transfer, and job creation.

What to Know About Coffee and Depression

0

Caffeine is a stimulant found in food and beverages like coffee. Drinking a cup of caffeinated coffee gives you a boost of energy that can lift you out of a bad mood. It’s one reason why we consume over 600 million cups of coffee in the U.S. each day.

Research into coffee and depression has found that people tend to experience less severe symptoms when they drink coffee.

Studies of the effects of coffee on the body have found other positive benefits, like lowering the risk of getting cancer or having a stroke. Drinking coffee can also reduce our risk of developing dementia and Parkinson’s disease. The protective compounds found in coffee beans, along with the effects of caffeine, can improve our mental cognitive abilities and lower the potential of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

How Coffee Impacts Your Depression Symptoms

Depression affects millions of people throughout the U.S. The severity of depression symptoms varies from person to person. Some of the most common symptoms of depression include having little interest in activities that used to bring you pleasure, difficulty concentrating, and a lack of energy. People diagnosed with clinical depression experience symptoms for at least two weeks.

Researchers became curious about whether the stimulative properties found in coffee could relieve symptoms of depression. One published study showed a correlation between drinking more coffee and a reduction in the severity of depression symptoms. A separate study focused on middle-aged adults produced similar results.

It appears that drinking coffee can help people diagnosed with depression. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean it should become a staple of your diet. While there are some health benefits to drinking coffee, there are also drawbacks to excess coffee consumption.

The Risks of Drinking Too Much Coffee

Boosts of caffeine have become a staple among working adults and students looking for energy to push through with their jobs or studies. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) considers four regular-sized cups of coffee as generally safe. However, drinking coffee can produce side effects like restlessness, a rapid heartbeat, and insomnia.

Drinking more than four cups of coffee per day can increase these adverse effects. Some people report having symptoms like heightened anxiety, headaches, and agitation. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), which is used to assess and diagnose mental disorders, calls it “coffee intoxication”.

Because caffeine is a drug, people can develop a dependency. Trying to quit cold-turkey on your coffee consumption can produce symptoms like fatigue, pounding headaches, and a lack of mental clarity. That may offset the benefits of drinking coffee to help with depression.

The caffeine in coffee can interact negatively with medications taken to treat health issues like a thyroid disorder. It can also interact negatively with drugs prescribed for mental health issues. If you have diabetes, excessive coffee consumption can increase your blood sugar levels and make it harder to manage your insulin.

Postmenopausal women who drink more than three cups of coffee per day may start losing bone in their spine because of a lack of calcium. Others who should exhibit caution regarding drinking coffee, even to help with depression, include those with acid reflux or high cholesterol.

Lifestyle Changes That Help With Depression

Drinking coffee in moderation can provide some help with symptoms of depression. Try putting off your first cup of coffee until you’ve been awake for at least an hour. That gives your body time to produce more of a natural energy booster called cortisol. It’s better to put your coffee breaks off until you need them, like the middle of the morning or afternoon when your cortisol levels drop.

If you’re not a regular coffee drinker, try to reserve your coffee drinking for when your symptoms threaten to overwhelm you. Avoid drinking caffeine close to your bedtime so you’re able to get a good night’s sleep.

Eliminating sweet beverages from your diet can help with depression. You can still incorporate coffee into your diet by not adding sugar. People who drink unsweetened coffee have been shown to feel less depressed than those who don’t drink coffee.

Another non-medical remedy you might want to try to help with depression is regular exercise. It helps elevate your mood and reduce the severity of your depression symptoms. You may find that you’re able to wean yourself off relying on coffee because of the serotonin and endorphin boost you get from increased physical activity.

As always, your best bet is to speak with a doctor about your depression and talk with them about different treatment options.

Osasuna stun Barcelona to their first La Liga defeat

0
Bryan Zaragoza scored once and Ante Budimir twice for Osasuna

Ante Budimir scored twice as Osasuna stunned Barcelona, who fell to their first La Liga defeat of the season.

The Croatia striker ghosted in behind the Barca defence to head home Bryan Zaragoza’s cross from close range after 18 minutes.

Zaragoza increased Osasuna’s lead, running clear through on goal and slotting past goalkeeper Inaki Pena.

Pau Victor got a goal back for Barca after the break with an effort that goalkeeper Sergio Herrera fumbled into his own net.

But Budimir restored Osasuna’s two-goal advantage, converting the penalty he earned when was brought down by Sergi Dominguez inside the box.

Abel Bretones extended the lead to 4-1 when he fired a fierce strike from the edge of the area into the bottom right corner with five minutes remaining.

Lamine Yamal pulled one back for Barca with a superb finish into the top corner, but it came too late as the away side.

Defeat means Barca, who had won their opening seven league matches, missed the chance to equal their best-ever start to a campaign. Real Madrid could move a point behind the leaders with victory over Atletico Madrid on Sunday (20:00 BST).

Barca turn their attention to the Champions League where they will host Young Boys on Tuesday, hoping to bounce back from their opening defeat against Monaco.
