‘You promised to handle security’ -Peter Obi reminds Vice Prez Shettima

Peter Obi

The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi, has asked President Bola Tinubu to fulfil his campaign promises to Nigerians by tackling the rampant insecurity in the country.

Obi, who, on Tuesday, expressed deep concern over what he described as a surge of violence spreading through the Federal Capital Territory, warned that no foreign investor or partner would like to invest in Nigeria, given the situation the country has found itself in.

According to him, the recent killings of two abducted young girls in Abuja made it more depressing, stressing that it is now time for the leaders to take all forms of serious measures to tackle the situation.

In a statement issued on his X handle on Tuesday, the former Anambra State governor lamented that insecurity worsened under the past administration of President Muhammadu Buhari, who campaigned and won the elections with the promise of tackling security, the economy and corruption.

“As terror attacks, banditry, kidnappings and violence continue to rage through the country, it is more concerning now with the surge of violence spreading through the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

“The recent killings of two abducted young girls in Abuja make it more depressing and urgent. It is now time for we, the leaders, to take all forms of serious measures to tackle the situation. It is unfortunate that President Muhammadu Buhari, in 2015, campaigned and won the elections on three items; Security, Economy and Corruption (SEC).

“After his eight years in office, the situation has worsened in all three areas. The present administration, on assuming office, promised to deal decisively with the same situation – Security, Economy and Corruption. Today, however, the situation is getting even worse than ever.

“At the Annual General Conference of the Nigerian Bar Association held in Lagos in August 2022, the then Vice Presidential candidate, Sen Kashim Shettima, categorically stated that if APC is elected, he as Vice President would be in charge of security, while the President as an expert in economy would handle the economy.

“It is now time to stop all forms of foreign trips from people in government until we deal with the ugly situation facing us at home. No foreign investor or partner will like to invest in Nigeria, with the situation we now find ourselves in.”

The Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) has commenced field data collection for the 2024 Ghana Integrated Business Establishment Survey Phase I (IBES I).

About fourteen thousand (14,000) Field Officers have been trained and deployed by the Service across the country for the data collection exercise. The IBES I focuses on a comprehensive list of all business entities within the country.

Within the period of field data collection, the Field Officers will be visiting every structure and space in their assigned areas to enumerate all business entities identified, including businesses operating in structures, businesses operating in open spaces, mobile businesses and virtual businesses.

Thus, all business entities that conduct activities in Ghana are to be covered, regardless of the location, status or size.

The overarching goal of IBES I is to compile a detailed list of businesses, capturing essential characteristics that contribute to the development of a robust Statistical Business Register and other key statistical indicators to enhance national development.

Among others, IBES 1 will provide updated data on:

1) Activities, locations, ownership, ages, and sizes of businesses to inform policy, planning, and monitoring of business growth and national development programmes.

2) The current structure of Ghana’s economy, to facilitate the revision of key macroeconomic indicators including Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Producer Price Index (PPI), and the Index of Industrial Production (IIP).

3) Employment status of workers employed by businesses to help bridge the gap between the labour needs of firms and the available skills.

4) Characteristics of the informal sector to guide the development of policies aimed at formalising the economy and improving the welfare of workers in the various sectors.

According to GSS, the Field Officers would be identified by their Integrated Business Establishment Survey (IBES) Vests and Identification Cards.

They have as such encouraged the public to cooperate with the IBES Field Officers by providing all the needed information to ensure a successful field data collection exercise.

The GSS expressed appreciation to institutions, organisations and individuals for the support received so far and ask for further cooperation to ensure a successful implementation of this important national exercise.

Mr Gabby Otchere Darko

Poverty allocation will take the centre stage of the upcoming second edition of the African Prosperity Dialogue (APD).

The dialogue is being organised by the Africa Prosperity Network (APN), in collaboration with the Africa Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), under the theme: “Delivering Prosperity in Africa: Produce, Add value, Trade.”

In his opening remarks, at a joint press briefing in Accra, on Tuesday, the founder and Executive Chairman of APN, Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko said the objective of APN was to change the African narrative via prioritising poverty alleviation.

He said the Africa prosperity agenda is core to the event, which is scheduled to take place from January 25 to 27, 2024 in the Eastern Region.

Mr. Otchere -Darko said Africa has a lot of potentials that needed to be harnessed to turn fortunes and realities of the continent around and that the event will host entrepreneurs and chief executives, among others, to discuss ways of boosting intra-Africa trade and helping to promote economic growth.

Stressing on the importance of intra-African trade, he stated: “if over the first decade of its coming into being as in the AfCFTA, it is going to work, then there must be that push within the first 10 years, which is between 2021 and 2031.

If we can’t get it right now, then we can get it right because it’s the biggest project since 61 years ago, it’s not by accident that Ghana hosts the Secretariat, given the vision of Nkrumah and others.”

Mr. Otchere-Darko urged, particularly players in the private sector, to take advantage of the avenues provided by AfCFTA to grow their businesses.

This was as AfCFTA sought to remove all artificial barriers impeding trade among member states.

Chief Executive officer of APN, Njack Kane, said the three days event will capture issues on agriculture, finance, investment, ICT, among others.

He said participants would be drawn from various parts of the continent to discuss policy issues with critical stakeholders who would offer meaningful discussions on happenings in the continent and propose solutions.

“We will also address youthful policies, natural resources on hydrocarbons in the mining sector, how to add value to our continent’s resources, how to accelerate inter-African trade industrialisation, and how to take advantage of the over 1.4 billion market size the continent has,” he added.

Silver Ojakol, a representative of the Secretary General of the AfCFTA, lauded APN for the initiative, to ensure that the Africa’s agenda is achieved.

He said APN would serve as a useful platform for African countries to deliberate and strategies as well as focus on the natural resources and youthful workforce, to fulfil the promises for the people of the continent.

Article Wan

Afro-dancehall and reggae artiste, Article Wan, born Bright Homenya has revealed the reason why he stopped granting interviews.

He said some bloggers and television stations gave him a platform, but he declined because there was no available content to promote.

Speaking on Joy Prime’s new entertainment show, the musician explained that he needed time to rebrand, produce new hit songs, and bounce back big in the industry.

“I decided not to go to any interviews because I didn’t have content. Zion was in the UK, and we were supposed to have an interview, but I told him, ‘Zion,’ you’re my boss, but the thing is, I don’t have any content I need to do the interview and get my song played,” Article Wan shared.

The ‘Solo’ hit-maker further explained that his absence was to give himself time to bring forth a bigger and better version of Article Wan.

“At a point in my life, I have decided to sit back and rebrand the Article Wan. Because there’s a lot of money in music, I travel a lot, I hear different stuff, and I see different stuff, so why don’t I sit back? It’s a matter of time; just give time to yourself. I’m not dead yet; I’m not going to die right now; I just need to sit back, work properly, put more energy into my production, the brand, how I appear on stage, my craft, my creativity, and then come back again.”

While he was away, Article Wan travelled to some international countries. He revealed on the show that he needed to break out of Ghana’s music market and promote himself globally.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy speaks with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (L)

The European Union and the United States have urged allies of Ukraine to keep up with their funding as the war with Russia nears the two-year mark, with no resolution to the fighting in sight.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken promised sustained US support for Ukraine in a meeting on Tuesday with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy despite a row in the US Congress on approving new funding.

“We are determined to sustain our support for Ukraine and we’re working very closely with Congress in order to work to do that. I know our European colleagues will do the same thing,” Blinken told Zelenskyy at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Jake Sullivan, US President Joe Biden’s national security adviser, joined the meeting and told Zelenskyy that the US and its allies were determined “to ensure that Russia fails and Ukraine wins”.

Zelenskyy thanked the Biden administration and the “bipartisan support” in the US Congress. “We really count on your support – continuing your huge support,” he said.
