Quinta Brunson has made history by winning an Emmy for Best Actress in a Comedy Series, marking the first time a Black actress has claimed this category since Isabel Sanford of “The Jeffersons” in 1981. The award recognized Brunson’s outstanding performance in the ABC sitcom “Abbott Elementary,” a show she not only starred in but also created and contributed to as a writer.

During her emotional acceptance speech, Brunson, clutching her statuette, expressed her deep love for the comedic art form. “I love making ‘Abbott Elementary’ so much, and I am so happy to be able to live my dream and act out comedy,” she said, fighting through tears. Grateful for the honor, she added, “I am so happy to be able to get this.”

Brunson extended her appreciation to her “entire family,” her husband, and the cast of “Abbott Elementary.” Notably, this achievement marked her second Emmy win, as she previously received the award in 2022 for Outstanding Writing in a Comedy Series for her contributions to “Abbott.”

In addition to her recent win, Brunson is nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series at the 75th Emmy Awards for her hosting role on “Saturday Night Live.” Furthermore, “Abbott Elementary” is nominated for an Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy.

“Abbott Elementary” stands out as a workplace comedy that follows a group of teachers in a Philadelphia public school navigating challenges and striving for student success despite limited resources.

Afro-dancehall and reggae artiste, Article Wan, born Bright Homenya has revealed the reason why he stopped granting interviews.

He said some bloggers and television stations gave him a platform, but he declined because there was no available content to promote.

Speaking on Joy Prime’s new entertainment show, the musician explained that he needed time to rebrand, produce new hit songs, and bounce back big in the industry.

“I decided not to go to any interviews because I didn’t have content. Zion was in the UK, and we were supposed to have an interview, but I told him, ‘Zion,’ you’re my boss, but the thing is, I don’t have any content I need to do the interview and get my song played,” Article Wan shared.

The ‘Solo’ hit-maker further explained that his absence was to give himself time to bring forth a bigger and better version of Article Wan.

“At a point in my life, I have decided to sit back and rebrand the Article Wan. Because there’s a lot of money in music, I travel a lot, I hear different stuff, and I see different stuff, so why don’t I sit back? It’s a matter of time; just give time to yourself. I’m not dead yet; I’m not going to die right now; I just need to sit back, work properly, put more energy into my production, the brand, how I appear on stage, my craft, my creativity, and then come back again.”

While he was away, Article Wan travelled to some international countries. He revealed on the show that he needed to break out of Ghana’s music market and promote himself globally.

She said, “If you ask me now can you tell me one failure, I don’t see it as a failure. My personal life – marriage, I just take it as it comes. My mental health is very important. My career is very important, darling.

“I have to make an impact. I have to empower a lot of people. I have to inspire young people out there. I have to stay strong for my children and my siblings.

“Why am I living? I have a purpose, so my head is up. Yes I cry, yes I break down, but after I cry, I just look in the mirror and say, ‘keep moving,’” Funke Akindele said.

Scene at Thai factory after explosion

At least 10 people have died following an explosion at a fireworks depot in central Thailand, according to officials.

It was not immediately clear what caused the explosion, which happened at around 4 p.m. local time (4 a.m. ET) on Wednesday in Suphan Buri province, north of Thailand’s capital Bangkok, local police said.

“We estimated there are about 10 deaths, we are still investigating the cause and the exact number of casualties,” Police Colonel Peerapoj Rawangbarn told CNN.

Police said the fire around the area had now been put out, and that rescue workers and forensic officers were working to retrieve human remains from and around the demolished factory.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin was briefed on the explosion while he was at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, and ordered an urgent investigation to see if the explosion was caused by negligence, Reuters reported.

The European Union and the United States have urged allies of Ukraine to keep up with their funding as the war with Russia nears the two-year mark, with no resolution to the fighting in sight.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken promised sustained US support for Ukraine in a meeting on Tuesday with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy despite a row in the US Congress on approving new funding.

“We are determined to sustain our support for Ukraine and we’re working very closely with Congress in order to work to do that. I know our European colleagues will do the same thing,” Blinken told Zelenskyy at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

Jake Sullivan, US President Joe Biden’s national security adviser, joined the meeting and told Zelenskyy that the US and its allies were determined “to ensure that Russia fails and Ukraine wins”.

Zelenskyy thanked the Biden administration and the “bipartisan support” in the US Congress. “We really count on your support – continuing your huge support,” he said.

Crowds clash with riot police as Russia jails activist

Large demonstrations are rare in Russia

Russian riot police fired tear gas and hit protesters with batons in Bashkortostan on Wednesday after a rights activist was sentenced to four years in a penal colony. Footage showed supporters of Fail Alsynov clashing with police – some throwing snowballs – near the court.

Alsynov was jailed for inciting ethnic hatred, which he denies.

The trial, and protests, took place in Baymak in southern Russia, near the border with Kazakhstan.

Authorities have opened a investigation against some of those demonstrating under “mass rioting” charges, which carry a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

Some reports say there were a few thousand people at the demonstration, which went on for several days in temperatures of around -20C.

Protesters were seen shouting their support for Alsynov, and there are reports that some tried to block the courthouse entrance after the sentence was announced.

Qatar announces Israel-Hamas deal for medicine & aid to Gaza

Palestinians wait to receive food

Israel and Hamas have reached an agreement to allow medicines to be delivered to Israeli captives held in the Gaza Strip and for aid to be transported to residents in the besieged Palestinian territory, Qatar has announced.

The deal will see humanitarian aid delivered to civilians in “the most affected and vulnerable areas” in Gaza in exchange for the delivery of medication to Israeli captives held by Hamas, the group that governs Gaza, Qatar’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement on Tuesday.

Ministry spokesperson Majed al-Ansari said medication and aid will leave Doha on Wednesday for the Egyptian city of El Arish in preparation for their delivery into the Gaza Strip.

He said the agreement was mediated by Qatar in cooperation with France.

Earlier, Philippe Lalliot, head of France’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Crisis Centre, which organises aid efforts, said negotiations had been going on for weeks and the initial idea had come from the families of some of the Israeli captives.

Specific medical packages for several months, which were put together in France, would be delivered to each of the 45 captives.

China records population decline for second straight year

Beijing says the birth rate is now down

China’s population has declined for a second consecutive year, underscoring concerns about the future growth of the world’s second-largest economy.

Data released on Wednesday showed a population of 1.409 billion at the end of 2023 – a 2.08m decrease from 2022.

The most recent decline is double that of the previous year, which marked the first population drop in 60 years.

But experts say this fall is expected given the country’s expanding urban class and record-low birth rate.

Beijing on Wednesday said the birth rate was now down to 6.39 per 1,000 people on par with other advanced East Asian nations such as Japan and South Korea.

The country has seen falling birth rates for decades – after imposing a controversial one child-policy in the 1980s to control over-population at the time.

The government lifted the policy in 2015 to try to stem the population fall, and has brought in a series of other incentives too, such as subsidies and payments to encourage people to start families. In 2021, it further relaxed the limit to allow couples to have up to three children.

However, the policies have had little impact, with young people in modern cities citing deterrents like the cost of living and career priorities after a three-year Covid period.

Pakistan condemns deadly Iranian missile strike on its territory

Iran launched a missile attack apparently targeting militant bases in western Pakistan which killed two children, officials in Islamabad said.

The operation hit two sites in Balochistan linked to the militant group Jaish al-Adl, Iran’s state TV said. Iran attacked targets in Iraq and Syria earlier this week.

Pakistani officials said two children were killed and three others injured.

Islamabad said the attack was “illegal” and warned of “serious consequences”.

However Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, speaking in Davos, insisted that no Pakistani nationals had been targeted, only members of Jaish al-Adl.

The latest air strike comes at a time of growing tension across the Middle East, with war raging between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas in Gaza.

Tehran says it does not want to get involved in a wider conflict. But groups in its so-called “Axis of Resistance”, which include the Houthi militants in Yemen, Hezbollah in Lebanon and various groups in Syria and Iraq, have been carrying out attacks on Israel and its allies to show solidarity with the Palestinians. The US and UK have launched air strikes on the Houthis after they attacked commercial shipping.
