Brighton come from behind to draw with Arsenal

0
Joao Pedro scored his first away Premier League goal for Brighton

A second-half goal from Joao Pedro saw Brighton come from behind to draw after Arsenal had Declan Rice sent off in an entertaining game in north London.

It looked as though the Gunners were going to continue their perfect start to the season when Bukayo Saka played through Kai Havertz, who lobbed Bart Verbruggen in the Brighton goal for the 38th-minute opener.

However, the game completely changed after Declan Rice was dismissed for a second yellow card in the 49th minute for delaying a free-kick being taken by Joel Veltman. The Seagulls defender could also feel lucky to have got away without picking up a card himself.

Brighton piled on the pressure after that point and drew level in the 58th minute when Yankuba Minteh’s shot was parried into the path of Pedro by David Raya and the Brazilian striker slotted the ball under the keeper.

Havertz then had a good chance to win the game when through on goal, but his effort was saved by Verbruggen, before Seagulls substitute Yasin Ayari had an effort saved by Raya late in the game.

Brighton continued to push for a winner and brought on new £39.5m signing Georginio Rutter as they looked for a magic moment, but he mistimed a header as they could not find the decisive strike.

Eze stunner earn Crystal Palace draw at Chelsea

Crystal Palace picked up their first point of the season

Eberechi Eze scored a superb equaliser as Crystal Palace drew with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues, who thrashed Wolves 6-2 last week, were the better side in the first half, with Cole Palmer firing just wide and Dean Henderson saving superbly from Noni Madueke before Nicolas Jackson broke the deadlock.

The forward finished off a fast counter by Chelsea, tapping in Palmer’s cross at the near post.

Palace were fortunate not to be reduced to 10 men when Will Hughes, on a booking, escaped punishment for a foul on Palmer.

And the Eagles were celebrating soon after when Eze curled a fine strike beyond Robert Sanchez in the Chelsea goal.

Sanchez did superbly to push away Daichi Kamada’s stinging drive and prevent Palace taking the lead, but Jackson could have won it in stoppage time for Chelsea after going through on goal, but his shot was saved by Henderson.

The draw got Crystal Palace up and running for the season after back-to-back losses, while Chelsea have four points from their three games so far.

Harry Kane scores as Bayern beat Frieburg

Kane has scored 37 goals in 34 Bundesliga games

Harry Kane scored his first Bundesliga goal of the season as Thomas Muller became Bayern Munich’s all-time record appearance holder in the win over Frieburg.

Kane sent goalkeeper Florian Muller the wrong way from the penalty spot in the 38th minute.

Muller, 34, came on as a second-half substitute for his 710th competitive appearance.

And Muller marked the occasion by scoring his 150th Bundesliga goal to double the lead in the 78th minute.

Freiburg substitute Lucas Holer missed a penalty in stoppage time when he blazed over the bar.

Kane’s penalty put Bayern in control before 12-time Bundesliga winner Muller, who made his senior debut for the club in 2008, made sure of the points in Kompany’s first home league game in charge.

Portugal midfielder Joao Palhinha also made his league debut for Bayern as a substitute after joining from Fulham in July.

Palhinha gave Freiburg the chance of a late consolation when he handled Ritsu Doan’s volley inside the penalty area, but Holer missed from the spot.

Leipzig end Bayer Leverkusen’s 35-game unbeaten run

Bayer Leverkusen’s 35-game unbeaten Bundesliga run came to an end as RB Leipzig recovered from 2-0 down to take all three points against the reigning champions.

Lois Openda scored Leipzig’s winner late in the second half, sending a powerful shot past goalkeeper Matej Kovar from outside the penalty area.

Jeremie Frimpong had given the hosts the lead in the first half after skipping past defender El Chadaille Bitshiabu and beating goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi at his near post.

Xabi Alonso’s team doubled their advantage six minutes later when Alex Grimaldo turned in Florian Wirtz’s pass from point-blank range, but former Leverkusen midfielder Kevin Kampl reduced the arrears with a header from Benjamin Henrichs’ cross in first-half stoppage time.

Openda converted Benjamin Sesko’s pass from a tight angle to bring the teams level 12 minutes into the second half, before firing home the winner with 10 minutes remaining.

Leipzig boss Marco Rose was sent off midway through the first half after remonstrating with referee Matthias Jollenbeck following Jonathan Tah’s challenge on Openda.

Leverkusen, whose only defeat last season came in the Europa League final loss to Atalanta, had not been beaten in Germany’s top flight since a 3-0 defeat at Bochum on the final day of the 2022-23 campaign – 462 days ago.

This outcome extends Leipzig’s own unbeaten league run to 13 matches, stretching back to last term.

Hansi Flick’s side are the only team to win all four matches at the start of the campaign and moved seven points ahead of champions Real Madrid.

It was the former Leeds winger who opened the scoring in the 20th minute at the Olympic Stadium.

Striker Robert Lewandowski added a second goal just four minutes after the opener for his fourth of the season.

Valladolid kept the Catalans at bay until stoppage time in the first half, when defender Jules Kounde secured a healthy lead after prodding home from a corner.

Brazil’s Raphinha scored two in eight minutes to secure the match ball before new signing Dani Olmo added a sixth with his second goal for the club.

Substitute Ferran Torres rounded off a fantastic display from Flick’s men ahead of the international break.

Rigging Is Not In Our DNA -says Akufo-Addo

President Akufo-Addo speaking at the confab

The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has stated that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) does not subscribe to rigging elections, as it is not part of their DNA.

“As far as the ruling NPP is concerned, we are a party born from the noble Danquah-Dombo-Busia political tradition; we spearheaded the national resistance to authoritarian one-party rule in Ghana in the first Republic. Rigging is not part of our DNA,” he said.

Speaking on Thursday, August 29, 2024 at the 13th Biennial and 51st Conference of the Methodist Church-Ghana, which was held at the Wesley Cathedral in Adum-Kumasi, under the theme: “Discipleship: Growing into Christian Maturity,” President Akufo-Addo told the congregation that the upcoming polls will augment Ghana’s democratic credentials.

He argued that the NPP, which was born from the Danquah-Dombo-Busia tradition abhors political authoritarian style of governance and as a result they kicked against such antecedents in post-independence encounters.
The president, therefore, assured Ghanaians that the upcoming elections would be held in a free and fair manner.
He said Ghana cherishes her reputation as the beacon of democracy on the African continent and the conduct of the forthcoming election will reinforce this reputation.

President Akufo-Addo declared that “The Akufo-Addo-led NPP government is clear about its obligation and duty to ensure that the impending elections are conducted in an atmosphere of peace and security, in full transparency and respect for the electoral laws of our country.”

The President also took the opportunity to criticise those who have been raising fears of electoral malpractice, including some members of the clergy.

He expressed disappointment in those who, instead of promoting peace, have been predicting “election rigging and Kenya-style blood-letting.”

He stated, “They will be disappointed. The 2024 elections, like the previous ones we have held in Ghana in the 4th Republic, will be conducted peacefully and in total compliance with the laws of the country.”

He also praised the Vice President and the NPP’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for presenting an “exciting vision for Ghana’s future,” adding a challenge to the opposition leader, who he claimed is afraid to debate Bawumia.

The president lauded the Methodist Church for rallying behind his administration and hailed the church for the pivotal role it plays in society.
Earlier, the outgoing Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana, Most. Rev. Dr. Paul Boafo, implored Ghanaians to abide by the tenets of democracy since it is a process and not an event.
Dr. Paul Boafo hailed the government of the day for creating additional regions, saying that these new regions had aided the Methodist Church Ghana to plant new churches.
Touching on the December general elections, the Methodist Prelate implored on Ghanaians to avoid vitriolic language.

Court

Ishmael Addo, a 43-year-old chainsaw operator, has been sentenced to a total of 30 years in prison for defiling his 12-year-old stepdaughter.

The judgment was delivered by the Gender-Based Violence Court at the Police Headquarters in Accra.

Presiding Judge Dora Araba Eshun convicted Addo on his own guilty plea to two counts of defilement.

Each count carried a 15-year prison term, with the sentences running concurrently.

In addition to the prison term, Addo has been ordered to compensate the victim with GH¢3,600 and to cover her medical expenses.

The prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Opoku Aniagyei, provided evidence that Addo had sexually abused the victim on August 3 and 4, 2024, while her mother was away on a trip.

The complainant, a 36-year-old trader, had left her daughter in Addo’s care while traveling to Afram Plains.

On August 10, 2024 a co-tenant informed the complainant that the victim was unwell and had reported the abuse.

The victim confirmed the abuse to her mother and revealed that Addo had previously assaulted her on two other occasions, whilst she was asleep.

Following the report, Addo was arrested by the Asofa Police and the case was referred to the Tesano Divisional DOVVSU.

A medical examination conducted by Dr. Anin Kazi at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital confirmed the abuse.

The court’s decision underscores its commitment to addressing gender-based violence and ensuring justice for victims.

Peace Council will address concerns of NDC -Chairman

Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, Chairman - Ghana Peace Council

Rev. Dr. Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, Chairman of the National Peace Council, has stated that the Council acknowledges the concerns of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and that the same would be addressed before the party signs the peace pact, before the upcoming December 7 general elections.

According to him, the loss of lives that occurred during the 2020 elections, which the NDC has raised are not the core responsibility of the Peace Council, but that of the police and the courts.

He noted that these Institutions are already dealing with the matters and have already spoken to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), the Attorney General (AG) and the Electoral Commission (EC) for them to shed light on.

Rev. Adu-Gyamfi, while speaking with the media on the sidelines of the 61st annual session of the Ghana Baptist Convention, expressed his conviction that the Peace Council would be able to get the NDC back to the IPAC and sign the peace pact.

He disclosed that the Council has set up Political Parties code of conduct committee, and has met with both the NDC and NPP, and that it is yet to report to the Peace Council on some of the concerns the NPP has also raised.

The chairman said once the committee reports back to the Council, it will look at the issues and address them accordingly.

He indicated that the Council expects the Inspector General of Police to go public with the issues bordering on electoral killings, so as to have clean and fair elections.

He urged all to cooperate and air their grievances for settlement and not level accusations against each other unduly.

He said the electorate must understand the whole electoral process to avoid being misled.

Rev. Dr. Nii Noi Enoch Thompson, President of the Ghana Baptist Convention (GBC), revealed in his Annual Report to the Convention that the church has targeted establishing a specialist clinic at the Baptist University Hospital in Abuakwa to be named as the Rev. John C. Raphael Specialist Clinic, plant 50 new churches, pursue the chapter of the Ghana University College and provide shelter for chapels for existing and new churches serving as community schools and health centres.
