Real Madrid, Dortmund renew hostilities at the Bernabeu

A rematch of the 2023-24 Champions League final, holders Real Madrid and hopefuls Borussia Dortmund renew hostilities in Tuesday’s league phase encounter at the Bernabeu.

It has been almost five months since Carlo Ancelotti‘s men broke BVB hearts to win European Cup number 15, as the German giants were left to lament missed chance after missed chance at Wembley.

The reigning champions had at least got the better of Dortmund’s Bundesliga rivals Stuttgart 3-1 in their opening match of the tournament, but their three-point haul is currently not even good enough for a seeded knockout place; they sit 17th in the 36-team table at this fledgling stage.

Dortmund’s European excellence has come in contrast to their mixed domestic results; the visitors just about managed to scrape a nervy 2-1 win over St Pauli at the weekend, but they have lost their last two away games in the Bundesliga to Stuttgart (5-1) and Union Berlin (2-1).

An unwanted road record could now be set by Dortmund in the Champions League, as they have visited the Bernabeu seven times without ever managing to win, losing five times and drawing twice.

Borussia Dortmund learned a harsh lesson about what happens if you do not take your chances against Real Madrid, and they have more than made up for those deficiencies in the Champions League so far this term, even if Club Brugge and Celtic do not quite stack up to Los Blancos’ mastery.

Arsenal welcome Shakhtar Donetsk to the Emirates

Having seen their Premier League unbeaten run come to a painful end, Arsenal hope to avoid suffering the same fate in the Champions League at home to Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday night.

The Gunners have taken four points from their opening two matches in this year’s new-look edition, while their Ukrainian counterparts currently sit outside the coveted top 24 places in the league phase table.

Mikel Arteta, Arsenal

While Arsenal just about managed to keep Atalanta at bay on the opening matchday of the Champions League – thanks in no small part to the goalkeeping heroics of David Raya – Shakhtar were powerless to quell the Europa League holders in their last European affair.

Bukayo Saka did not make the cut at the weekend, and the 23-year-old remains a serious doubt for the visit of Shakhtar.

Jurrien Timber – who performed exceptionally against PSG – is in the same boat with his muscular problem, while Martin Odegaard (ankle), Takehiro Tomiyasu (knee) and Kieran Tierney (hamstring) are definitely missing, although the former has the slimmest chance of coming back for the Liverpool game.

A Gunners XI without Saka or Odegaard is one missing significant ingenuity, but even a rotated Arsenal side should have no problems sweeping aside Shakhtar, as long as their own indiscipline does not let them down again.

Juve face another German opposition as they meet Stuttgart

Aiming to extend their perfect start in this season’s Champions League, Italian giants Juventus will meet Stuttgart for the first time ever on Tuesday evening.

Having won in Leipzig last time out, Juve now face more German opposition back on home turf; meanwhile, their struggling visitors have picked up just one point so far.

Dusan Vlahovic, Juventus

This week, Thiago Motta could become just the third Juventus coach to win his first three Champions League matches, after legendary duo Fabio Capello (2004) and Marcelo Lippi (1995), which would further highlight his arrival as one of Europe’s elite managers.

Dating back to Max Allegri‘s ill-fated second spell in charge, which concluded with a Coppa Italia triumph last season, Juve are unbeaten in their last 16 games across all competitions – but they left it late to beat 10-man Lazio at the weekend.

Ahead of Sunday’s Derby d’Italia against reigning champions Inter Milan, Motta’s men must now tackle Stuttgart.

Stuttgart have won just one of 11 games against Italian opposition to date, and none since beating Juve’s city rivals Torino in the UEFA Cup, way back in 1979.

As Stuttgart have won only twice on the road in 2024-25 – and one was against lower-level opponents in the DFB-Pokal – they have little hope of taking anything away from Turin.

Court order arrest of a retired Nurse & Soldier

0
Court

Her Honour Basilia Adjei-Tawiah, presiding over the Circuit Court in Accra, has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of two accused persons in a case involving conspiracy, attempted crime and engaging in land guard activities.

The accused, Akpene Asempa, a 64-year-old retired nurse and Mark Tetteh Laweh, a military officer, have failed to appear in court on three consecutive occasions, prompting the judge to issue the warrant.

Brief Facts of the Case

The Complainant, Dawood Akwasi Agyemang, is a businessman and caretaker of a residential property belonging to Lawyer Paul Abalga.

According to the Prosecution, on August 27, 2024 at approximately 7:00 pm, the first accused, Akpene Asempa, hired Adam Hamza, a Backhoe operator and a witness in the case, to demolish a fence wall belonging to Lawyer Abalga.

This action was carried out under the protection of armed military officers, including the second accused, Mark Tetteh Laweh.

Before the demolition could commence, the complainant called the police, who responded swiftly and arrested the accused persons, along with the backhoe operator, who is now a witness in the case.

The other military officers, upon seeing the police arrive, fled the scene in a military vehicle with registration number 53 GA 13.

Ongoing Investigations

Chief Inspector Wisdom Alorwu revealed that investigations are still ongoing to arrest the remaining accomplices.

The court has ordered that the accused be apprehended for their repeated failure to attend court hearings.

Achimota car dealer in court over alleged fraud

0
Accra Circuit Court

Businessman Francis Asumda, aged 34, has been charged with defrauding by false pretences in a case currently being heard before the Accra Circuit Court, presided over by Mr. Samuel Bright Acquah.

Francis Asumda is alleged to have swindled an Architect, Irke Onyika, of a sum totaling GH¢64,000 and US$3,000 under the pretext of purchasing a 2020 Chevrolet Blazer from the United States for him.

The incident dates back to March 30, 2023 when Onyika, a resident of Taifa, Accra, approached Asumda, who operates as a car dealer in Achimota, with the intention of buying the vehicle.

According to court documents, Asumda quoted a price of US$8,700 for the 2020 Chevy Blazer. Onyika provided his Chevrolet Spark, valued at GH¢35,000 as part of the transaction and further paid GH¢29,000 and $3,000 in cash to the accused. A receipt was issued for these payments.

Despite promising to deliver the vehicle within three months, Asumda failed to meet the deadline.

Onyika’s repeated efforts to either secure the vehicle or obtain a refund proved unsuccessful. Following a complaint to the police, Asumda was arrested and admitted during interrogation that he had forwarded the money to his agent in the United States, but had lost communication with the agent.

Asumda pleaded with the police for more time to refund the money, eventually paying GH¢32,000 which was handed over to the complainant.

However, the full amount has not been refunded, leading to the current charges.

Asumda was granted bail in the sum of GH¢200,000 with two sureties, one of whom must be justified, following his plea of not guilty.

The court has adjourned the case to October 21, 2024 for further hearing.

The charges are being brought under Section 131(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).

China Soon To Take Over Our Resources

Africa, is a full case study when it comes to rising to the heights of superpower to falling to the depth of slavery. Over 2,500 years BC to as recently as the 17th century AD, Africa had empires and kingdoms who were super powers and ruled the world. It was in Africa that the first university in the world, Sankore University was established, in Timbuktu, Mali in the 12th Century AD and students came from Europe to study there.

The sophisticated bureaucratic system and court procedures of the Songhai Empire are adopted today by this modern world. The Nubian kingdom of Kush was once the most powerful military nation in the world with the strongest navy.

Then all was lost. Black Africa fell flat and became slaves for the West and Arabs. The Europeans under the influence of alcohol, run sketches on the map of Africa and out of the mess, they created boundaries for nations which they named and came down to colonise; except Ethiopia, which fought out the invaders and Liberia which the West brought in freed slaves to join the indigenous ethnic groups of Kpelle, Bassa and others to form a nation.

And when the Europeans came, they took away our rich natural and mineral resources to build their countries and left us in slums and wretchedness. We struggled to be free. Our freedom came but was tied to the economic decisions the West took.

We decided to mistrust the West and started looking East for support to grow. And recently we saw in China, a partner to help us develop. We differentiated the Chinese from the Whites. The Whites came and took over our countries and directly rule us in what is called colonisation, and indirectly after we gained independence. But the Chinese are coming with no intention to enter into politics but are only in for business and development, we happily said, or so we thought.

What the Chinese have in mind is worse than what the White Man had. In the early 2000’s, I was with two African diplomats and was shocked to receive the information that whenever China is bringing down human workforce to Africa to embark on a project, majority of them are criminals, serving jail terms.

No doubt there is lawlessness and racism against Ghanaians on our home soil by the Chinese. For example, a certain Chinese woman by name Aisha Huang could enter into our forests, set up a camp and engage in illegal mining. Whenever an indigene mistakenly stepped into her grounds, she will shoot the person dead.

The Chinese dominated the illegal gold trade, from the galamsey sites to smuggling of stolen gold into their fishing vessels on high seas. The gold is stolen because by law all minerals under or on the ground are vested in our president for the people and for posterity.

When we started making noise about the conducts of the Chinese, one of their ambassadors warned us against accusing her people or we will be denied economic assistance and loan. Our leaders kept mute. Another ambassador told us that his country people do not know where our gold mines are, but we took them there so we must take the blame for the irresponsible and illegal mining the Chinese are encouraging our people to do. Our leaders kept mute.

The sad thing is, the Chinese may smuggle $3 billion worth of our gold out of the country every year and they do not compensate us let alone pay for it. When we go for $1 billion loan from China, it will take the proceeds from the sale of the gold they stole from us, and give it to us as loan with interest and other charges. And we are mandated to pay.

China’s approach to African nations is worse than what the West did to us. The West pilfered our resources, and China is also doing that. The West gives us loans, China is also doing that. When we default the West will not take over our resources but continue giving us more loans. But as for China, it will take over our very important resources and institutions in a new form of colonization. And many African countries have fallen victim to this.

It seems Ghana is soon going to be colonized by China. On October 11, 2024, Ghanaweb reported on its business page, that by an International Monetary Fund (IMF) report, the Chinese government would likely have access to our mineral and electricity revenues due to our failure to honour our loan agreement with China, which as at the end of 2022, stood at $1.9 billion.

Like seriously, after carefully executing a plot to offload its nationals into our forests to steal our gold, the Chinese are saying that today we owe them and must forfeit all our minerals and electricity to them. What about our gold they stole which all their ambassadors are aware of? They better go and collect their money from their people who came here to do galamsey, for the Chinese government will certainly know the culprits. Either that or we calculate how much gold was stolen by the Chinese and force China to payus the difference.

We were colonised before but this time we must join Asantes to fight any country attempting to colonize us.

Editorial: It Is Important Ghana Switches To Clean Cooking

0
Editorial

Research by health experts abound in the fact that firewood and charcoal, traditional cooking fuels for many households, are not only outdated but are silent killers.Firewood and charcoal have long been staples in kitchens in almost every rural home across the country. However, the health risks associated with their continued use are alarming.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), indoor air pollution from traditional cooking methods like burning firewood is responsible for over four million deaths worldwide each year.

The figure is alarming and the impact is devastating, particularly for women and children who are disproportionately exposed to the harmful smoke.

Respiratory illness, heart problems and eye damage are just a few of the serious conditions that can develop from prolonged exposure to pollutants released by firewood and charcoal.

It is for this reason that The Chronicle supports awareness campaigns on the health hazards of the use of firewood or charcoal. We, therefore, commend the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), which has been educating the public on the need to transition from firewood to using Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

We have been made aware of a campaign on LPG as an alternative to firewood and charcoal by the NPA, collaborating with the Local Council of Churches in Kpando, Volta Region, a campaign we fully support on health grounds.

The public education on the use of LPG should continue to go down to the remote communities, especially those who assume that it is expensive to use gas.

We will suggest that the NPA, while advocating for the use of LPG, particularly in the remote communities, should consider a programme to support locals to own cylinders to start with.

We even think that the government, through its cylinder recirculation module, can give cylinders to the people at a low or no cost, knowing that under the programme, a person will not use the same cylinder all the time.

It is changed anytime you go to buy gas. Now, should the government subsidise the cost of cylinders or if possible, give them out for free, and with the cylinder recirculation module, people can buy the gas at a cheaper amount, which may attract more people to use gas, especially on health grounds.

Experts say LPG burns cleanly, emitting far fewer harmful pollutants compared to firewood and charcoal. The smoke from firewood and charcoal contains dangerous chemicals like carbon monoxide and carcinogens, which can lead to respiratory diseases, heart problems and eye damage.

By switching to LPG, households can significantly reduce their risk of these health conditions. The WHO links exposure to traditional biomass smoke to over four million premature deaths globally every year. By using LPG, people avoid inhaling toxic fumes, reducing their chances of developing serious respiratory diseases.

The reliance on firewood and charcoal leads to deforestation, which contributes to the loss of biodiversity and exacerbates soil erosion. Using LPG, a cleaner and more efficient fuel, reduces the pressure on forests, helping to conserve natural ecosystems.

We have learnt that LPG burns more efficiently than firewood or charcoal, producing lower greenhouse gas emissions of carbon dioxide and methane, contributing to mitigating climate change.

Switching to LPG also helps in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 3, 7, 13, and 15, which deal with good health and well-being, affordable and clean energy, climate change, and life on land, respectively.

The Chronicle is of the opinion that some households continue to use firewood and charcoal for many reasons. These excuses may include a lack of public education on the dangers associated with the use of the traditional methods. We, therefore, advocate for intensive and sustained public education, as it is crucial in reorienting the minds of some people.

We also think that the cylinder, which is the first cost to using LPG, should be subsidised if not given for free, and the gas itself should be more accessible and affordable, especially to those in rural areas. This can be achieved through policy support and infrastructure development to serve the people.

It is our view that addressing clean cooking goes beyond switching fuels, as it requires a comprehensive strategy as we have mentioned above, as well as financial support and safety measures.

Bawumia fires NDC: Secure Your Majority From Voters … And NOT In Parliament

0
Veep Mahamudu Bawumia

The presidential candidate for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has told the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its parliamentary caucus that majority seats are won at the polling stations and not in parliament.

As such, he has suggested to the NDC to focus its energy on securing the seats from the thumbs of the voters and not the tactics they are playing in the House to be in the majority.

Addressing a mammoth rally at Nkawkaw, in the Eastern Region, on Saturday, October 19, 2024 vice president Dr. Bawumia poked the NDC, following the ruling of the Supreme Court to stay the execution of the communication by Speaker Bagbin’s last Thursday that four seats were vacant.

“I want to let the NDC know that if they want majority in Parliament, they should come to the polling station. They should come to the constituency, win an election and then go to Parliament. You cannot sit in Parliament and manufacture a majority for yourself. We will meet them at the constituencies and we will meet them at the polling stations,” Dr. Bawumia further remarked.

24 HOUR

In a subtle mockery of the 24-hour economy policy announcement by the NDC and the duration of their being declared majority from last Thursday’s announcement by Speaker Bagbin and the ruling by the Supreme Court the following day, Dr. Bawumia made fun of the NDC MPs that they were majority for just 24 hours.

He said that was the shortest term of a political majority he had ever witnessed in the world, a statement that saw the NPP supporters at the rally grounds cheering.

“Two days ago, they did something in Parliament, after which they claimed they are the majority in Parliament. I believe you have heard it. They only had a 24-hour majority, the shortest-living majority that I know of in history,” the Vice President Bawumia said.

CANVASS FO VOTE

However, he used the opportunity to urge the supporters to vote for him and the Nkawkaw NPP parliamentary candidate and by extension all other NPP candidates on December 7.

“It is very important that you vote for me, Dr. Bawumia, but it is even more important that you vote for Joseph Frimpong because we want the parliamentary majority,” he said.

BACKGROUND

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, on Thursday, 17 October 2024 in a communication to the House, following a statement by the Minority Leader, Cassiel Ato Forson, declared four parliamentary seats vacant.

Peter Yaw Kwakye-Ackah, MP for Amenfi Central in the Western Region, Andrew Asiamah Amoako, MP for Fomena, Ashanti Region (Independent), Kwadwo Asante, MP for Suhum, Eastern Region (NPP), and Cynthia Morrison, MP for Agona West, Central Region, were the MPs affected by the announcement of the Speaker.

However, lawyers of the Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin proceeded to the Supreme Court on Friday, 18 October 2024, with an ex parte application, praying the apex court of the land to stay the enforcement of the announcement by the Speaker.

A five-member Supreme Court panel presided over by the Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, granted the ex-parte motion and ruled that the four MPs should be allowed to continue their roles as representatives of their constituents in the House until the final determination of the matter seeking an interpretation of Article 97 (1)(g) and (h) of the 1992 constitution.

DECISIVE MAJORITY

Meanwhile, the presidential candidate of the NPP, Dr. Bawumia, at the Nkawkaw rally assured the supporters that the message of the elephant party had resonated well with the masses.

According to him, after campaigning in over 200 constituencies and per the data available to him, if elections were held that day, he was sure the NPP would have a decisive majority seats.

However, he encouraged the NPP supporters not to be complacent but to keep the momentum the election was over, and by the dawn of December 7, the NPP will have a majority of parliamentary seats.

“What I can assure you from what I know after visiting over 200 constituencies, campaigning on the ground, and seeing the data is that if we were voting today, the NPP would have a decisive majority—not a majority but a decisive majority in Parliament,” Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia added.

Why Supreme Court Overturned Bagbin’s Orders

0
Speaker 'Togbe' Bagbin

The Supreme Court of Ghana has temporarily overturned Speaker Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin’s ruling, which barred four Members of Parliament (MPs) from representing their constituents and declared their seats vacant.

The apex court, accordingly, directed Parliament to recognise and allow the four affected MPs namely; Andrew Amoako Asiama, Independent MP for Fomena and Second Deputy Speaker, Cynthia Mamle Morrison, NPP MP for Agona West, Peter Yaw Kwakye-Ackah, NDC MP for Wassa Amenfi East and Kwadwo Asante, NPP MP for Suhum, to perform their duties.

Alban Bagbin, Speaker of Parliament

This decision follows the granting of an ex-parte application filed by the Majority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, praying the Court to stay the execution of Bagbin’s ruling declaring vacant the seats of four MPs and ordering the said MPs to vacate their seats in Parliament on account of his declaration.

Afenyo-Markin argued that Bagbin’s ruling would cause irreparable damage, citing potential harm to:

  1.      Parliament’s business, especially, committees chaired by majority members.
  2.     Government business due to minority members’ actions.
  3.      Government appropriation requiring parliamentary approval.
  4.     Constitutional rights of the four MPs and their constituents.
  5.      Supreme Court’s original and exclusive jurisdiction.

“By our understanding of Article 97 (1) (h), (g) the step taken by these four parliamentarians were meant for the 9th Parliament of Ghana coming in a different identity. It does not amount to crossing carpet in the current Parliament.

“The Speaker did not point to any communication from the MPs, they were not heard at all and so, their rights under rules of natural justice, the audi alteram partem rule and that of their constituents has been breached”, Afenyo-Markin’s strong argument as captured in the Supreme Court’s ruling, dated October 18, 2024.

Considering the gravity and urgency of the suit brought before the apex court by the Majority Leader, the Court has further directed the Speaker and the Attorney General, the defendants in the suit, to file their statements of case within seven (7) days, followed by a joint Memorandum of Issues within seven days of filing.

“On the balance of the law, exhibits and facts placed before us, we are satisfied that the duly elected representatives in question were not heard on the extremely critical issue raised”, noted the ruling by the five-member panel of Supreme Court Judges chaired by the Chief Justice, G.S. Torkornoo.

The other panel members were; M. Owusu, JSC, S.K.A. Asiedu, JSC, E.Y. Gaewu, JSC, and Y. Darko Asare, JSC.

The directive of the Supreme Court will remain in effect, not for the 10 days initially requested by the applicant, but until the court delivers its final ruling on the matter.

Meaning of ex-parte

An ex-parte application is a request or motion made to a court by one party without the presence or representation of the opposing party. Ex-parte applications are usually made in urgent or emergency situations where delay could cause harm or prejudice to the applicant.

The applicant must demonstrate that notice to the opposing party would frustrate the purpose of the application.

Speaker Bagbin, had on Thursday, October 17, 2024, in a ruling declared four parliamentary seats vacant, citing Article 97 of the 1992 Constitution as the basis of his decision. He made the declaration following a motion moved by the NDC MP for Tamale South and a former Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu.

Haruna Iddrisu in his motion invoked the constitutional provisions that mandate MPs who seek to switch their political affiliations or indicated their intention to contest their parliamentary seats as independent candidates to vacate their seats.

Walkout

However, Bagbin’s ruling was seen by the Majority Caucus as a breach of the constitution and usurpation of the authority of the Supreme Court.

In response, they staged a walkout from Parliament, protesting the Speaker’s ruling as unfair. Afenyo-Markin later told the Parliamentary Press Corps that their action was after both the Speaker and the Minority Members of the House had attempted to silence him as he sought to convey the Majority Caucus’ strong misgivings about the Speaker’s blatantly unconstitutional conduct.

Respect

Afenyo-Markin welcomed the Supreme Court’s ruling urging the Minority Caucus to take legal action if they have a strong case. He noted that the ruling affirmed the legal rights of the four MPs and, by extension, the democratic representation of their constituents.

“The court has determined the matter and has ordered the parties to file the necessary processes for the final determination of the matter. We expect our colleagues and all those involved in this matter to respect the law, including the right Honorable Speaker”, he noted.

He added “We are democrats. We don’t believe in violence. We don’t believe in mischief and unnecessary political chaos. We came to court believing that the court would do right and indeed the court has just done it. The rights of those MPs have been reinforced, as well as the rights of those constituents who elected them”.

Restore

Prior to the Supreme Court hearing, Afenyo-Markin vowed to take lawful action against the Speaker’s “unconstitutional conduct”, stressing the need to restore constitutional order and maintain parliamentary integrity.

NSS Is Now An Authority

0

The president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has emphasised the importance of fostering responsible citizens with a strong sense of patriotism.

Speaking at the official  launch of  the National Service Authority (NSA), which has been  established under the National Service Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1119), the president said “the dreams I have long envisioned for our youth and the future of our country are finally coming to fruition, with the establishment of the National Service Authority.”

The President revealed that the scheme saves the nation over GHS 3 billion annually in personnel costs, which he attributed to the significant difference between the salaries of National Service Personnel and regular public service personnel.

“This transformation is not just about mobilising graduates, it’s about creating a cost-effective system that benefits our nation,” he asserted.

With more than 150,000 graduates deployed annually, the National Service Authority is expected to bridge developmental gaps across various sectors, including education, health and infrastructure.

This massive deployment has proven invaluable to Ghana’s socio-economic development. The President remarked, “The savings generated from this initiative allow us to invest more in essential services and infrastructure for our communities.”

Tracing the history of the National Service Scheme, President Akufo-Addo noted its origins in Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s Builders Brigade and its evolution through various governments.

He expressed confidence that this new Authority would continue to enhance the contributions of National Service Personnel to the nation.

“It is our hope that the new structure will empower our youth and provide them with employability skills that make them assets in the job market,” he explained.

To ensure a seamless transition from education to employment for service personnel, the President announced that the National Service Authority would operate under the Ministry of Labour and Employment. This strategic alignment aims to facilitate better integration of graduates into the workforce, a move that the President believes will yield positive outcomes for the country.

President Akufo-Addo reiterated his commitment to supporting the National Service Authority in its mission.

“I will remain a patron of this initiative, ensuring that we provide the necessary resources and guidance for its success,” he promised.

Quarm-LMI Consortium Selected To Complete Saglemi Housing Project

0
Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah

The Ministry of Works and Housing says Quarm-LMI Consortium has been selected as the preferred developer to complete the Saglemi Housing project in the Greater Accra Region.

This follows the conclusion of negotiations and the receipt of a report on negotiations from a government team comprising representatives of the Ministry of Works and Housing, Office of the Attorney General & Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Finance and Deloitte, with technical evaluation support from the Ghana Institute of Surveyors.

A statement from the ministry said bids from Quarm-LMI Consortium and Broll Ghana had been shortlisted from an initial five consortium consisting of LMI, with interests in industrial park development and real estate, and QUARM with expertise in Logistics, Utilities and Finance.

The developer will now be formally procured to complete the 1,506 Saglemi housing units, which will then be sold to the general public, with a focus on salaried employees and workers’ unions.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Ministry reiterates that the Saglemi project has not been sold to the private developer. The developer has been selected to finance and complete the project. Both the government and the developer will recover their investments when the project is completed.”

The statement also quoted the Minister for Works and Housing, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, as promising to provide further updates as the project progresses.

Rise of Armwrestling is remarkable, corporate institutions must support for development –Prez Akufo Addo

0

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has praised the Ghana Armwrestling Federation (GAF) for the sport’s remarkable growth, calling on corporate Ghana to support its continued development.

In a meeting with the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, President Akufo-Addo expressed admiration for the its rapid progress, having pushed Ghanaians onto the various committees of the international federation and won a significant number of medals for Ghana since 2016, with a brilliant outing during the recently held African Games in Accra.

“Armwrestling has made tremendous strides in Ghana and it is heart warming to see our athletes excel internationally,” President Akufo-Addo said.

“The GAF deserves commendation for its tireless efforts, especially for saving Ghana during the African Games.”

The President highlighted Armwrestling’s potential to promote healthy lifestyles, youth development and national pride.

“Armwrestling embodies the values of discipline, perseverance and teamwork,” President Akufo-Addo emphasised.

“It is essential we nurture this sport to benefit our youth and nation and I urge corporate and multinational institutions to support or partner Armwrestling, through sponsorships of development programs and participation in competitions.”

I wholeheartedly commend Charles Osei Asibey, an astute journalist with many portfolios and his board for the sturdy rise since 2016.

“Armwrestling is traditional but I didn’t know it was a sport we practice in Ghana, until I started reading about it in the dailies”, Nana Addo said.

“I appeal to corporate Ghana to join forces with the GAF because government alone cannot make it possible,” President Akufo-Addo said.

“Together, we can create a thriving Armwrestling ecosystem benefiting our youth, promoting healthy lifestyles and showcasing Ghanaian excellence.”

H.E. Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo also praised Grace Minta for her super performance and ambassadorial role in the many achievements.

GAF President, Charles Osei Asibey, thanked the President for his endorsement and said the GAF leadership is proudly on course the federation’s goal is to make Armwrestling a household name and the sport of choice in Ghana.

“We’re committed to encourage participation, developing grassroots talent and producing both continental and global champions,” Osei Asibey said.

The GAF President expressed gratitude to the government and institutions like SES Ghana, Kofikrom Pharmacy Limited, Twellium Industries, National Health Insurance Authority, Nguvu Mining Limited, Ghana Gas Company, ABL Eagle Extra Stout and many others who have invested in the development of Armwrestling

The President tasked the sports minister to work with the federation in recognising Armwrestling’s potential for national development.

Armwrestling will be given a training center and a Secretariat for Africa will be situated in Accra.

Present at a meeting were the Chief of Staff, Madam Frema Opare, Minister for Youth & Sports, Mustapha Ussif, Mr. Ibrahim Adjei and other members of the office of the President, Pharm. Dr. Kofi Addo-Agyekum, Vice President for Ghana and Africa Armwrestling, DCOP Lydia Yaakor Donkor, Godfrey William Amarteifio and Husseini Addy, all board members of GAF and some members of the Goldens Arms team.
