Turkish strikes in Syria cut water to one million people

There is not enough water to meet the needs of everyone in Hassakeh

Turkish air strikes in drought-struck north-east Syria have cut off access to electricity and water for more than a million people, in what experts say may be a violation of international law.

Turkey carried out more than 100 attacks between October 2019 and January 2024 on oil fields, gas facilities and power stations in the Kurdish-held Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), according to data collated by the BBC World Service.

The attacks have added to the humanitarian crisis in a region reeling from a years-long civil war and four years of extreme drought exacerbated by climate change.

Water had already been scarce, but attacks on electricity infrastructure in October last year shut off power to the region’s main water station, in Alouk, and it has not been working since. On two visits there, the BBC witnessed people struggling to get water.

Turkey said it had targeted the “sources of income and capabilities” of Kurdish separatist groups it regards as terrorists.

It said that it was well known there was a drought in the area, adding that poor water management and neglected infrastructure had made things worse.

The AANES has previously accused Turkey of seeking to “destroy our people’s existence”.

More than a million people in the Hassakeh province who once got their water from Alouk now rely on deliveries of water pumped from around 12 miles (20km) away.

People living in the region have been caught up not only in Syria’s ongoing civil war but also in Turkey’s conflict with Kurdish-led forces, who established the AANES in 2018 after they – with support from the US-led coalition – drove the Islamic State (IS) group out of the region. Coalition forces are still stationed there to prevent a resurgence of IS.

Brazil arrests soldiers over ‘plot to kill’ President Lula in 2022

President Lula

Police in Brazil have arrested five people suspected of planning to kill Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva shortly before he was sworn in as president.

Four of those detained on Tuesday are soldiers and one is a police officer, local media reported.

The five were allegedly part of a plot to kill President-elect Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, on 15 December 2022, just over two weeks before the presidential inauguration.

Lula was elected in October 2022, narrowly defeating incumbent Jair Bolsonaro, who never publicly accepted defeat. A week after Lula was sworn in, Bolsonaro supporters stormed Congress, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace and vandalised the buildings.

Police eventually cleared the buildings of the rioters and detained thousands.

Investigations into the events of 8 January 2023 as well as previous alleged attempts to prevent Lula from being sworn in have been under way since.

However, this is the first time that police have revealed an alleged attempt to assassinate Lula.

Speaking after news of the arrests broke, Social Communications Minister Paulo Pimenta said that the alleged plot to assassinate Lula and Alckmin had almost gone ahead.

Brazilian news site G1 said that what was particularly worrying was that four of those arrested were active members of the military and the fifth a serving member of the police force.

AFP news agency quoted a federal police source as saying that the four soldiers “were arrested in Rio, where they were participating in the security operation for the G20 leaders’ meeting” currently under way in the Brazilian city.

Ukraine fires US-supplied longer-range missiles into Russia for first time

The US signalled Ukraine had permission to fire the Atacms into Russia

Ukraine has fired US-supplied longer-range missiles at a target inside Russian territory for the first time, a day after Washington gave its permission for such attacks.

US officials confirmed use of the Army Tactical Missile System (Atacms) to CBS news, the BBC’s US partner.

Russia’s defence ministry earlier said the strike targeted the Bryansk region bordering Ukraine to the north on Tuesday morning.

Five missiles were shot down and one damaged, with its fragments causing a fire at a military facility in the region, the ministry said.

Russia’s foreign minister Sergey Lavrov accused Washington of trying to escalate the conflict.

“That Atacms was used repeatedly overnight against Bryansk Region is of course a signal that they [the US] want escalation,” he said.

“And without the Americans, use of these high-tech missiles, as Putin has said many times, is impossible.”

He said Russia would “proceed from the understanding” that the missiles were operated by “American military experts”.

“We will be taking this as a renewed face of the western war against Russia and we will react accordingly,” he told a press conference at the G20 in Rio de Janeiro.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Kremlin approved changes to Russia’s nuclear doctrine, setting out new conditions under which the country would consider using its arsenal.

It now says an attack from a non-nuclear state, if backed by a nuclear power, will be treated as a joint assault on Russia. Credit: bbc.com

Pressure group calls for more security at Agogo

Dr George Akuffo Dampare - IGP

A pressure group by the name, Concerned Youth Association of Asante Akyem North Constituency, has called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr George Akuffo Dampare, to strengthen security in the area, ahead of the December 7 general elections.

At a press conference held in Accra on Friday, November 16, 2024 the group expressed concerns over alleged intimidating tactics targeting Independent parliamentary candidate, Ohene Kwame Frimpong.

The group warned that tensions are rising in the constituency, historically known for peaceful elections.

“Asante Akyem North has always had free, fair and peaceful elections. But with the way tensions are escalating, we urge the IGP to intervene quickly to ensure peace and order,” said Samuel Osei Bonsu, Greater Accra branch chairman of the Concerned Youth.

Mr. Bonsu said their candidate’s popularity, due to his provision of development infrastructure in the area, has resulted in his campaign team facing “incessant attacks”, and emphasised the need for security to protect him.

The Asante Akyem North parliamentary race features three main candidates: Lawyer Andy Appiah Kubi of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kofi Asamoah of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Independent candidate Ohene Kwame Frimpong.

Tensions reportedly flared late Tuesday when, according to Mr. Bonsu, one of their opponent’s campaign team allegedly attacked Frimpong’s supporters in Brantuo, Agogo, leading to a police report.

Adding to the allegations, Alfred Kwasi Agyei, an executive member of the Concerned Youth presented audio evidence, pointing fingers at certain individuals in government.

The Concerned Youth Association urged the authorities to ensure a level playing field and prioritise peace.

“We call on the authorities to act swiftly to provide adequate security for all candidates, as peace is paramount in the upcoming elections,” Mr Bonsu stated.

MESTI Endorses Finance Ministry’s Green Taxonomy Initiative

MESTI

Director of Environment at the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), Dr Peter Justice Derry, has highlighted the positive impact the recently launched Green Finance Taxonomy will have on the nation’s strategy to mobilise resources to support green investment.

Speaking at a meeting organised by the Finance Ministry on the sidelines of the ongoing COP 29 in Baku, he commended the Ministry of Finance for the initiative, nothing that “this will prevent Greenwashing and this is why the Ministry of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation fully endorses this initiative”.

Greenwashing is the act of making false or misleading statements about the environmental benefits of a product or practice. This is a way for companies to continue or expand their pollution, as well as related harmful behaviours, while gaming the system or profiting off well-intentioned, sustainably minded consumers.

The Director of Environment cited several instances where MESTI had turn down project documents because thorough assessment of these projects methodologies and baselines revealed clear instances of Greenwashing.

“So MESTI will use this Green Finance Taxonomy launched by the Ministry of Finance to revise existing policies and frameworks to guide our selection for green investment in Ghana and help reform our own architecture towards attracting green investment,” he assured.

He later called on relevant institutions such as the National Development Planning Commission and other regulatory agencies to institutionalise policies and legislations to back the main objectives of the Green Finance Taxonomy to “ensure effective industry compliance and prevent Greenwashing”.

Dr Derry again argued that while climate change issues remain urgent, environmental policies must be broadened to address pollution and biodiversity issues as well.

“Our approach shouldn’t be narrowly defined by climate alone” He stated. “We need frameworks that encompass all environmental concerns festering sustainable development across multiple fronts”.

The Ministry of Finance launched the first phase of Green Finance Taxonomy to guide investments towards sustainable and climate-resilient projects.

Green Taxonomy refers to the classification system that helps to identify and classify investments as green based on their alignment with specific environmental objectives and targets.

Ridge Hospital Opens First Bone Marrow Transplant Unit

0
The Greater Accra Regional Hospital

The Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge) has inaugurated a state-of-the-art Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) unit to address complex health conditions, including Leukemia, Breast Cancer, Colon Cancer, Sickle Cell disease, Arthritis and various Neurological disorders.

The facility, the first of its kind in Ghana, and only the second in Sub-Saharan Africa, promises revolutionary advancements in regenerative medicine.

The unit was formally opened yesterday, in Accra, by Dr. Pradeep V. Mahajan, Chairman and Managing Director of STRRX Bioscience Solutions PVT LTD.

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Mahajan praised the groundbreaking nature of the facility, stating it introduces advanced medical technologies comparable to global standards at accessible costs.

The BMT unit will not only focus on treating life-threatening conditions, but will also introduce innovative solutions for joint regeneration, eliminating the need for repeated surgeries.

Dr. Mahajan explained, “We are bringing a technology where joints can regenerate without surgery, cuts or anesthesia. This ensures patients can maintain the same joint for a lifetime.”

Additionally, the facility will cater for children with neurological disorders such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), Cerebral Palsy, Epilepsy and Down Syndrome.

“This is a significant step for families in West Africa facing such challenges, as this Center will offer hope and solutions,” he added.

Dr. Mahajan emphasised that the technologies introduced would also support precision medicine, tailoring treatments to individual patient needs rather than generalised protocols.

Research and Training Hub

Prof George Awuku-Asare, a leading Scientist at the unit, underscored the facility’s potential to become a hub for research and training in West Africa.

He noted that rigorous scientific processes would ensure the growth and infusion of healthy cells to regenerate damaged tissues.

“This facility is not only about treatment but also about advancing local capacity. It will serve as a training ground for African Scientists and Medical Professionals, helping to retain talent within the continent,” Prof. Awuku-Asare said.

The establishment of the BMT unit positions Ghana as a regional leader in advanced medical care, potentially attracting patients from across West Africa and beyond.

It also marks a significant milestone in reducing the dependency on overseas treatment for life-threatening conditions.

In addition to regenerative and therapeutic applications, the unit will incorporate cosmetic treatments and stem cell research, paving the way for further innovations in healthcare.

The project is expected to enhance Ghana’s medical infrastructure and bring hope to patients facing conditions previously deemed untreatable locally.

The facility has already begun operations, with experts committed to delivering cutting-edge care while advancing scientific discovery in the region.

How Walking More Could Add More Years to Your Life

0
Walking More Could Add More Years to Your Life

Walking is a great way to improve or maintain your overall health. Just 30 minutes every day can increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce excess body fat, and boost muscle power and endurance.

It can also reduce your risk of developing conditions such as heart diseasetype 2 diabetesosteoporosis and some cancers.

Unlike some other forms of exercise, walking is free and doesn’t require any special equipment or training.

Physical activity does not have to be vigorous or done for long periods in order to improve your health.

Walking is low impact, requires minimal equipment, can be done at any time of day and can be performed at your own pace. You can get out and walk without worrying about the risks associated with some more vigorous forms of exercise.

Walking is also a great form of physical activity for people who are overweightelderly, or who haven’t exercised in a long time.

Walking for fun and fitness isn’t limited to strolling by yourself around local neighbourhood streets. There are various clubs, venues and strategies you can use to make walking an enjoyable and social part of your lifestyle.

Research

Stepping up your activity level could add some serious gains to your lifespan, especially if you’re among the many Americans who fall short on exercise.

In the U.S., the least active 25% of the population over 40 could add 11 years to their average life expectancy if they were as physically active as the top 25%, according to a new study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.

And if all Americans over 40 were as physically active as the top 25% of the population, the average U.S. life expectancy would increase by five years, the study found.

“Our findings suggest that [physical activity] provides substantially larger health benefits than previously thought, which is due to the use of more precise means of measuring [it],” researchers from the Griffith University School of Medicine in Queensland, Australia, said in a news release.

The findings are based on a predictive model that estimates the impact of different levels of physical activity on life expectancy.

Researchers looked at activity levels for 36,000 Americans over 40 in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and mortality data from the CDC. They converted all forms of exercise into walking minutes.

Physical activity levels were broken down into four groups: The least active people walked about 50 minutes daily, the next group walked about 80 minutes daily, the third group walked about 110 minutes daily, and the most active group walked about 160 minutes daily.

Of the four groups, the least active people would have the most to gain in life expectancy. Each extra hour of walking would add almost six hours of life, the study said.

The research team acknowledged that it’s not easy to persuade people to increase their activity levels. Governments can help by encouraging physical activity.

“Infrastructure measures that encourage active transport, walkable neighbourhoods as well and green spaces might be promising approaches to increase [physical activity] and resultant healthy life expectancy at the population level,” the study concluded.

Other studies have linked exercise and increased lifespans. A study published earlier this year said that following a healthy lifestyle – which includes regular physical activity – can increase life expectancy, even for people with a high genetic risk of a short lifespan.

Ruben Amorim oversees first Man United training session

Ruben Amorim

Ruben Amorim took charge of his first training session as Manchester United manager on Monday.

Amorim was confirmed as the man to succeed Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford back on November 1 but he did not start his new job until November 11 as he served a notice period at former club Sporting Lisbon.

The 39-year-old is widely regarded as one of Europe’s top coaches and he finally got to work at United’s Carrington training ground this week.

Amorim did not have a full squad of first-team players to work with because many of his top stars were on international duty.

However, the likes of Marcus Rashford, Kobbie MainooCasemiroLuke Shaw and Leny Yoro all took part in Monday’s session.

Amorim put his players through a series of drills and also set up a practice match. During the session, Amorim appeared to select his strongest available team against a young opposition. Amorim used a 3-4-3 formation during the majority of his 231 games in charge of Sporting and it appears as though he is keen to stick with that system.

Footage from Monday’s training session was shared via United’s social media channels and it left eagle-eyed fans intrigued by what they saw.

One fan, an X (formerly Twitter) user with the handle ‘@utdrobbo’, was adamant that he had worked out the exact line-up of Amorim’s apparent ‘Team A’ on Monday.

After studying various clips, he deemed that Amorim had gone with Yoro, Jonny Evans and Shaw as his back three.

The midfield four was seemingly Antony, Casemiro, Mainoo and Tyrell Malacia, with Amad Diallo, Rashford and Mason Mount as the three most attacking players.

Many United fans responded to @utdrobbo, commanding him on his research, while multiple comments welcomed the idea of Rashford playing centrally as a No 9.

It is highly unlikely that the 10 outfield players who teamed up in training will all start against Ipswich on Sunday in Amorim’s first game in charge.

Deschamps ‘will call Mbappe and discuss his future as France captain’

0
Didier Deschamps

Didier Deschamps will reportedly call up Kylian Mbappe and discuss his future as France captain after the striker was left out of their recent squad.

The Real Madrid superstar, who had been an integral part of Deschamps’ side since winning the World Cup in 2018, was not involved during the international breaks in October and November.

Mbappe

Initially, he had been injured and elected to focus on his recovery rather than join up with the side. However, for the latest squad, Deschamps explained it was a ‘one-off choice’ to snub the forward.

Now, reports suggest that Deschamps has plans to speak with the Real Madrid star and discuss his future as the France captain – as his international career hits yet another obstacle.

According to L’Equipe, the head coach intends to talk to Mbappe to find whether the burden of captaincy has become too heavy or not.

In Mbappe’s absence over the two international breaks, three players – N’Golo Kante, Aurelien Tchouameni and Ibrahimi Konate – have all rotated the armband.

The outlet further claim that Les Bleus staff were left particularly impressed by the leadership qualities shown by Liverpool defender Konate.

Konate impressed so much that he’s been earmarked as a potential future captain of the national side, as long as he’s able to secure a starting place in the line-up.

The 25-year-old wore the armband on Sunday night as Les Bleus breezed past Italy 3-1 in their Nations League clash – thanks to a brace from Adrien Rabiot and an own-goal from Guglielmo Vicario.

Earlier this month, speaking after announcing his squad, Deschamps said: ‘I had a couple of talks with Mbappe, and I took the decision to leave him out this time.

‘What I can tell you are these two things: One, that Kylian wanted to come. And two, it’s not the extra sporting problems that come into play since the presumption of innocence exists and must exist. It’s a one-off choice for this gathering.’

According to L’Equipe, sources close to Mbappe have challenged Deschamps’ claim, insisting that the situation is ‘a lot more complex’.

Federer pays tribute to Nadal for ‘epic career’

Roger Federer bids Rafael Nadal emotional farewell

Roger Federer says Rafael Nadal “made the whole tennis world proud” during his “epic career” as he paid tribute to his former rival before his retirement.

Nadal, a 22-time Grand Slam champion, will bring an end to his illustrious career aged 38 after representing Spain at the Davis Cup Finals in Malaga this week.

Federer, who retired in 2022 with 20 Grand Slams, won 16 matches and lost 24 – including an epic final at Wimbledon in 2008 – in the 40 times he faced Nadal.

“As you get ready to graduate from tennis, I’ve got a few things to share before I maybe get emotional,” wrote 43-year-old Federer on Instagram.

“Let’s start with the obvious: you beat me – a lot. More than I managed to beat you. You challenged me in ways no-one else could.

“On clay, it felt like I was stepping into your backyard, and you made me work harder than I ever thought I could just to hold my ground.

Federer added that Nadal made him “reimagine” his game, to the extent that the Swiss changed the size of his racquet head.

Both players were in tears as Federer bowed out of the game.

“Sharing the court with you that night, and sharing those tears, will forever be one of the most special moments of my career.”

He added: “Rafa, I know you’re focused on the last stretch of your epic career.

“We will talk when it’s done. For now, I just want to congratulate your family and team, who all played a massive role in your success.

“And I want you to know that your old friend is always cheering for you, and will be cheering just as loud for everything you do next.”
