New Takoradi Beach gets a boost for environmental cleanliness

The spirit of giving during Christmas has been largely material possessions, often overlooking sustainability.

According to Saviour Kwaku Adzika, popularly known as Corp Sayvee, founder of the CorpNation Foundation, this trend has harmful implications for the environment.

He observed that even simple gifts are frequently packaged with excessive synthetic materials, adding to environmental degradation.

Challenging this norm, a heartwarming act of sustainable giving was spearheaded by Markus Hilger, Western Regional Coordinator of the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ Ghana), alongside his children, Joshua and Noah.

Following a family discussion, they decided to present a meaningful gift to the people of New Takoradi by organising a beach cleanup, educating the community on sanitation, and donating essential cleaning tools.

The initiative began with a community cleanup exercise at the New Takoradi beach, during which participants cleared debris and discussed the importance of maintaining clean beaches.

Afterward, Mr. Hilger and his family donated a range of cleaning equipment, including three wheelbarrows, five rakes, one shovel, two spades, five standing brooms, and ten litter-picking rods.

These tools aim to empower the community to sustain regular cleanup efforts and promote environmental responsibility.

Speaking to the gathering, Mr. Hilger highlighted his motivation for the initiative.

“I am not from Ghana, but I live in Ghana, and that alone is reason enough to support this cause. I look forward to seeing the continuation of what we have started, with the community taking ownership of environmental sustainability,” he stated.

This act of giving exemplifies how thoughtful, sustainable gifts can have a lasting impact on communities.

The New Takoradi community is now equipped and inspired to uphold environmental cleanliness, setting an example for others to follow during this festive season and beyond.

Mr. Adzika commended the effort, emphasizing that gifts like these reflect the true spirit of giving—benefiting both people and the planet.

Award-winning Kumawood actor Kwadwo Lil Win Nkansah has captured hearts after a video of him gifting his mother a house surfaced on social media.

In recent months, the renowned Ghanaian movie star frequently shared updates on the construction of his mother, Madam Adwoa Offe’s, new home. Lil Win had previously gifted her an eight-bedroom house in 2017 to celebrate her 70th birthday. At the time, he explained that the gesture was a heartfelt token of appreciation for her sacrifices in helping him achieve his dream of becoming an actor in the Ghanaian movie industry.

Foreign leaders who attended Trump’s inauguration

President Donald Trump waves after taking the oath of office

United States President-elect Donald Trump was sworn into office for a second term on Monday, January 20 –as the 47th US president.

Both Trump and Vice President-elect JD Vance are set to take the oath of office and begin a new administration amid a long day of celebrations that included musical performances and a parade.

However, unlike traditional inaugurations of US presidents, this one included a host of foreign leaders, including Trump’s close allies and even some of his rivals, an estimated 500,000 guests were expected in total.

Who was invited?

Several heads of state, notably right-wing or populist leaders allied with Trump, have been invited, but so have some of his rivals. Notably, they are:

  • Argentina’s President Javier Milei: Milei has confirmed his attendance. Trump once hailed the far-right leader as a man who can “make Argentina great again” and, in December, welcomed Milei at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida.
  • Chinese President Xi Jinping: Trump invited Xi to the ceremony in December, a move that his spokespeople say signals his readiness to interact with his Chinese counterpart, even amid a looming trade war. Xi will not attend, however, Vice President Han Zheng will.
  • Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni: Meloni, of the far-right Brothers of Italy party, visited Mar-a-Lago in January. Her office says she is likely to attend if her schedule permits.
  • Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban: Populist leader Orban is a close Trump ally and has said he believes the president-elect will end Russia’s war on Ukraine. He will not make it due to a state address, according to local media.
  • Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro: the far-right politician nicknamed the “Trump of the Tropics” has been invited, but will not attend because he is banned from travelling.
  • Former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawieck, who recently became leader of the right-wing European Conservatives and Reformists party in the EU parliament, will also attend.

Who was not invited?

  • UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has not been invited, his office confirmed on Thursday. However, the far-right politician, Nigel Farage of the Reform UK party, is invited and will be present.
  • Germany’s President Olaf Scholz, who leads the EU’s largest economy, has also been snubbed. An invitation has, however, been extended to Alice Weidel, leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany party (AfD), who will be represented by co-leader Tino Chrupalla.
  • French President Emmanuel Macron was not invited, although Macron and Trump have friendly relations. Instead, French far-right politician Eric Zemmour of the Reconquest party will be present.

TikTok is back online in US, its ultimate fate still lies in Trump’s hands

0

TikTok is now accessible again in the United States. Just how long that lasts will likely depend on incoming President Donald Trump.

TikTok restored access for American users midday on Sunday after a whirlwind 14 hours during which the app temporarily shut itself down. TikTok credited Trump for bringing the app back, after he pledged to sign an executive order to delay enforcement of the law that had required the app to spin off from its China-based parent company ByteDance or be banned as of Sunday.

“I will issue an executive order on Monday to extend the period of time before the law’s prohibitions take effect, so that we can make a deal to protect our national security,” Trump said in a Truth Social post Sunday. He added that he would not hold TikTok’s technology partners — including Apple, Google and cloud computing company Oracle — liable for continuing to make the app available until he signed the order.

It was that reassurance that he wouldn’t fine its tech partners, TikTok said, that allowed it to bring back US users’ access.

The app’s return was welcomed by many of its 170 million American users.

South Africa police launch manhunt for illegal mining ‘kingpin’

South Africa police launch manhunt

South Africa’s police have launched a manhunt for an alleged “kingpin”, who is accused of controlling operations at an abandoned gold mine where 78 corpses were discovered last week.

The police force said officials had helped James Neo Tshoaeli, a Lesotho national also known as Tiger, to escape after he was pulled up from the mine in Stilfontein.

More than 240 illegal miners were brought up alive from the mine after it had been blockaded for months by the police.

Officers had cut off food and water supplies in an attempt to force them out of the mine.

Some of the miners accused Mr Tshoaeli of being responsible for “deaths, assault and torture” underground, a police statement said on Monday.

Mr Tshoaeli is also alleged to have hoarded and kept food away from the other miners, many of whom appeared emaciated and weak when they surfaced from the shaft.

Police commissioner Patrick Asaneng warned that “heads will roll” once they find the officials who helped Mr Tshoaeli escape, the police statement said.

In a candid appearance on South African channel Newzroom Afrika, police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe said the force was “disappointed” and “embarrassed”.

Ms Mathe said an investigation into the escape has been launched and that the probe would start with the police “looking internally”.

After months when access to the mine shaft in Stilfontein was blocked, a court ordered the government to facilitate last week’s rescue operation.

Trump plan to deport migrants a ‘disgrace’, says Pope

0
Pope Francis

Pope Francis has said that Donald Trump’s plans to deport illegal migrants from the US would be a “disgrace” if they materialised.

Speaking to an Italian TV programme from his Vatican residence, Francis said that if the plans went ahead, Trump would make “poor wretches that don’t have anything foot the bill”.

“That’s not right. That’s not how you solve problems,” he said.

Trump has promised to begin the largest expulsion of undocumented immigrants in US history soon after he takes office.

In a message to Trump shared on Monday, Pope Francis offered him “cordial greetings” and urged him to lead a society with “no room for hatred, discrimination or exclusion” and promote “peace and reconciliation among peoples”.

The Pope is known to hold the issue of migrants dear. During a public audience last August, he said that “systematically working by all means to drive away migrants” was “a grave sin”.

In 2016, before the first presidential election won by Trump, Pope Francis said “a person who thinks only about building walls… and not of building bridges, is not Christian”.

Francis and Trump later met when Trump and his family visited Rome in 2017.

Former Ho MCE threatens legal action over false claims against him

0
Mr Richard Divine Bosson, former Ho MCE

Mr Richard Divine Bosson, the immediate past Municipal Chief Executive Officer (MCE) of Ho, has threatened legal action over viral claims that a ten-unit housing project in the city was his personal property.

A video circulating on social media shows the buildings neatly lined up and at lentil level, and with the alleged narrator, Mr Stanley NelvisGlatey, a National Democratic Congress Activist and Lecturer, alleging it was the private property of the MCE.

The voice is heard calling on the special asset recovery team, ‘Operation Recover All Loot’ (ORAL), set up by President Mahama to address alleged state capture, to investigate the housing project.

However, Mr Bosson, in a written response sighted by the GNA, has stated that the project was being undertaken by the Assembly to provide accommodation for staff.

According to the response, the said land for the project was donated by the traditional rulers at a public and well documented ceremony, where Dr. Archibald Yao Letsa, then Volta Regional Minister, TogbeHowusu XII, Awafiaga of Asogli State and others were present for the ground-breaking exercise.

The former MCE said in the statement, dated Saturday, January 18, 2025 that “The project aimed to alleviate the accommodation burden faced by Assembly staff and we collaborated with other state institutions to achieve this goal.

“Specifically, the land in question is owned by the Ghana Health Service and is currently occupied by the Nurses Training College and School of Hygiene.

“We engaged with the relevant stakeholders, including the Boards of the School of Hygiene and Nurses Training College, the Principals and the Lands Commission, to bring this project to fruition.

“Notably, there is a documented agreement in place that ensures the two institutions will also benefit from the facility, not just the Ho Municipal Assembly staff.”

He went on to state that “a sod-cutting ceremony was held to mark the commencement of the project and I encourage those with questions to verify the information through the aforementioned institutions.”

Mr Bosson said he considered the misinformation going round as a public deception as the matter was also bearing on his image as a public figure and, therefore, would pursue legal action.

“I’m concerned about the spread of misinformation and hope that we can rely on factual accounts to guide our understanding of this matter.

“Throughout my service, I have diligently worked for the betterment of Ho and Ghana, and I remain committed to transparency and accountability.

“I have instructed my lawyers to take immediate action to protect my reputation and clear my name,” he stated.

Meanwhile, a group calling itself the “Coalition of Volta Youth Against the Sale of Government Lands, has called on the President to extend the ORAL to various regions and districts in the country.

According to Stanley NelvisGlatey, the Convener of the coalition, state lands in the Volta Regional Capital had been lost to individuals, and therefore the Operation would be required in preserving the crucial assets for future use.
