Ophelia Wiredu adjudged 2023 Overall Best Kumasi Metro Teacher

Mrs Ophelia Wiredu of the State Experimental School has been adjudged the Overall Best Teacher by the Kumasi Metropolitan Directorate of Education. Mrs Wiredu takes home a plague and double deck fridge for her excellent performance and commitment to get the best out of students.

Mrs Ophelia Wiredu received the Award at the Teachers and Schools Awards ceremony organized by the Kumasi Metropolitan Directorate in collaboration with the Ghana Education Service (GES) in honour of outstanding teachers in the metropolis.

The theme for the occasion, which was held last week Friday, was “The role of the teacher in transforming Education”.

Mr David Oppong, the Metro Director of education explained that, the gesture was to show appreciation for the efforts teachers make in transforming the lives of people and to motivate them to do more and not to relent on their efforts to shape the lives of students.

According to him, teachers play an important role in the society, hence the need to always demonstrate as policy makers and stakeholders the need to encourage them.

He noted that it is not the Award that is important, but mentioning the name among the colleagues for the outstanding performance speaks a lot to motivate the teacher.

He pleaded with the teachers not to give up, though there are challenges the sector is striving to resolve and entreated them to help students, especially the beginners, to catch up in the learning process.

Mr Samuel Pyne, Mayor of Kumasi, commended the Metro Directorate for organizing such an initiative to motivate the outstanding teachers within the metropolis.

According to him, teachers play an important role intransforming lives of people and the society as a whole. He, therefore, stressed the need to encourage them to shape the minds of the young ones to change their mind-sets to positively impact society.

He stated that the government was committed to the transformation of education, hence building model schools and the introduction of Science, Technical, Engineering and Mathematics courses.

Mrs. Theodosia Jackson, as Guest Speaker, commended teachers for working hard spirit to transformation society and urged them to do more by investing knowledge and discipline in their students not only in the classroom, but outside the classroom as well.

She also lamented over the lazy attitude of some teachers and advised them to change and become a good example and role model to the young ones.

Sister Marian Antwi receiving the Best Headteacher Award

Sister Marian Antwi of St. Louis Basic Demonstration School received the Best Headteacher Award while Mr William Antwi also received the Best Non-teaching Staff Award with the Kumasi Anglican Senior High School (KASHS) receiving the Best Mathematics and Science quiz award.
