A 17-year old girl has been shot dead at a galamsey site at Nyame Adom-Kunsu in the Ahafo-Ano South District of the Ashanti region.Seven others sustained gunshot wounds.
Identified as Clementina Danso, the teenager was pronounced dead barely twenty minutes after she was rushed to the Mankranso Government Hospital for treatment.
Confirming the development to The Chronicle, the assembly member for Kunsu Nyame Adom, Felix Nkansah, disclosed to this paper that last week Friday, October 18, 2024, at about 11:00 am, he had a distress call that a number of people had been shot at a mining site being operated by some Chinese.
According to him,eight people were shot at by one of the security officers manning the site after the town folks went to their went there to collect the residual materials, which according to the assemblyman, was accepted practice between the operators of the mining site and the town people.
Nkansah continued that the teenager lost her life a few minutes after she was rushed to the Mankranso Government Hospital,adding that the rest are being treated at the emergency unit of the facility.Asked if any arrest had been made, he responded in the negative explaining he had lodged a complaint with the police, but the shooter had gone into hiding.
Quizzed about the conditions of those that are being treated, Felix Nkandah disclosed that doctors are treating them. He, however, indicated that two of those on admission had been referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital.
Reached on phone about the incident, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Ahafo Ano South-West, Joseph Bonsu Frimpong confirmed the development.According to Bonsu Frimpong, those that sustained gunshot wounds had been transferred to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for the removal of the pellets.
