Off-Duty Police Officer allegedly shoots man to death over fare

A Police Officer, General Constable Smith Gyeke, who was operating as a ride-hailing driver during his off-duty, has allegedly shot and killed one Stanley Ahadz, over confrontations on the fare, after a trip.

Though a statement from the Ghana Police Service did not detail how the incident happened, it said the suspect was arrested on Sunday, August 18, 2024.

According to the police, the incident occurred around 4:00 a.m. that day, at Koans Estate near Kuntunse in Accra, and reportedly resulted from a dispute over a fare.

The statement added that the body of the deceased has been sent to the Police Hospital mortuary for preservation and autopsy, while Constable Gyeke remains in police custody as investigations proceed.

However, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, and members of the Police Management Board (POMAB) have visited the family of Stanley Ahadz, who was allegedly shot by an off-duty police officer.

The visit is aimed to extend condolences and assure the family that a thorough investigation would be conducted, with a promise to hold the officer accountable.

In response to the tragedy, a police Clinical Psychologist and other officers have been assigned to support the grieving family.

The police have assured the public that the investigation will be conducted with the highest level of diligence to ensure justice is served.

OFF-DUTY POLICE OFFICER ARRESTED FOR ALLEGED MURDER IN ACCRA

The police have arrested a ride-hailing driver, who was later identified as an off-duty Police Officer, for allegedly shooting a male adult at Koans Estate, near Kuntunse, in Accra, on Sunday, 18th August, 2024.

The incident occurred around 4:00 a.m. on Sunday, following an alleged confrontation between the deceased, identified as Stanley Ahadzi and General Constable Smith Gyeke, over a disputed fare.

The body of the deceased is currently deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy, while the suspect is in Police custody as part of the investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare and members of the Police Management Board (POMAB) have visited the family of the deceased to commiserate with them and assured them that the incident will be fully investigated and the officer involved will be made to face justice.

A Police Clinical Psychologist and other officers have been assigned to the family to support them through this difficult time.
