Nsuaem, a once-bustling mining community in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem Municipality has been rendered a virtual ghost town, following last Wednesday’s violent attack on the local police station.

Most of the male residents have fled the area, leaving behind mainly women and children. The few men still seen in the community are those who claim they did not take part in the attack on the police.

It would be recalled that on Wednesday, October 29, 2025 some irate youth besieged the Nsuaem Police Station, vandalised property and set several motorbikes ablaze, after officers refused to release a suspected kidnapper who had been brought in by the community.

The suspect, identified as Sulley Moses, aged 25, was arrested by residents on suspicion of attempting to kidnap two schoolchildren. The police, after taking custody of the suspect, detained him for further investigation.

However, later that day, a mob of about 500 people armed with offensive weapons stormed the station, demanding the suspect’s immediate release.

They reportedly blocked sections of the Takoradi–Tarkwa Highway, set tyres ablaze and pelted the police with stones, damaging two police vehicles in the process.

Following the attack, the police temporarily shut down the station as investigations commenced. Fear has since gripped the town, with most of the men going into hiding to avoid arrest.

As of Monday, when The Chronicle visited the community, Nsuaem was eerily quiet, with only a few women and children seen going about their normal activities.
