The Chief Executive Officer of National Sports Authority (NSA), Prof. Peter Twumasi, has cut the sod for the construction of an artificial football field (Astroturf) at Kotei in the Oforikom Constituency of the Ashanti Region.
The project, dubbed the “Oforikrom project”, when completed, would have a fence, flood light, a pitch and resting place.
Best Construction Company Limited has been awarded the contract to construct the project, and is expected to be the largest in the region to create space for important matches and sporting activities.
It is expected that it would help reduce youth indulgence in crime, because it would serve as a recreational centre for the youth.
The National Sports Authority (NSA) said, since 2017, there had been about 100 Astroturfs built in the country with the Ashanti Region alone boasting of 15.
The initiator of the project, Claudia Abena Kwarteng Lumor, who is the UN Ambassador (NFPA) Ghana and Founder of Glitz Africa, commended the chiefs for releasing the parcel of land for the project, which was being funded by the Ghana Gas Company Limited which obliged to help upon a request.
Dr. Ben Asante of Ghana Gas Company said the funding for the project was ready, and, therefore, advised the contractor to ensure its early completion.
He said though his outfit was the financier of the Astroturf project, the government had the oversight responsibility to ensure its completion.
The Managing Director of Best Limited Construction Company, Nana Antwi, gave the assurance to provide quality work.
