The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is holding its much-anticipated National Delegates Conference today, Saturday, July 19, at the University of Ghana Stadium, in a critical gathering aimed at redefining the party’s direction following its defeat in the 2024 general elections.

Over 5,500 delegates from across the country are attending the event, which is being held under the theme: “Rebuilding Together with Our Values.” The theme reflects the party’s push for unity, renewal, and a return to its core principles.

A central focus of the conference is the consideration of 59 proposed amendments to the NPP constitution—marking what could become the party’s most significant internal reform in years. The proposed changes aim to restructure party operations, enhance grassroots mobilisation, and strengthen internal democracy in preparation for a stronger showing in the 2028 elections.

The event is taking place despite a legal challenge filed by two party members, Shamsudeen Iddrisu and Boateng Kwadwo, at the High Court on July 17.

The plaintiffs are seeking an interlocutory injunction to stop the conference, arguing that the party violated its own constitution by failing to hold required constituency and regional delegates conferences before convening the national event.

They contend that the National Council overstepped its powers in waiving these prerequisites, insisting that only the National Annual Delegates Conference, as the party’s supreme governing body, holds such authority. Despite submitting a petition to the National Executive Council, the plaintiffs say their concerns were ignored.

Although the court is expected to hear the matter on Thursday, July 24, no injunction has been granted as of today, and the conference is proceeding as scheduled.

The party has not publicly commented on the pending case, and no official communication has been made regarding the legal challenge during the event.

As the conference unfolds, attention remains focused on the outcome of the proposed reforms and the party’s efforts to rally support and rebuild momentum for the next electoral cycle.
