The Circuit Court at Dansoman, a suburb of Accra, presided over by Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Bassit, has remanded a 33-year-old Nigerian national, Victoria Ojbonna, into police custody for attempted human trafficking.
Ojbonna, a trader and resident of Bogoso in the Western Region, pleaded not guilty to the charge when she appeared before the court on Tuesday.
She was remanded upon the request of the prosecutor, Chief Inspector Emeila Mensah, who informed the court that investigations were still ongoing.
The case has been adjourned to October 30, 2025.
According to the facts presented by the prosecution, on October 6, 2025 at about 12:00 p.m., Ojbonna was spotted at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra with the victim, identified as Chiamaka Ojbonna, also a Nigerian national.
Information gathered by the police suggested that the accused had transported the victim from Nigeria to Ghana with the intent of using her for prostitution.
Upon arrival in Ghana, Ojbonna allegedly took the victim to Driver’s Lodge Hotel at Circle, where she reportedly locked her in a room without any justifiable reason.
An informant, who is also a witness in the case, later received information about the incident and proceeded to the hotel, where he found the victim locked up.
With the help of others, the informant rescued the victim and reported the matter to the police.
The accused was subsequently arrested and, in her cautioned statement, admitted bringing the victim to Ghana, but denied any involvement in human trafficking.
She has since been charged with attempt to commit a crime, to wit human trafficking, contrary to Section 18(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), as read with Section 2(1) and (2) of the Human Trafficking Act, 2005 (Act 694), as amended by Act 784 of 2009.Ojbonna remains in custody pending further investigations.
