The Neoplan Drivers Union and VIP, all of which belong to the Trade Union Congress (TUC), have presented a nine-unit classroom block to the Save Our Lives Educational Centre (SOLEC) at Anwiankwanta-Behenase, in the Bekwai municipality of the Ashanti region.
Made up of three classrooms, adjoining teachers restroom, a computer room and store facility, the donation aims to enhance academic activities in the area.
Complementing the gesture was presentation of assorted drinks and food items among others to the educational facility.
Additionally, drivers of the two transport unions made individual donations to SOLEC.
Addressing the media after handing over the project to SOLEC, the General Manager of VIP, Mr Adakabre Frimpong Manso, disclosed that leadership of the Neoplan Drivers’ Union, who are 25% shareholders of VIP Transport Company, and also have a seat on the board of VIP directors, initiated the project to benefit the community.
Through the instrumentality of Chairman Ato Mensah and Elder Asamoah, the transport unions got to know about the SOLEC orphanage facility in the Amansie enclave, which was in dire need of a Junior High School (JHS).
Frimpong Manso further explained that having found the place, the duo informed the mother association, which also accepted to help.
According to him, originally, they were to build a three unit classroom, however, the first trustee of VIP, Chairman Ato Mensah, having reassessed the project called for the inclusion of teachers’ restroom, computer laboratory and a library facility, making the project nine-unit, so as to enhance education in the Amansie area.
Asked about the future relationship between Neoplan drivers and SOLEC, Frimpong Manso responded that Neoplan drivers were expecting to have a cordial relationship with SOLEC. Adakabre Frimpong Manso added that, a Director of VIP, Nana Ama Serwaa Owusu, had also presented logistics.
On her part, Miss Paulina Priscilla Opei, the founder of SOLEC, expressed her appreciation to the transport entities for coming to their aid and asked other organisations to emulate what the transport unions had done.
