Former Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on members of the party to cease internal wrangling and instead focus on defending Ghana’s democracy and constitutional order.

Speaking at the ongoing NPP National Delegates Conference in Accra, Dr. Bawumia accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of attempting to erode the rule of law and undermine key democratic institutions.

“Let’s stop the internal attacks now,” he urged. “Let us rather focus on the attempts by the NDC to undermine our democracy and the rule of law, especially in their bid to remove the Chief Justice. We must also stand firmly against their clear intentions to go after the Electoral Commissioner next.”

Turning his attention to the recent Ablekuma North re-run election, Dr. Bawumia condemned what he described as “an environment of thuggery” by NDC-aligned groups, carried out in full view of law enforcement and cameras.

He called on former President John Mahama to rein in perpetrators of political violence, warning that the NPP will not forget these incidents.

“I again call on the president and his cabinet to bring the perpetrators to justice. Let me remind them that the elephant never forgets. No matter how long it takes, we will prosecute the offenders when we assume office in 2029, Insha Allah,” Dr. Bawumia declared.

He urged the NPP’s leadership to maintain strict party discipline, emphasizing that unity and order are crucial for the party’s future.

“It is discipline, humility, and the lessons we’ve learned that will make us more appealing to Ghanaians in 2028. Let us pursue a common goal with Ghana’s best interest at heart,” he said.

Dr. Bawumia also cautioned against the dangers of identity politics, calling for an end to tribal and religious divisions.

“Tribalism and religious bigotry—no matter where they come from—pose an existential threat. They should have no place in the New Patriotic Party,” he added.
