NDC appeals to international community to support flood victims

The largest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on the government, corporate organisations and the international community to as a matter of urgency, support the victims of the devastating spillage from the Akosombo Dam.

Residents of the North, South, and Central Tongu districts of the Volta Region are among several thousands of Ghanaians who are mainly victims of the devastating spillage from the Akosombo Dam.

As a precursor to the Moment of Truth press conference on Monday, the party’s National Communication Officer, Mr. Sammy Gyamfi, on behalf of the party, expressed its deepest sympathies to the victims.

“We wish to first express our heartfelt sympathies to our brothers and sisters of the North, South, and Central Tongu districts of the Volta Region who have been displaced by the devastating spillage from the Akosombo Dam,” he said.

He reiterated an important call that had been made by the party’s flag-bearer and leader, former President John Dramani Mahama, on the government to act swiftly to save the victims.

He said the government, acting through the Volta River Authority (VRA), the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other relevant agencies, must immediately provide the needed support for residents in the affected communities.

According to Lawyer Sammy Gyamfi, this must be done as a matter of urgency to ameliorate the plight of all suffering Ghanaians who had fallen victims to the devastating spillage.

The spillage of excess water from the Akosombo and Kpong hydro-electric dams, which began about a month ago, and was still ongoing, has created humanitarian crises downstream of the lower Volta.

The concomitant effect of the devastating spillage had resulted in the massive displacement of inhabitants of several communities in parts of the Volta, Eastern and Greater Accra regions.

Operation All-Hands-On-Deck has been launched by the VRA and other relevant state agencies to work around the clock to protect lives in the affected communities through the evacuation of victims.

The Volta River Authority has, therefore, intensified its humanitarian efforts to help alleviate the plight of victims of the flooding resulting from the spillage.

The Ghana Navy is said to have evacuated about eight thousand victims since the devastation began and was still on standby to assist the affected residents.
