The Ashanti Regional Early Warning and Response Group (RERG) under the patronage of the National Peace Council has frowned on the “violent acts” transpiring in some “constituencies” in the Ashanti Region.
Asawase, Obuasi East, Ahafo Ano South-East and Ahafo Ano North constituencies are reportedly witnessing “acts of violence” due to perceived challenges at their Collation Centres, as a result of “issues of allegations and mistrust” during the collation of results from the constituencies, after last Saturday’s elections.
Dr. Harriet Takyi, Ashanti Regional Chair, RERG, disclosed that “reports have indicated three souls have perished” due to gunshots at collation centres and open clashes at Mankranso and Akomadan respectively, as party thugs have reportedly disrupted process at Tepa’s Collation Centre.
The Chairperson urged Security Agencies to ensure persons who are found culpable are made to face the “full rigours of the law”, expressing condolence to the bereaved families, who have lost loved ones and also wished those who sustained injuries in the process a speedy recovery.
Dr. Harriet Takyi congratulated the winning and losing parties and the Electoral Management bodies for the peaceful manner they conducted themselves during the process.
He appealed to the “winning party”, especially at the grassroots level to moderate their celebrations and emphasised the need for all Ghanaians to respect the tenets of the constitution during the “transition period and beyond”, and encouraged the citizenry to be tolerant and respect the institutional structures and the laid down procedures of the governance system.
“Let us all continue to play our respective roles in upholding the peace and tranquillity we enjoy as a Nation”, Dr. Takyi stressed.
