MTN Ghana affirms commitment to invest $1billion in network expansion

Leading Telecommunication giant, MTN, has affirmed its commitment to attain the proposed $1 billion investment mark in network expansion by end of 2025.

Population coverage of the MTN network for 4G is currently 99.3% and 99.51% for 2G/3G, with an increase to 374 in rural telephony sites to rural areas.

The MTN is also spending $210 million this year to cover 260 districts with 4G, besides rolling out 350 new sites with 2G/3G/4G, as well as upgrading 400 sites with 4G.

The bid affirms its “Ambition 2025″ policy to provide digital operations without influencing the eco-system with the intent of leading digital solutions for Africa’s progress as a priority, which includes building the largest and most valuable platform, driving the industry to lead connectivity operations, creating share value and accelerating portfolio transformation.

MTN’s ambition is rooted in four big shifts in transforming customer service experience by leveraging Technology, processing centric to customer centric, physical to digital and Multi channel to Omni channel to reach maturity, aside supporting Ghana’s Digital agenda with US$25 million ICT Hub investment to empower the youth.

Mr. Daniel Asare, the Acting Chief Enterprise Business Officer of the Company announced these in a presentation at the 2023 Media and Stakeholders Forum in Kumasi.

The theme was: “Leveraging on Technology to serve customers with excellence”.

Mr. Asare said the company invested GH¢93.2 million in 159 social impact projects to touch the lives of over 4.5 million Ghanaians.

These include 88 projects on education, 54 on Health care, four on economic empowerment projects, as well as community support initiatives.

He said with a 289 million customer base, currently across 19 countries in Africa, including Ghana, MTN Ghana contributed over GH¢4 billion in government revenue (direct and indirect taxes) in 2022.

These included Corporate taxes (GH¢749.8 million), VAT, Levies and Duties (GH¢1.3 billion), Withholding Taxes (GH¢539 million), Communication Service Tax (GH¢400 million), Payments to other government agencies (GH¢301.7 million), National Fiscal Stability Levy (GH¢176 million), Pay as you earn (GH¢69 million) and E-levy (GH¢413.9 million).

According to Acting Chief Enterprise Business Officer, Momo now has 280,000 agents and 140,000 active merchants across the country.

Mr. Asare further revealed that in line with Merchant interoperability agenda, MTN has partnered with Vodafone to promote industry viability.

The Acting Chief Enterprise officer further revealed that Ayoba currently has 2.5 million customers and 50 micro apps to offer new opportunities for local developers.

Mr. Asare, however, mentioned fibre cuts, Momo fraud, network challenges as some of the major challenges facing the company.

He appealed to all stakeholders to get involved in the education of Ghanaians to stop or reduce fibre cuts.
