The Circuit Court in Accra has sentenced a 29-year-old Mobile Banker, Aziz Sulemana, to five years in prison for stealing GH¢70,840 from Abii National Savings and Loans, where he was employed. The sentence was handed down by His Honour Jojo Amoah Hagan on Tuesday.
In addition to the custodial sentence, the court ordered Aziz Sulemana to pay the remaining balance of GH¢55,840 to the financial institution.
During court proceedings, it was revealed that the accused had made a part payment of GH¢1,000 prior to sentencing.
Aziz Sulemana was charged with stealing, contrary to Section 124(1) of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
The charge followed investigations launched after a discrepancy in cash deposits was detected by the branch manager of Abii National, Jennifer Benning.
According to the facts presented in court, the theft occurred on May 9, 2025, at the institution’s Mataheko branch in Kaneshie, Accra.
An initial internal review found GH¢45,000 missing, prompting a report to the Kaneshie Police. Sulemana was arrested and, during police questioning, admitted to the offence.
A subsequent audit, conducted in his presence, revealed that the total amount stolen was GH¢70,840—much higher than initially reported.
Sulemana voluntarily signed the audit findings, confirming the full amount stolen. Before the case proceeded to trial, he refunded GH¢12,000 to the police, reducing the outstanding amount to GH¢58,840.
The prosecution, led by officer Patience Avorgah, laid out the evidence before the court, which culminated in a conviction.
The judge took into account the partial repayments made by the accused but emphasized the need to deter similar crimes in the financial sector.
Aziz Sulemana is currently serving his sentence while arrangements are being made to recover the remaining balance.
