The state security agencies, on Constitutional Day, averted a possible onslaught on targets when they apprehended six suspected members of the Western Togoland Group, who were in the process of taking charge of weapons at Aflao in the Volta Region.
The six, whose names and hometowns are being withheld by The Chronicle for security reasons, are currently being held by the Defense Intelligence Unit of the Ghana Armed Forces.
The suspects had reportedly planned to attack the Bank of Ghana (BoG) building at Hohoe to steal cash to enable them carry out their plans.
A highly placed military source, who confirmed the arrest to The Chronicle, named the Adomi Bridge at Atimpoku in the Eastern Region, and the Southern Volta Bridge at Sogakope, as their potential targets.
The capture of the two major bridges would have enabled the group to repel any military assistance from other units in the country.
According to the senior military source, the said members of the Western Togoland Group, in a bid to advance their cause, contacted a number of persons for the supply of arms and ammunition.
Interestingly, last Friday January 7, 2022, was the appointed day for the collection of the said arms at Aflao from a military intelligence officer, who had posed as a Tobui (Chief) from Togo. They were immediately arrested when they showed up at the agreed venue.
The military source further told The Chronicle that when the gang members were interrogated, they allegedly mentioned targets or installations they had wanted to attack.
It was also revealed that police and immigration personnel bearing arms in the Volta Region were also going to be attacked and the weapons taken from them.
The Western Togoland Group, which was founded by the late Papavi, has been agitating for the separation of the Volta, Oti, parts of the Northern, North East, and Upper East regions from the Republic of Ghana.
