In a bold move to sharpen its brand visibility and communication strategy, Melcom Group of Companies has appointed former Minister for Business Development and Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dr. Ibrahim Mohammed Awal, as its new Communications and Strategy Consultant.

Dr. Ibrahim Awal, a veteran media executive and entrepreneur, brings extensive experience from both the public and private sectors, having previously led the Graphic Communications Group Limited and served as CEO of Chase Petroleum.

The announcement was made at a press soiree, marking Melcom’s 36th anniversary of retail operations in Ghana.

According to the company’s leadership, Dr. Ibrahim Awal’s appointment will play a key role in enhancing stakeholder engagement, strengthening media relations, and positioning the brand for continued growth in a competitive retail environment.

Dr. Ibrahim Awal, in a short acceptance speech, emphasised the importance of staying agile and responsive in today’s market.

“Melcom has survived for over 35 years because of a winning strategy, one rooted in understanding the market and customer expectations. If you understand what customers want, you can deliver better than your competitors,” he said.

He further praised the company’s longstanding commitment to CSR and its efforts to support the media landscape.

“Melcom wants to be known for positive stories—on radio, TV, and in print. Over the last 10 years, the company has invested over GH¢20 million in health, medical supplies and environmental initiatives,” Dr Awal said.

Melcom’s Joint Group Managing Director, Mr. Ramesh Sadhwani, stated the company’s ongoing contributions to health, education, environmental sustainability, and community development.

In education, Melcom has introduced journalism scholarships at the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UNIMAC) in memory of its founder, while also providing educational support for the children of its employees.

“Empowering future journalists is vital to strengthening our democracy,” Mr. Sadhwani noted. He added that “this initiative honours our founder’s legacy and champions media excellence.”

On the community front, Melcom has played an active role—constructing health and office facilities in Dawhenya, being the first to respond with aid after the Appiatse explosion, building school washrooms, and assisting disaster victims.

The company’s efforts in workplace safety and environmental responsibility have earned commendations from the Ghana National Fire Service and the World Bank.

A video presentation during the event showcased these achievements with visuals of the company’s donations, projects and recognitions.

The evening concluded with a surprise birthday celebration for Dr. Awal, marked by shared laughter, cake and heartfelt wishes as he embarks on his new journey with Melcom.
