The Melcom Group of Companies has announced with deep sorrow the passing of its esteemed Communications Director, Godwin Avenorgbo, affectionately known as the “Grandmaster.”
In a statement signed by the management of Melcom, they disclosed that Mr. Avenorgbo died on Monday, August 19, 2024.
The Late Godwin Avenorgbo joined Melcom in 2013 and quickly rose to prominence within the organisation. His visionary approach to communication left an indelible mark on the company, setting a high standard for both internal and external affairs.
Melcom’s statement highlighted his exceptional leadership qualities, noting that his “industrious nature and non-negotiable leadership style earned him admiration and respect from all levels of the organisation.”
One of Avenorgbo’s most notable contributions to Melcom was his role as Chairman of the Melcom Education Scholarship. Under his leadership, the scholarship scheme was transformed, earning widespread recognition and greatly benefiting its recipients.
In addition to his role at Melcom, Godwin Avenorgbo was a respected journalist and broadcaster with a distinguished career before joining the company. He was a pivotal member of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) and had recently been appointed Chairman of the Planning Committee for the GJA’s 75th Anniversary celebrations.
His influence in the media landscape was profound, as he pioneered the concept of morning shows on GBC’s platforms, a format that has since become a staple in Ghanaian media.
Melcom’s statement further emphasised that Avenorgbo’s contributions extended beyond his professional achievements.
“Godwin Avenorgbo was more than just a leader; he was a mentor, a visionary and a staunch believer in the power of ethical communication,” the statement read.
His legacy, both within Melcom and in the broader community, will be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
As the company mourns this great loss, the Melcom Group of Companies extended its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Godwin Avenorgbo.
