A 24-year-old mechanic, Alex Sarfo, has been remanded into police custody by the Dansoman Circuit Court for allegedly stealing a client’s vehicle and causing damage to vital components of the car.
Alex Sarfo appeared before Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit on July 30, 2025 facing two criminal charges: stealing, contrary to Section 124(1) of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) and causing unlawful damage, contrary to Section 172 of the same Act.
According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Emeila Mensah, Alex Sarfo, who worked at a mechanic shop at Banana Inn, Dansoman, was entrusted with the repair of a Hyundai Elantra saloon car (registration GC 9905-22) by his employer, Emmanuel Tagoe.
The vehicle, owned by one Emmanuel Amaglo, had been brought in for gear box repairs in April 2025.
In May 2025, Tagoe assigned Sarfo to supervise the repairs. However, after test-driving the vehicle, Sarfo allegedly drove it without permission from Dansoman to Kwahu Asaaka in the Eastern Region.
He later contacted Tagoe, falsely claiming the car had broken down at Kasoa and requested funds for repairs. He subsequently abandoned the car at Kwahu Beposo and went into hiding.
Tagoe filed an official complaint on July 8, 2025 after failing to trace Sarfo or the vehicle. Investigators later found the abandoned Hyundai Elantra near the Beposo lorry station.
Upon recovery, the car was found with damages estimated at GH¢11,300 – including a destroyed gear box and ignition key components.
Sarfo was arrested on July 25, 2025 at an MTN office in Dansoman. In his caution statement, he admitted to taking the vehicle to Kwahu Asaaka and abandoning it.
In court, the presiding judge refused bail, citing Section 96(5)(a) of Act 30, and ordered Sarfo to be remanded into police custody pending further investigations, which she directed must be expedited.
The case was adjourned to August 11, 2025.
