President John Dramani Mahama has assured residents of Bawku that his government is prioritising efforts to restore lasting peace to the area, which has experienced recurrent unrest.
Speaking during a visit to the town yesterday, President Mahama expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him and reiterated his commitment to fulfilling his campaign promise of making peace in Bawku a top priority.
“I thank God for granting our heart’s desire and my first mission was to come and say ‘Thank You’. During the campaign, I stated that if God granted me the opportunity to lead again, bringing peace to Bawku would be my number one priority,” he said.
The President’s visit, exactly one week after his inauguration at the Black Star Square, marked his first official assignment outside Accra.
He emphasised the urgency of addressing the security situation in Bawku, where tensions have disrupted daily life.
“I remember when I was president previously, Bawku and its surroundings were peaceful and people went about their duties without fear. It is sad that the situation has deteriorated over the past three years.
“I understand the stress and sleepless nights you have endured. Our government’s priority is to restore peace so that everyone can go about their daily activities without fear,” he added.
President Mahama revealed plans to expedite the appointment of key officials responsible for national security, including the Ministers for Defence and Interior, the Bureau of National Investigation (BNI) and the National Security Coordinator.
“Within this week, we will finalise the appointments of the ministers and officials who will take charge of security matters.
“I appeal to you to exercise patience. I am fully apprised of the issues and will address them. By the grace of God, permanent peace will return to Bawku,” he assured.
The President also announced plans to visit Nayiri, the paramount chief of the Mamprugu Traditional Area, as part of ongoing efforts to engage stakeholders and find a sustainable solution to the region’s challenges.
Bawku, a historic commercial hub, has been plagued by sporadic violence, often linked to chieftaincy disputes.
Residents look forward to President Mahama’s renewed focus on peace, which will mark a turning point for the area.
