President John Dramani Mahama has announced a major infrastructure plan to construct a modern bridge over the Afram River; a project aimed at enhancing connectivity and economic activity in the Eastern Region.

Speaking to an enthusiastic crowd at the Jackson Park in Koforidua on Sunday, as part of his ongoing “Thank You” tour, President Mahama said the proposed bridge will not only ease transportation challenges, but also spur development across farming and trading communities that rely heavily on the river crossing.

According to the President, “the Eastern Region plays a crucial role in Ghana’s economy, especially in agriculture and mining, hence the new bridge, when constructed, will help unlock its full potential”.

In addition to the bridge project, President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to completing the Eastern Regional Hospital, a flagship healthcare project started under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, noting that quality healthcare is a top priority for the NDC.

The first gentleman of the land mentioned that Funds have been disbursed to first-year students in public tertiary institutions as part of the No Fees Stress Policy, clearance of six months’ arrears for both teachers and nursing trainees and the reinstatement of monthly stipends which provide financial stability for these trainees.

President John Mahama continued that the aforementioned interventions demonstrate his government’s progress in education and public service.
He further assured the people that the Eastern Region will receive a fair share of the NDC’s “Big Push Agenda”, a policy initiative focused on large-scale infrastructure development nationwide.
Touching on governance and accountability, the president disclosed that road contractors working on projects awarded under the previous administration have been instructed to pause work for a special audit. This, he explained, is to ensure transparency and proper use of public funds.
On her part, the Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey praised President John Mahama for what she described as the “tangible and transformative impact” of his leadership across Ghana.
The Minister noted that many Ghanaians who once doubted the President’s vision are now witnessing the results of his commitments.
“Before the elections, critics mocked his promises, calling them unrealistic and labelling him as someone who was over-promising. Today, those same promises are being fulfilled,” she said.
The Eastern Regional Minister highlighted several key achievements under the current NDC leadership, including expansion of the School Feeding Programme to include private schools and fulfilment of the free sanitary pad policy for schoolgirls
Others are the cancellation of the teacher licensure examinatio, as promised and payment of nursing trainee allowances, adding that these actions reflect a government that listens, cares and delivers.
“President Mahama’s leadership continues to inspire hope across the country. His ability to follow through on promises is restoring trust in governance,” she added.
This, the Eastern Regional Minister encouraged Ghanaians to continue supporting the government as it works to improve on lives and build a more inclusive and equitable future.
