Dansoman Circuit Court, presided over by Her Honour Halimah El-Alawa Abdul-Baasit, is set to sentence 37-year-old Lotto writer, Emmanuel Allotey, on April 17, 2025 following his admission of guilt to 58 counts of altering National Lotto coupons and using them to fraudulently obtain GH₵34,680.00.
The GH₵34,680.00 is the total sum of fabricated winning tickets, each ranging from GH₵480 to GH₵2,400.
On the last adjourned date, Allotey’s family refunded GH₵6,000 from the total amount, which the judge ordered to be handed over to the complainant.
Case Background
Chief Inspector Christopher Wonder presented the facts of the case in court. The complainant, Samuel Otu Lartey, is the manager of Lotto and Lotteries Company Limited, Accra Branch and resides in Dansoman.
The accused, Emmanuel Allotey, was employed as a lotto writer for the company and operated under the writer’s code G.I.M.
He lives at Shaibu – Dansoman and had been working on a commission basis for approximately five months before the fraudulent activities were uncovered.
On February 22, 2025, the complainant noticed irregularities in Allotey’s winning records at one of the company’s branches. Upon further investigation, Lartey retrieved past winning coupons attributed to the accused.
A closer inspection revealed that Allotey had altered multiple Lotto coupons to match the official National Lottery winning numbers between November 2024 and February 2025.
As a result of his fraudulent activities, he had dishonestly appropriated GH₵34,680.00 from the company.
When confronted by his employer, Allotey admitted to manipulating the Lotto coupons and requested time to refund the stolen amount.
However, a formal complaint was subsequently lodged with the police, leading to his arrest. In his caution statement, Allotey confessed to the crime, explaining that he used the proceeds to pay for his father’s medical bills, his rent, and to acquire a passport.
During the course of investigations, the accused managed to refund GH₵1,000.00, which was handed over to the complainant. He was later charged with multiple offenses and arraigned before the Dansoman Circuit Court.
Allotey now awaits his sentencing, which will be delivered on April 17, 2025.
