Ing. George Asiedu, Coordinator of World Bank funded Greater Accra Metropolitan Area (GAMA) and Greater Kumasi Metropolitan Area (GKMA) Water and Sanitation Project (WSP) has urged Ghanaians, especially landlords, to prioritise the provision of household toilet facilities in their homes to help stop open defecation.
According to him, open defecation is a threat to productivity and has negative impact on the economy, hence the need to vigorously fight open defecation with all the efforts we can as a nation, with the assistance of the collaboration between the GAMA and GKMA Water and Sanitation Project, under the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources.
Ing. Asiedu disclosed that the GAMA and GKMA Water and Sanitation Project is a four year programme launched in November 2021, working with the government to assist those without toilet facilities in their homes to get one through a subsidy to help stop defecation that attract diseases in the communities.
Ing. Asiedu said the project would build 30,000 toilet facilities and has so far built 14,000 with 16,000 more to be built, and urged those without household toilets to get registered. He disclosed that instead of taking the full cost of GH¢7000.00 for the toilet, the government would subsidise the cost for the beneficiary to pay GH¢1,200.00.
He revealed that those with privy rooms would have to pay only GH¢500.00 as government subsidy for the low income communities to provide water, whilst the schools without toilet facilities would also benefit from the institutional toilet facilities project.
