The Federal Ministry of Works on Monday removed barriers on the section one of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway construction project.
The News Agency of Nigeria reported that workmen used heavy duty equipment to remove crash barriers and other diversion points for free flow of traffic at the OPIC U-turn end of the highway.
The removal will be a relief for motorists who spend long hours in the gridlock.
Supervising the re-opening around OPIC, the Director, Federal Highways, South-West, Mr Adedamola Kuti, said the government earlier promised to re-open the highway to traffic on Thursday but brought the date forward to ease the gridlock.
Kuti said because of the festive season, all obstructions on section one, which spanned Ojota, Lagos, to Sagamu Interchange, Ogun State, were being removed on Monday.
He added that all construction would also be halted on section two of the project, which spanned the Sagamu Interchange to Ojoo, Ibadan, Oyo State, on Thursday, to further boost movement ahead of the Yuletide.
The official said the contractors would return to site in January to complete the project, adding that the Federal Ministry of Works was targeting delivery by the first quarter of 2023.
Kuti explained that some unforeseen circumstances, including heavy rainfall, slowed down construction, hence the new targeted delivery date.
The Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Mr Lanre Bankole, assured of adequate security on the highway.
