The Metropolitan Chief Executive for Kumasi, Mr Richard Ofori Agyemang-Boadi, aka King Zubah, has expressed his determination to reposition Kumasi for economic vitality.

Addressing the first session of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly Meeting, King Zubah pleaded with the House to enact a bye-law requiring all shop owners within the Central Business District (CBD) to acquire and install smoke detectors as a vital measure to enhance fire safety. This requirement would serve as a precondition for trading.

The Mayor commended the efforts of the Police Patrol and other security personnel for maintaining peace and stability in the Metropolis.

“Their consistent presence and proactive interventions have fostered a safe environment, allowing residents, traders and visitors to carry out their daily activities without fear or disruption”, he noted.

King Zubah highlighted the need to address the persistent disregard for traffic rules and regulations by traders and drivers in the CBD.

He stated that deliberate steps had been taken to ease congestion in the CBD, with a focus on ensuring the smooth flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

The Mayor revealed that a comprehensive strategy was implemented to engage traders operating in unauthorised areas, and obstructions such as metal structures and tables were removed following a public notice.

Regarding the recently approved 15% reduction in transport fares, the Mayor disclosed that a joint taskforce was formed to ensure enforcement and compliance and that a total of 114 ‘Trotros’ have since been impounded and fined for non-compliance.

The Mayor expressed his profound appreciation to His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, for his gracious acceptance and blessing prior to his nomination.

He also thanked the Ashanti Regional Minister, the Regional Chairman and Executives of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), chiefs and all others who contributed to the success of his confirmation.

King Zubah stressed his readiness to lead in a collaborative, consultative and accountable manner.

He recognised the invaluable contributions of his predecessors and expressed his commitment to building on their legacy with renewed energy, bold vision and a shared commitment to progress.
