Kumasi Technical University (KsTU) has launched Fashion Express 2024 with a call on students not to wait for jobs to come to them, but to try and find jobs, since they have the capacity to establish their own businesses.
This year’s Fashion Show, a special edition carefully planned to showcase the talents and creativity of final-year students of Btech and HND programmes in Fashion Design and Textiles Studies, coincides with the 70th Anniversary Celebration of the University themed: “Celebrating Seven Decades of Fashion Excellence.”
Professor Thomas Obeng Asare, Dean of the Faculty of Creative Arts and Technology, who made the call, expressed optimism that the programme will open job opportunities for the graduates as they leave school.
He said the school appreciates their hard work and commitment but should never rest on their oars waiting for someone to find them a job, adding that the training they have acquired should enable them to survive in the local and global competitive markets.
He noted that for Ghana to experience accelerated development, higher institutions of training must focus on employable skills.
This, he said, is because University programmes that place excessive emphasis on theoretical courses are no longer beneficial to the country; hence graduates from such institutions struggle to find work.
He explained that the fashion design Programmes at the university focus on teaching students to acquire employable skills and attitudes with entrepreneurial linkages, all of which are essential components of Ghana’s socio-economic empowerment.
The Dean of the Faculty of Creative Arts and Technology disclosed that the students are encouraged to self-explore and build a strong mental focus society, highlighting their potential contribution to poverty mitigation in Ghana and around the world.
Professor Abena Agyeiwaah Obiri Yeboah, Pro Vice Chancellor of KsTU, indicated that the university strives to provide all the necessary resources for the faculty to strive.She commended the industry partners for the support to the students.
The Pro Vice Chancellor urged the students to use the knowledge and talents acquired to serve the country and urged them to build a good and solid brand.
Mr. Eric Owusu, Chief Executive Officer of Royal Efforts Ghana, as a guest fashion designer, described the faculty of fashion, creative arts and technology as the future of Ghana.
He tasked the graduates to be strong in the industry and urged them to collaborate when the need arose.
