The College of Health Sciences of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has donated a total sum of GH¢125,000 to the management of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) towards the “Heal KomfoAnokye Project’.
The ‘Heal Komfo Anokye Project’ was launched by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, in November last year, as part of his legacy projects to mark his 25th Anniversary celebration of his enstoolment.
The Project is meant to address the urgent need for infrastructural improvement at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), Ghana’s second-largest teaching hospital, which receives referrals from 12 out of the 16 regions of Ghana.
Prof. Christian Agyare, who led the KNUST delegation to make the donation on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Mrs. Rita Akosua Dickson, said the donation comes in three forms.
He explained that GHC100,000 is donated by KNUST, GHC15,000 from the College Board (which comprises Heads of Department) and GHC10,000 by Prof. Agyare as his personal donation.
Prof. Agyare noted that the project is very relevant and further explained that next year marks 50 years of collaboration between the College and KATH in the training of students.He said 90 to 95 percent of their students do their clinical and housemanship at KATH, hence the need for them to donate towards the cause.
He further explained that KNUST has also been supporting in kind by providing experts like Civil Engineers and Quantity Surveyors, among others.
Prof. Agyare urged the public to come and support the project for the early implementation to help serve the Ashanti Region and beyond.
Receiving the donation, the Acting Chief Executive Officer of KATH, Dr. Kwando Sarbeng, who also doubles as the Medical Director of the facility thanked the delegation and expressed his heartfelt gratitude to them.
He said, the tools they (health workers) use in their working environment could demoralise them when it is in a dilapidated state, hence the donations would be used for its intended purpose, for the good of all and sundry.
Mr. Sammy Adu Boakye, Chairman of the ‘Heal Komfo Anokye Project’, also thanked the delegation for their donations. He disclosed that the project has received about US$4 million within the six months that it was launched and still looking out for identifying groups to come and support. The Chairman stated that the initial completion time which was 24 months has been extended to 36 months.
He emphasised that all contractors and materials used on the project are local ones, with the exception of the hospital tiles which were imported with a 10 year warranty.
Meanwhile, the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has published the names of 124 corporate institutions, organisations and individuals who have contributed towards the facelift.
The highest donors, according to the publication are;Justmoh Constructions Limited, Joshop Construction Limited, Fidelity Bank, Life Ally Ghana, Scancom Ghana PLC, Oak Plaza Hotels, Bost Company Limited, Church of Christ, Prophet Kofi Amponsah and Olam Food.
In total, GHC14,240,645.15 has been donated by these groups and individuals, the chairman of the Committeeof ‘Heal Komfo Anokye Project’, Mr. Sammy Adu Boakye said.
