The Kejetia Market in Kumasi, which was flooded after the rain a few weeks ago, has yesterday reportedly been gutted by fire. The inferno gutted parts of the Ashanti Regional facility yesterday.
Traders affected by the incident were seen wailing as they tried to salvage as many of their wares as they could. It is yet unclear what triggered the outbreak. Some of the victims who collapsed due to the smoke were carried to health facilities nearby.
It will be recalled that on March 8th this year, a heavy downpour, which lasted for two hours, left the Kejetia Market flooded. It destroyed goods worth thousands of Ghana Cedis.
Frank Antwi, head of the Concerned Kejetia Merchants Association, responded to the issue by advising the market vendors to keep their goods off the ground and up on high tables to protect them from flooding.
While pleading with the Mayor of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Mr. Antwi demanded that the market’s clogged drains be cleared off silt.
The Chairman also said that the group had filed a lawsuit against the market’s administration for the harm done to the properties of the members during earlier floods.
He did, however, add that they were awaiting the court’s ruling.
