KATH fires ‘whistle-blower’ for peddling false information

The management of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) has dismissed Mr. Awuni Akyireba, a revenue officer of the facility. His dismissal follows an earlier interdiction while the Disciplinary Committee probed his claims of alleged financial mismanagement against the hospital management.

Mr. Akyireba had dragged management of the hospital to the Commission of Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) over alleged mismanagement of Covid-19 funds, which claims the management had debunked as “lies; total lies, and pure lies through and through.”

The hospital’s Disciplinary Committee, chaired by Dr. Kofi Osei-Afoakwa, described the contents of Akyireba’s submissions as false, and that his explanation of same to the media as a breach of hospital protocols, which formed the basis for his dismissal.

According to the Disciplinary Committee, Mr. Awuni Akyireba had peddled falsehood and also breached the hospital’s disciplinary code when he alleged that the management of KATH had used Covid-19 donations to acquire luxury vehicles.

The Committee further stated that Mr. Akyireba’s decision to go to the media with the information he had gathered, instead of the hospital’s management, constituted misconduct and a breach of KATH’s disciplinary code, Section 13:02.

The dismissal letter, signed by the Board Chairman, Ambassador Nana Effah Apenteng, stated: “Besides, a content analysis of your response to the query given you, clearly indicates that you wilfully used abusive language on your superior, contrary to the Disciplinary Code, Section 13.01 I (poor performance) and ii (misconduct).”

The Board Chairman revealed that Mr. Akyireba failed to appear before the Disciplinary Committee to provide further evidence. “For avoiding physical service of invitation to appear before the Disciplinary Committee, and eventually failing/refusing to appear, despite glaring evidence that you saw the invitation, you commit a major offence under the Code.”

“The Hospital Board finds your conduct most reprehensible and unacceptable. Especially when you were previously given warning, final warning to desist from such behaviour,” hence the conclusion of the Committee that “you are guilty of all the offences charged and therefore renders you liable for summary dismissal in line with Section 13:02 of the disciplinary code.”

As a result, the Hospital Board has directed the Director of Finance to strike out Mr. Akyireba’s name from the hospital’s payroll, and ensure the payment of his benefits from the Provident Fund with immediate effect.

Meanwhile, Mr. AwuniAkyireba has debunked the claim that he had evaded the Disciplinary Committee.

According to him, he was then on approved leave.
