Goals from Dan Ndoye and Tommaso Pobega left Juventus trailing, but Teun Koopmeiners pulled one back and Samuel Mbangula scored in stoppage time as the home side extended their undefeated start in Serie A to 15 games.
Juventus boss Motta – dismissed in the second half for dissent – guided Bologna into the Champions League and his current side looked second best for much of Saturday’s game.
Bologna attacker Ndoye hit the outside of the post before team-mate Jens Odgaard was denied a penalty by the video assistant referee (VAR) despite Pierre Kalulu appearing to bring him down.
The visitors’ superiority was rewarded when Ndoye rifled past Mattia Perin from a tight angle after latching on to a disguised reverse pass.
Juventus responded though chances for Nicolo Fagioli and Francisco Conceicao, but the hosts struggled to carry momentum into the second period.
Motta was red-carded five minutes into the second half, before Pobega scored after running on to Castro’s audacious flick through the legs of Federico Gatti.
Koopmeiners pulled a goal back for the hosts following Danilo’s cut-back, sparking a marked improvement.
Juventus were moments away from losing to Bologna for the first time in 13 years, but substitute Mbangula rifled a terrific late strike into the top right corner from 20 yards to rescue a point.
