A former Attorney General under the Kufuor administration, Joe Ghartey, says his presidency would ensure a lean and efficient government. The former Minister of Railway Development, who is gunning for the flagbearership of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), said his government would have a maximum of 60 ministers, if he was mandated to lead the party, and subsequently form a government on the ticket of the NPP.
Sharing his vision, vis-a-vis his achievements as a party member, minister and law maker during a brief tour of the Ashanti Region on Monday, the Human Rights activist and investment corporate lawyer said respect for the rule of law was his priority.
Mr. Ghartey, a former Second Deputy Speaker of Parliament between 2013 and 2017, noted that as an experienced parliamentarian, his presidency would relate well with Parliament as a key stakeholder in the democratic dispensation, noting that the power of Parliament was enormous.
“I will work with Parliament and defend Parliamentarians,” he told a meeting of journalists in Kumasi on Monday.
The Essikado-Ketan lawmaker since 2004 said there was hope for Ghana in that his bid for the leadership of the party would ensure a change. The flagbearer hopeful said his vision was to implement institutional change across infrastructure, personnel, technology and attitude wise.
Touting his achievements, Mr. Ghartey claimed he would pull surprises at the flagbearer primary, and gave an assurance that he was ready to serve, because leadership was all about service.
He mentioned some of his legacies as the Human Rights for All, and the Justice for All projects he initiated in 2007, which culminated into the Remand Review Project, which reduced remand prisoners to 9% currently from 33% in 2007, which project was being replicated in other countries.
He also cited infrastructural development at the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT).
The former Railways Development Minister also mentioned that plans were far advanced to reactivate the Kaase-Adum-Ejisu rail line to improve on mobility and commerce from his initiative.
Mr. Ghartey also intends to use good policies to raise funds to make education the centre of excellence so that Ghana could become a Mecca of Education.
He called on delegates to give him the nod to enable him execute his agenda of change, which he implemented at the Attorney General’s Department and the Ministry of Railway Development.
